## Emplacement
An unmissable destination, La Rochelle has no shortage of charms to enchant its visitors. A quintessential port city with four harbors, the Cité Blanche captivates all who gaze upon the sun-drenched white stone from which its buildings are constructed. The ever-present ocean is the symbol of the city, its spray filling visitors' nostrils. The old stones also have their say in this landscape bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, where low coasts, steep cliffs, and sandy shores alternate. International trade has fostered a unique architectural mix, subject to various influences from across the seas. Not far from the shore, the islands of Ré, Oléron, and Aix form a natural barrier preventing the ocean swell from disturbing the calm of the thousand-year-old city. Originally a fishing village founded in the 10th century, it took only two millennia for it to become an important port. Its dominance in maritime trade lasted until the 15th century.
