Our vacation rental called IdylWest is a “SHOTGUN MODERN HOUSE” built in 2006 as an IN-TOWN RETREAT BY FAMOUS BOOK AUTHOR, screen writer and outdoor enthusiast Thomas McGuane whose many works include the film Missouri Breaks starring Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando.
Designed as a hip and modern abode by award-winning architectural firm Thinktank AIA, it has many high-end features. Upon completion, the house was given a HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD for blending in so nicely with it’s downtown historic neighborhood and was FEATURED IN “AT HOME MAGAZINE” for its innovative design and outdoor space:
“The main floor features an open living and dining room with dark poured concrete floors which include radiant heat and and crisp white walls. A combination of metal, wood and earth-tones create a modern yet characteristically Montana feel. Tucked at the back of the house the kitchen continues the wood and metal theme found throughout the house. A loft-style floor plan allows for the maximum amount of light on the main floor as well as the master bedroom upstairs. Cork flooring on the second floor appeal to both the rustic and modern sensibility. A walk out upper deck that opens off the master bedroom is a sheltered place to take in the view of the Bridger Mountains. …The master bathroom has something for everybody with both a classic clawfoot tub and a modern, pale green tiled shower. Surprisingly, since from the outside it appears to be almost completely underground, the walk-out basement is almost as light as the upper floors, Outside, THE SMELL OF CEDER AND FLOWERS DRIFTS ON THE BREEZE. The garden is a combination of young trees and hearty native plants and flowers, Exchanging grass for small wood chips and stone walkways makes the yard a beautiful and accessible oasis.”

Bozeman Cottage is owned and operated by Paul House, a licensed property manager in the state of Montana, license # RRE-RPM-LIC-45468.
The Gallatin Valley has always been home to me and I started Bozeman Cottage in 1998 to help keep me here. Since then the business has grown mostly by accident and I started managing IdylWest Modern Guest House in 2013. Southwest Montana will capture you with its rugged, wild, landscape and majestic mountain views. You can truly experience why it's called Big Sky Country.
My company is small enough to make sure you are welcomed warmly, and I'm sure you'll relish this spacious, quiet space to unwind and enjoy the surrounding mountains and scenery, as well as the excitement of being right in the heart of Bozeman.
Catch prize blue ribbon trout at several public accesses along the Gallatin River just a few miles away, ski three downhill and two cross country ski resorts, hike in an area replete with well-groomed hiking trails, and bike the extensive trails in Bozeman itself.
It's a short 30 minutes to Bridger Bowl, 60 minutes to Big Sky ski resort, another 35 minutes to Yellowstone Park AND the relaxing, luxurious Bozeman Hot Springs and Spa is just 12 miles away!
New, bright, and hip, this house is a refreshing blend of modern design and casual comfort. Passive solar design fills the house with sunlight year round and the sun's heat in winter.
Our family enjoyed a marvelous nine day stay at Idylwest. This vacation home was meticulously maintained and ready for our family to enjoy. It is located just a few blocks from the active Bozeman Main Street and of course a short drive to the fabulous Southwest Montana vacation spots. Idylwest comes prepared with everything a family could possibly need, including kitchen supplies, and it felt like home within minutes of us moving in. It is easy to get spoiled living at Idylwest and our family will have a hard time ever enjoying an overnight stay in a typical hotel again when we travel. We are looking forward to our return to Idylwest next summer.
We stayed 3 weeks. The kitchen was very well equipped. The manager was very responsive to problems - we had some burned out light bulbs that were promptly replaced. Location was incredibly convenient.
Each summer we come to enjoy Bozeman and staying at this home made our trip even better. The walking commutes into town were very close to all recommended restaurants and local watering holes. The house itself was immaculate, beautiful, well furnished, and very spacious for the two of us. Paul was always available if needed and his knowledge of where to eat, drink and explore are on the point.
We stayed here for our daughter's graduation from MSU. The home was not only a great place for our family to hang out, but very accessible via walking to get downtown or up on Peet's Hill for our daily walk. Great to park the car and explore Bozeman on foot. The Idylwest home was well stocked with everything we needed for preparing meals including a nice outdoor space with a grill. Lovely home, great location and perfect for our stay in Bozeman.
House was amazing, beautifully appointed, and close to everything. We were able to walk to MSU and downtown. This will certainly be on our list when we return to Bozeman.
The house is beautiful, with comfortable beds and really thoughtful decor. In fact, it is obvious that lots of thought went into this home. Our children and grandchild live here in Bozeman, so it is fun to have family meals and card games together. It is conveniently located within walking distance to hiking trails. We will definitely return, if they will have us.
