Overview

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

This is a beautifully forested 8 1/2 acre property at the end of a private 250 yard drive. The rush of Deer Creek greets you as soon as you climb out of your car. Because the property slopes down through the trees to the water you can sit on the deck and look off towards the opposite ridge or make your way down the stream and hang out among the sunlit boulders by the campsite. It feels wild down there and it is. Apart from the usual deer and raccoons, we've seen foxes and otters, bobcats and weasels, and have occasionally come across bear tracks. All of this and we're only minutes from the great restaurants and bistros in town, not to mention the four movie theaters in the area.

As for the cabin itself, it is sheltered by firs and pines and sits well away from the main lodge-style home.

There is also a beautiful campsite, complete with a tent, cots and bags, beside a large, tree shaded pool. You can spend a night roughing it, then shower in the cabin and have dinner out on the deck.

But the biggest draw is the stream itself , which is filled with wild rainbow and brown trout. These are small stream fish, the largest going around 13 inches, and catch and release fly fishing is allowed. There are also three lakes within ten miles of us, not to mention the three forks of the gorgeous Yuba river (the north fork looks like New Zealand!). And just twenty minutes south of us is the South Yuba which boasts steelhead (in season) and huge rainbows and browns.

And then there is tennis. There are any number of public courts, and pros who offer lessons, and two private clubs.

And golf, a driving range only minutes away, and three big courses within twenty five minutes.

As for skiing, Sugar Bowl and Boreal Ridge are forty minute away, the North Star resort ten minutes farther up the road in Truckee.

About Scott Swanton

Scott & Janet are transplants from Santa Monica California via the Florida Keys to Nevada City. What do all these places have in common?--fishing and lots of outdoor activities. Scott is a retired screenwriter, Janet is involved in non profits that benefit children, and neither of them can sit still.

Scott Swanton purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Scott Swanton chose Gold Country & High Sierra

We built the main house for ourselves and the cabin for our family and friends. But much of the time the cabin sits empty and it's such a great little place we hate to see it unused.

What makes this cabin unique

Bird watching, the nightly bat show in summer, and drinks on the deck.

We loved every minute!

This place.

Scott and Janet were amazing during our stay and are outstanding people overall! We can't thank you two enough.

The trails. The rushing creek. The trees. The cabin. I can't say enough good things about these things. The creek was a nice hike down a perfectly mapped trail. Once down at the creeks edge, Scott has strategically placed benches, chairs, and even a tent complete with cots and a fire pit. We spent all day down there one day and loved every single second!!! Scott and Janet are very generous for sharing this place with "strangers."

We went to both Scotts Flat Lake and Lower Scotts Flat Lake and they were both scenic and warm. We vacationed during a heat wave and the cabin stayed chilled, and all the water made the heat more bearable. Then again, it was 111* back home, so this was paradise!

Also, check out the awesome movie collection at the cabin. We really, really, really hope to visit very soon.

Owner's Response: Hey Brett Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a nice review. And I've got to say that you guys get a gold star for leaving the cabin in such immaculate shape. But I should've known you'd be that squared away by how you keep your truck. And look, the next time you come up here we'll do a little fly casting on the lawn, then take it down to the stream. Thanks again, Scott and Janet

What a wonderful cabin and vacation

  • 5 of 5

Scott and Janet's cabin is a gem. Tucked away in the outskirts of Nevada City, you are really in the outdoors but only 2 miles from charming Nevada City. The cabin is warm and just right for our family of four that includes our twin 8 year old girls and our dog. Deer Creek is a short trail hike from the front door and we thoroughly enjoyed walking down there and exploring the forest and the creek. We're looking forward to returning, hopefully soon. We can't recommend this place enough.

Loved this Totally Charming Creekside Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin in the trees was a perfect hideaway for two (although the bunk bedroom had plenty of room for two more). The friendly owners, Scott and Janet, are great and they thought of everything we could need for a wonderful stay. It was clean and comfortably furnished, well stocked, and the decor was rustic and charming even better than the pictures! We enjoyed looking at the interesting pieces of history scattered throughout the cabin. My husband brought a little work so he appreciated the strong wi-fi. Because the cabin was private and tucked away in the trees we were pleasantly surprised how quick it was to drive to Nevada City.

The trails throughout the beautiful grounds are meticulously maintained with seating scattered here and there so you can just sit and watch the river, or sit IN the river. Even though I took a spill that put an end to our exploring, (Janet kindly brought me an ice pack for the sprain) our getaway wasn't ruined because the view from the deck, the sound of the river, the comfy cabin, and the wonderful smell and beauty of the trees still made it a lovely trip. (no pun intended. :D) I keep talking about charm because it's one of the top things I hope to find when I travel and this cabin filled the bill. I almost don't want to keep saying how charmingly perfect this place and its owners are because y'all will want to book it up and we want to come back, lol! But it really was everything we were hoping for and we think others will love it too. Scott and Janet, thanks for sharing your beautiful property and cabin!

Great cabin on beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

My wife and 6-month-old daughter holed up here for three nights this summer. The cabin was very cozy, clean and comfortable with a great little deck. But what really sold the place for us was the gorgeous 8+-acre property we had access to. It included beautifully maintained trails and a great creekside campsite/lounging area. Scott and Janet live next door and were there to greet us, but otherwise gave us sufficient space. Three relatively minor things that I thought needed some improvement: updated kitchen utensils (especially the knives), a gas grill (rather than charcoal) and more comfortable deck chairs. Otherwise, this was a pretty great find. We definitely hope to return.

Remote Cabin feel within striking distance of town

  • 5 of 5

This was an amazing getaway for a couple of nights and days. We felt welcomed yet privacy was never a concern.

The owners do an awesome job keeping this cabin and the property in top notch condition. Access to the creek is just a matter of hiking a short distance on the private trails which are impressively well maintained.

Next time we stay we plan on taking advantage of the creek side campsite more than we did this last trip.

Thank you again for an awesome stay and we hope to see you in the coming months for another visit.
