Because this is a working property, we do require a signed contract that outlines safety and security requirements. We're happy to share this ahead of time if you send an enquiry. The final agreement is completed through our management system upon booking, and we do require a copy of your government issued ID.
Well-behaved dogs are permitted only if arranged in advance. Sorry, no cats or other pets allowed. It may be tempting to let dogs run in our fields, but dogs must be on a leash at all times. Please bring your dog’s bedding as they are not permitted on the furniture or bedding. We do provide dog bowls and dog towels. You will be required to agree to an addendum to the standard rental agreement that outlines rules for dogs at our ranch.
WINTER STAYS: This house has lovely, original wavy-glass windows that give views a watercolor-like feel, and it's magical in the snow. However, the house is very drafty. We have insulated curtains and blinds, but when outdoor winter temperatures drop to freezing, it is hard to keep the house heated to 68 degrees. There are plenty of extra blankets, but please be aware and prepared.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

2 friends and I had a crafting weekend and absolutely LOVED the house! The covered porch was great for morning coffee, the chairs were very comfortable to sit in for 8 hours while cross stitching, the beds were super comfortable, and the claw foot tub was relaxing and perfect. My friends set up seeing machines on the dining room table and had plenty of space. The host was so quick to respond when we had questions and it was a wonderful experience. We will definitely be going again!
Our time at the ranch house was so peaceful! Second visit here, we love the house, land, and views. And the hosts are so accommodating and warm. Highly recommend!
My self and my three kids stayed here and it was a great experience. I loved the style of the house and the simplicity of it. It had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well outfitted.
This what the perfect solution for our family while visiting our family in Cowlitz county. Cheaper than two hotel rooms and very charming. Wish we would have had more time to hang out on the property.
Beautiful Property With Amazing Views. Cute Cottage
Really great time staying here. Extremely quiet and pleasant. Location is amazing. Saw a handful of deer and small foxes. Interior was very comfortable and cool during summer. Great for the price. Felt safe.
We stayed at the Newman Ranch after the birth of our daughter. It was just the kind of serene healing retreat we needed. The house was immaculate and very comfortable in every way. Thank you Liz for your gracious hosting, we will always treasure this stay and the memories our family made here.

Ande it really touches my heart you chose the ranch for such a special time. I'm so happy it met your expectations. It was a pleasure meeting your family, and congratulations on your new daughter. Truly - very best wishes.
The most peaceful, beautiful stay. The host went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible, and her communication was top notch. The house has been tastefully updated and you cannot beat the scenery. You’ll be tucked into the rolling hills of Kalama with a view of the river, with a sense of calm that seems so rare to find nowadays. Don’t wait, book it!
My 2nd stay at the ranch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am able to have my family come up and visit and there's plenty of room. The communication with the owner of the ranch has been flawless and check in as well as check out and my entire trip have been an enjoyment . I will look forward to staying there again when I return!

Lynn, I'm just so happy for you and your family. Thank you for your kind words. -Liz
This was my second stay at the property, and just wow. So relaxing and peaceful, and when we had the most minor inconvenience, Liz zipped over and offered to help. Top notch host, historical cozy farmhouse, serene landscape!
A well maintained old farmhouse with a lot of original charm... including NO TV's! And still plenty for the kids to do. It has all the amenities needed, clean comfortable beds & well stocked. Close enough to the freeway for convenience but far enough for dad, mom & 5 kids to finish out the day. Would definitely stay again if in the area.
Stayed here with family and little ones, such a peaceful getaway! The ranch house is surrounded by nature with beautiful views. The house and land has so much history and character, we felt lucky to experience the place.
Owners are so thoughtful and nice! House has all the amenities you need too. We’ll be back!
Communication top notch, checked for any needs and responsive to my high maintenance needs and questions prior to stay. I loved the binder with history I really felt like I was blessed to stay in gramas house. So peaceful take time to sit and enjoy the view, trees, and the sounds of a quiet old farm house. Really thank you, Liz
..
This was such a great spot to enjoy some quality family time unplugged. From the well stocked kitchen to cook healthy food while on vacation to the spectacular view, everything was amazing. My daughter is usually glued to electronics but with no tv to distract her we read, played games, and all enjoyed each other's company. We are already planning when to go back.
wonderful location. we were fishing and the property was very good for location and parking. Liz was fantastic with communication. pros-very clean, location, parking, beds, cookware, ease of checkout, view scape. cons-the only problem was the shower/bath tub. Large tub, very deep with oval shower curtain around for showers, No handholds to get in and out or hold onto while in the shower. Could potentially be a hazard. Would definitely stay again.
A nice country farmhouse that accommodated seven of us comfortably while we were in the area for a few days to attend a wedding. The kids loved roaming the property and checking out the fruit trees and we all enjoyed the provided board games in the evening. A nice and quiet, family orientated, country retreat. Communication with the property owner was outstanding as she was very quick to respond and very accommodating. If in the area again, I will definitely try to book this location. Highly recommended.
We booked the property looking for a convenient place to stay while fishing in the area.
What we got was a friendly accommodating host who made sure we had everything we needed (thanks Liz). The place is an older home, beautifully updated to preserve the historic feel. The home sits on a grassy pasture with territorial views.
While it was perfectly located for our fishing trip it made for a really cool place to relax after a long day on the river.
I’ll consider coming back with the family.
I thought the house was adorable. The only concern with the home is that it was colder than I would like. It would be nice to have plenty of heaters to warm the home. Also, would love the windows in the bedrooms to have window coverings for privacy as well as keeping the light out in the morning. It would be perfect other than that. Thank you for sharing your property.

Thank you so much for the constructive comment. It has been SUCH a crazy fall! It's hard to believe we just pulled the A/C out of the bedroom window last week. I wish you'd let me know you were cold, I would have run the extra heaters down to you. They are there there now!
Thank you so much for choosing the ranch; we're happy you visited.

About the host
Hosted by Liz Newman
The Newman Family purchased the ranch in the 1950s. The ranch house was built in 1910, and the remains of the 100-yard long chicken barn can still be seen on site. Southwest Washington was a record producing chicken and egg producer during that time.
There was a large Finnish community in this area and the remains of a Finnish sauna can be seen in the corner of the yard.
Grandpa Bill and Grandma Mettie Newman settled on nearby Newman Road in the early part of the century before moving to this property. The Newmans owned a significant portion of this little valley in the mid- to late-1900s. Bill Newman trained horses; Scottish Highland cattle were run on the property in the later part of the century; and sheep were raised here until their son, Jim Newman, passed away in 2018.
Why they chose this property
This is the most peaceful place. Everyone who visits wants to stay.
As you drive up from Sauer Road, you will pass through shady trees along our creek and the view opens like magic across the pastures to Oregon, you round a curve and see the beautiful old house, and you feel transported to another time.
The house sits in the middle of 20 acres of fields which are then surrounded by forest. Hours can pass when you're relaxing on the front porch or the sun porch. Deer and coyotes are frequent visitors - attracted by the old orchard trees.
What makes this property unique
The house is mostly original but freshly painted with new beds, linens, etc.
It is a vintage working ranch house with a few extras like high ceilings, vintage light fixtures, and a claw-foot tub. It truly is an escape but very close to Interstate 5, Portland, Oregon, and Mt St Helens.
Our lovely town of Kalama is a joy to visit. Kalama is a railroad town and the home of "the first spike" in the railroad that was constructed north and then back east. A free museum of this history is located at the Port of Kalama on the banks of the Columbia River along with McMenamins Kalama Harbor Lodge and beautiful parks and beaches.
