Let the ocean lull you to sleep under a canopy of stars - The ideal get-away for the creative artist or writer – just steps away from Cooks Beach. A simply spectacular house designed by Ralph Matheson with a view from every room.
This two-bedroom, two-bath, home has floor-to-ceiling, glass cornered windows that bring white-water views of the ocean, Cook’s Beach and The Fishrocks into every room. An arched skylight the entire length of the structure fills the home with light and gives new meaning to sleeping under the stars (and the moon) at night.
The master suite offers a full bath and dressing room with walk-in closet and glass block shower. The kitchen features a large breakfast bar, gas-stove, all built-in appliances and imported German cabinets. It opens out to the dining and living rooms allowing for an ideal open entertainment area featuring custom Italian designed furniture. Radiant floor heating provides the ultimate in comfort. A wood-burning fireplace in the sunken living room and a wood-burning stove in the master bedroom provide ambiance and warmth for the cool nights on the coast. A full guest bedroom suite with full-bath on the second level provides personal privacy away from the main floor. The detached office/studio/game room allows space and privacy away from the living quarters while over-looking the ocean and open space. A 2-person hot-tub tucked in a cozy corner of the deck provides an ideal way to watch the moon rise and finish out a day of creative writing, sculpting or painting. A full double garage, enclosed decks and entry complete the package.
1.65 acres in the heart of the “banana belt” located midway between Gualala and Anchor Bay. Within 2 miles of 3 grocery stores, a gym, restaurants, shops and within 15 minutes from the Point Arena movie house. On an island of land between Coast Hwy 1 and Old State Hwy, it offers breathtaking views of Cook’s Beach, Bourn’s Landing and The Fishrocks.

About Fred & Susie
We fell in love with California's northern coastline and Shiosai the moment we saw it - it has been our dream house providing us a zen-like escape! We are busy Silicon Valley executives and this is how we rejuvenate ourselves when we are able to get away to Shiosai. We do love to share our special place and enjoy hearing back from our guests and what they take away from it - welcome!
Fred & Susie purchased this House in 2003
Why Fred & Susie chose Gualala
Gualala means 'where the river meets the ocean' = an American Indian name. An old logging town, and 2 miles from Sea Ranch, Gualala offers the wonders of nature (whale watching, deer, foxes, osprey, vulture buzzards, bobcats) together with other sporting fun (golf, river kayaking, surfing). It is an artist enclave with some very special restaurants (St. Orrs). The friendly and creative residents of Gualala complete the picture. There is nothing more one could ask for!
What makes this House unique
An unobstructed white-water view of the Pacific ocean and Cook's beach. Spectacular sunsets. Osprey flying over the house with their daily catch. Spouting whales in the distance. A deer with her babies. A mesmerizing full moon over the water. Millions of stars right over your bed lighting up the night through the barrel skylight which runs through the full length of the home. What one of our guests said 'what every couple in love should experience. . . .'

Absolutely Wonderful Stay
We had an absolute wonderful stay at "Shiosai" The home is stunning and the views from every room are fantastic. The house was immaculate and the kitchen had any cooking accessory that you would ever need. Communication with Fred was easy and awesome. He even emailed to warn us of the fires in Northern California a few days before our trip. The check in and out directions were simple and easy to follow as well as the instructions for the spa, fireplace, etc. We loved the house and the views were so spectacular that we didn't spend much time in the town of Gualala. The local grocery stores had everything we needed but we did not try any of the local restaurants. We were only there three nights as our main goal was to drive the Pacific Hwy. I highly recommend this place. Oh I almost forgot. The stars at night are awesome. We actually got to see the Persoids meteor shower early one morning.
A touch of Heaven!
The pictures of this property were beautiful but still did not do it justice. We were surprised by the serenity and seclusion. The landscaping provided total privacy and still allowed the wild deer to come to the window. The house was much larger than we expected and was impeccably clean. The rooms were very comfortable and the kitchen was very up to date. We were pleasantly surprised by a full moon shining through the sky-light at night.
We enjoyed the town of Gualala and enjoyed the variety of food available at the local grocery stores. The Physical Gym was well equipped and very clean. We enjoyed the drive through the redwood forests and wine regions. Next year we will definitely be back to visit this area.

Loved our stay at Shiosai! The views were outstanding - would definitely go back again!
Delightfully Relaxing Retreat
My husband and I had a wonderful and relaxing vacation at Shiosai. The house is beautiful and was very well-equipped with everything we needed. The kitchen is marvelous! We had daily visits from a doe and two fawns, a few foxes, and we were lucky enough to experience one day with calm seas and multiple whale sightings. The house is a 5 minute drive to town, so it was easy to run in for shopping and gym visits (the gym sells weekly memberships). We also enjoyed our evening ping-pong matches! Best of all was the easy access to Cooks Beach. We often had the beach to ourselves when we visited in the early morning, and we spent hours watching a pair of osprey hunt (and catch!) fish in the cove. We feel so fortunate to have discovered this house, and we really look forward to returning as soon as we can.
Our time at Shiosai was wonderful. The views, the wildlife, the close walk to a great little beach, all gave us the rest, nature, and luxury that we were looking for. Fred is easy and lovely to work with; we decided to see if we could stay extra days, and he made it work. I would choose this as a destination easily again. Gualala is a great little town to hang near, with all the supplies close at hand. The kitchen is ready for cooking and the living room with the fireplace was a favorite hangout. Thank you so much!
Beautiful Home with Amazing Views!
My husband and I recently enjoyed 5 nights at Shiosai. What a treat and such an amazing and beautiful property! It truly is a slice of heaven and the perfect place to get away and escape from the world.
The views are absolutely stunning from every room in the home. We had a couple foggy days and a couple sunny days on our stay. We enjoyed each day and were thrilled to have both ends of the spectrum. The floor-to-ceiling windows let you enjoy the incredible view without being cold on the foggy days. And the sitting out on the deck was perfect with the tables, lounge chairs, and a hot tub.
The kitchen is well-stocked so cooking meals at the home is easy and comfortable. Everything worked and the house was clean. We also love the contemporary décor!
The beach is just a short walk from the house and has an easy trail to get down to it. Gualala is a cute little town not 5 minutes from the house with all the necessary essentials available.
Shiosai is a gem of a find… we plan on returning again.
Thank you Fred & Susie!
Our home, while privately situated, is located conveniently between the little towns of Gualala and Anchor Bay. Both towns have grocery stores stocked with standard and high-end goods, as well as multiple restaurant options, with St. Orres a 5 minute walk away. There is a gym in Gualala. The Robert Muir Graves links style Sea Ranch golf course is 15 minutes drive away from the house as is the public Sea Ranch coastal trail.
