Why Joe Curley chose Marathon

This property is in a is private location and offers one of the best open water views in Marathon - this is not your typical canal front home. A crystal clear deepwater lagoon that's up to 25' deep at the center allows for plenty of dockage and easy boat access to open water with 75' of waterfront dockage. Or just relax with a great view or fish and dive right from the dock. The property also has plenty of room for your cars and trailers. It also has the flexibility to be rented as either a 4 bedroom 4 bath as advertised or economically as a 2 bedroom 2 bath for smaller parties. We love to fish, boat and dive and there in no better place in the States to do this other than the Florida Keys. We were sick of the over-fished waters and crowded streets of South Florida so we went south - all the way south to the Keys. Marathon is centrally located to these great outdoor activities plus has two of the nicest beaches in the Keys nearby, has great restaurants, parks, activities and shopping and is a short drive to destinations like Key West, John Pennecamp State Park, and offers some of the best access to aquatic wildlife, beautiful reefs and other offshore destinations.

What makes this house unique

Besides the great open water view, easy open water access, great dockage....? This is a full duplex meaning you get two beautifully decorated and very comfortable homes on the same property. This is a great set-up when vacationing with large groups or extended family with varying energy levels. Hang out together all day but retreat to your own private residence at the end of the day - or party together - it's your choice because it's all yours when you're vacationing at this great property. All the amenities of home. Two full kitchen with custom cabinets and granite counter, full dining areas, comfortable couches, flat screen TVs, premium cable, high-speed wireless internet access, and phones. It's of course stocked with all the kitchen ware, linens, and towels. I also offer kayaks and bikes for your recreation

Guestbook comments from the owner

FIVE STARS - Great Place

Excellent place. Great master bedroom with excellent bed. Twin beds were a little soft but OK. Great kitchen and views. Quiet place. Some airplane noise but only small planes. We used the bikes and kayaks and swam right off the dock area. 2 Large Tarpon (4 ft) swam by within 2 ft of the dock. Small barracuda in the area but no problem to swiming. Nice beach in Marathon. Nice location to go to Key west and also to Everglades for day trips.

Excellent Lobster Trip 2016

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful duplex that comfortably accommodated our party of 10 for lobster mini season. The location is extremely convenient and so easy to access the water without having to deal with chaos of Vaca cut. The duplex easily accommodated our 28 foot boot for the week, with no issues to dock our boat. The houses are divided so provided privacy to all guests. We all enjoyed meeting for coffee in the morning or cocktails in the evening under the house that provided a great entertaining space. There were ample amount of towels and linens. The kitchens were comfortably stocked and provided everything we needed and more. We made breakfast in the house and lots of appetizers. While we had 10 adults, this would also be a good unit to use with older kids. We had easy access by car to several of our favorite restaurants in town and just a short drive for day adventure to Key West. The owners were extremely responsive while booking, before our reservation began and even while we were enjoying our vacation. We had an absolute great time, and definitely would love to stay here again.

In Need of Maintenance

  • 1 of 5

I want to give a fair review and just be truthful with our experience with renting this duplex. We had a wonderful vacation and enjoyed our stay but there were some frustration and I believe that the owner just needs to be aware of some of the issues. The 2 major issues were that the doors did not lock properly. One of duplex’s did not lock at all so every day we put our valuables in the car to lock them up. The other main issue was that the dock as it was unsafe, especially with young children and could be a potential liability for the owner. We were told that it was from recent storm damage, but it is clearly from neglect as all other docks in the area are in perfect shape. We were almost not able to rent a boat as they came over to inspect and said that it has been neglected. As far as the inside of the duplex’s it is mostly cosmetic neglect, lack of cooking utensils and supplies. It is a shame because it is a beautiful property and lagoon but is just in desperate need of repair. It has the potential to be a great property but right now we would not stay there again.

Owner's Response: I'll start out by saying that the dock pilings that this customer is complaining about have been repaired. It was damaged by a September storm and unfortunately it was not possible to repair it prior to this guests stay. They were informed in advance and could have made alternate lodging arrangements. We're not sure why she would question us on the cause as we informed her 2 weeks prior to their stay that the new pilings wouldn’t be in place in-time. It was an unfortunate situation and we wanted her to know so that she could make necessary arrangements with the boat rental company or make alternate lodging arrangements. We can't control mother nature and this system was well documented. As far neighbors’ docks being perfect – they weren’t damaged by the storm because they didn’t have boats tied to them at the time of storm 7 (guest boats pulling on the pilings caused the damage). We also advised the boat rental company that they would have to provide larger fenders. It obviously must have worked out because they rented them a boat after seeing the dock. I'm not sure how lack of wood pilings on a seawall would endanger children – they aren’t used to tie up boats, not children.  There was a reported problem with one of the locks and it was repaired on that Monday (check-in was Saturday and the customer told us about the problem mid-day on Sunday). I'm honestly not surprised by the negative review. This guest wore us down with multiple daily requests for minor items. First they wanted more bikes than the home came with - we provided them from another home. She had trouble turning on the lights, fans, locking doors, needed directions to locations, etc. To be more specific on the lack of utensils, she requested muffin tins and a food processor and was upset we wouldn't go purchased these items for her. Muffin Tin???? She was a very high maintenance guest to say the least. In closing, as you can see by the other reviews, this property gets consistent 4-5 star ratings.

Great Duplex

  • 5 of 5

Rented this duplex. it was perfect. kids in one unit, adults in the other. the East unit was very nice w granite countertops and nice leather furniture. the west unit (where the kids stayed was nice as well, though not as updated. great views of the cove and a minute boat ride into the gulf where we spent time waterskiing and watching the sunsets. We rented a boat for the week and we basically spent our week on the water snorkeling, diving, fishing, skiing, exploring. It is perfect for the family on the go who like water activities. I would recommend this rental to anyone. it was clean, well equipped, stayed nice and cool and allowed everyone their space. my only negative was that the beds were a bit soft for my tastes.

Relaxing Vacation for the Family

  • 5 of 5

Our vacation was very relaxing and enjoyable. Our arrival was met with an very clean home. The home is located in a very beautiful area. We especially enjoyed the kayak's and easy access to the Gulf. It was amazing to see the manatee's come right to the dock. Standing on the dock watching fish was exciting for the kids. We would vacation again at this exact location. Thank you Joe and Mary.

Holiday Week in the Keys with the Entire Family

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place to acommodate kids, grandkids and a foreighn exchange student. With the addtion of the downstairs "hospitality suite" it worked out perfectly. Excellent location on a large lagoon.

Sea turtles, various fish, rays and manatees visited each day. A pair of double kayaks (come with house)and 3 of our own allowed us to enjoy the water en masse. Marathon turned out to be an unexpected treat. Nice beaches and great restaurants provided nice side trips when we weren't simply enjoying the great ambiance of the house. Enjoyed our stay very much and would stay there again.
