In our portal, it takes at most 30 seconds to take a selfie picture of your ID. At this point, guests can either choose to do a $500 pre-authorization hold (it's not a "deposit" - we never receive the money and it's never taken out of the account, just "allocated" in case we need to cover damages), or they can choose a $15/night damage waiver. It's an either / or choice, we have no preference one way or another. There is no delay at all. However, the option to choose a security hold isn't available until 7 days in advance, because we don't want or need to have a $500 hold on your account for 3 months, and the banks don't allow it. Our system would have to keep renewing the hold until after checkout, which would just be silly. Yes - we require an ID selfie to be uploaded into our secure portal. If your host DOESN'T require you to do this, you shouldn't stay with them, because it means they don't care of their property, or don't know what they're doing as hosts. VRBO, unlike that "other" site, pushes 100% of the liability onto hosts, and we're not letting unknown, unvetted people into our $500k homes. You can't even check into a Super 8 motel without showing an ID.
