Overview

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

This is a beautifully forested 8 1/2 acre property at the end of a private 250 yard drive. The rush of Deer Creek greets you as soon as you climb out of your car. Because the property slopes down through the trees to the water you can sit on the deck and look off towards the opposite ridge or make your way down the stream and hang out among the sunlit boulders by the campsite. It feels wild down there and it is. Apart from the usual deer and raccoons, we've seen foxes and otters, bobcats and weasels, and have occasionally come across bear tracks. All of this and we're only minutes from the great restaurants and bistros in town, not to mention the four movie theaters in the area.

As for the cabin itself, it is sheltered by firs and pines and sits well away from the main lodge-style home.

There is also a beautiful campsite, complete with a tent, cots and bags, beside a large, tree shaded pool. You can spend a night roughing it, then shower in the cabin and have dinner out on the deck.

But the biggest draw is the stream itself , which is filled with wild rainbow and brown trout. These are small stream fish, the largest going around 13 inches, and catch and release fly fishing is allowed. There are also three lakes within ten miles of us, not to mention the three forks of the gorgeous Yuba river (the north fork looks like New Zealand!). And just twenty minutes south of us is the South Yuba which boasts steelhead (in season) and huge rainbows and browns.

And then there is tennis. There are any number of public courts, and pros who offer lessons, and two private clubs.

And golf, a driving range only minutes away, and three big courses within twenty five minutes.

As for skiing, Sugar Bowl and Boreal Ridge are forty minute away, the North Star resort ten minutes farther up the road in Truckee.

About Scott & Janet Swanton

Scott & Janet are transplants from Santa Monica California via the Florida Keys to Nevada City. What do all these places have in common?--fishing and lots of outdoor activities. Scott is a retired screenwriter, Janet is involved in non profits that benefit children, and neither of them can sit still.

Scott & Janet Swanton purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Scott & Janet Swanton chose Nevada City

We built the main house for ourselves and the cabin for our family and friends. But much of the time the cabin sits empty and it's such a great little place we hate to see it unused.

What makes this cabin unique

Bird watching, the nightly bat show in summer, and drinks on the deck.

a lovely getaway not far from town.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is cozy, clean and comfortable. The property has an amazing walk along Deer Creek. The best part is it's just a few minutes drive to downtown Nevada City. The hosts were friendly and easy to deal with. I would absolutely recommend this cabin.

Cozy Glamping

  • 5 of 5

My husband (and our dog!) needed a weekend getaway. We love the outdoors, but we also love the amenities of a home.

The cabin is set back far enough away from the road that it gives you the feeling you are really deep in the woods. The best part is you can hear the stream running at all times, which makes it easy to have a peaceful night sleep. The front porch leads to different trails you can take down to the mountain stream, aka Deer Creek. Scott and Janet set up a tent with cots if you want to camp out or take nap near the running stream. There's even a hammock half way down! There are groups of chairs at different sites along the stream, perfect for reading, sipping on wine or having a place to sit while trying to tire your pup who can't get enough of retrieving the ball from the stream.

The cabin is more than charming and the pictures just do not do it justice. It is equipped with everything you'll need, from a little cooler to take down to the stream, to a stellar movie collection and cozy little seating areas around the wrap-around balcony which are perfect for stargazing. Anything you don't have--just ask! Scott and Janet are more than happy to accommodate you. We can't wait to return to this charming little cabin.

Owner's Response: Hey Guys Thanks for the nice review, and very well written, too. Oh, and another thanks for something you left in the fridge -- Redtail Ale bar-b-cue sauce, great stuff, hope we can get some around here. And do get back here. You guys were fun. All the best, Scott and Janet

great cabin for a getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I returned to Scott's cabin for a second visit. It is a wonderful place to get away and just relax. My dog and I particularly enjoyed sitting buy the creek. I was reading while he played with leaves floating by in the water.

The cabin is located close to Nevada City - only a 5 minute drive and yet, gave me the feeling of being completely in the country.

The cain is both comfortable and well equipped with books, dvd's and wifi.Throughout the property, Scott has placed welcoming little spots to rest and relax: a hammock, camp chairs next to the creek and even a tent with cots. Definitely a great place to unwind. i will be coming back again soon.
