Perfect Location for a Relaxing Vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

We will definately visit again! Brittain's Beacon was recommended by a friend and admittedly we were a little weary after reading the most resent review. I can only assume they posted to the wrong address or something because it most certainly does not reflect the house that we enjoyed. The atmosphere and feel of the house (including being stocked with absolutely everything you could possible need) made it feel more like a home away from home!! The house was clean upon arrival and we certainly appreciated the sheets being folded and placed on top of each bed knowing that we were receiving clean linens. The ice machine was an unexpected luxury (we will expect one on every vacation now) being able to have ice on demand to fill coolers for the beach without continuously running to the store was great. The size of the house was exactly as described, it provided plenty of room and privacy if needed. The downstairs was perfect for the older kids and what a great idea with the Murphy beds, the kids liked just folding them up (and not making their bed everyday of course) to have plenty of activity space especially on our one rainy day. Make sure you bring all of your groceries with you because you are not going to want to leave the beautiful views from the deck! Mrs Brittain, expect to be hearing from us soon. This will be a great venue for the entire family to celebrate an upcoming graduation!

Nothing Special. Dirty and Disappointed.

  • 1 of 5

Arrived to Brittains Beacon around 830pm on Thursday, check in was supposed to be anytime after 3pm. After a long 12 hour day of driving we were looking forward to some hot showers and bed. Instead we arrived to a completely dark house that hadn't been cleaned since the previous renters! Dirty dishes in the sink, coffee still in the pot, trash in all of the trash cans, floors were filthy and none of the linens on the beds had been changed! Absolutely disgusting. We called Janet and she apologized, saying it was a clerical error. She sent the cleaning lady over with a bag of linens for us to change ourselves....gee thanks. The cleaning lady dropped off the linens and asked if we wanted her to come back the next morning....ummm yes...we paid for a clean house!? She came by with her husband the next day and they were very nice but it was awkward while we tried to settle in with 2 strangers cleaning around us. We had moved in and eaten breakfast so all they could clean was a quick once over in the bathrooms. I wasn't downstairs when they came through to clean the lower bathroom but was told by one of our guests that they got the 3rd degree for not putting the sheets on correctly the night before.

One of the three showers only had ice cold water, the other bathroom upstairs had a leaky faucet that would not turn off, and the cockroach welcoming us at the front door topped off the weekend.

The upstairs and downstairs are NOT connected. They are two completely separate living spaces, and you must use the outside stairs to get to one or the other.

The only good thing about this house was the proximity to the beach. But be sure to wear sunscreen, if you get burnt the towels and sheets provided will rub you raw.

I voiced my complaints to Janet the first night we arrived and after sending the cleaning lady by with our sheets, never heard from her again.

Great place for a vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Brittain's Beacon! This is the second time we've stayed here and would recommend it to anyone looking to get away from it all. The home has lots of room and everyone was very comfortable. The kitchen is well-stocked and there is an icemaker for those fishermen who need to ice down their catch! The home sits just across the street from the beach in a very quiet neighborhood. The owner also has board games and books for family members looking for something to do in the evenings. We grilled out frequently and just enjoyed sitting outside enjoying the company and the wonderful sounds and sights of the beach! We will definitely be back!

Great house Great location

  • 5 of 5

Janet's house was perfect for our large family. The upstairs unit had 4 nice size bedrooms, 2 on either side of the house with a shared bathroom between them. The living room-kitchen held everyone nicely and the deck looking out to the Gulf was quite lovely for hanging out before meals and watching the water and dolphins. Then there is also the downstairs unit with another big bedroom plus a small one that worked perfectly for our married daughter with two little boys. They could be upstairs with everyone else, but then had their own space to go to bed early (or wake up early) so no one else was disturbed. Walking to the beach was a breeze. Lots of grocery stores nearby. Janet has everything needed in the kitchen and more - definitely the best stocked kitchen we've had in years. She was also very helpful making suggestions for us about places to eat out or where to buy fresh seafood. We drove the whole way from New Orleans one way and took the ferry back going home, definitely recommend the ferry. We would be happy to stay there again.

Better Every Time

  • 5 of 5

This is the fifth time I have stayed here, and it gets better each time. The owners are wonderful to work with and the home is very comfortable and well maintained. It is an off-season Paradise, with a beautiful panoramic Gulf view from the living room, and a deck where it is often warm even when the beach is cool. The neighborhood has quiet paved streets for easy walking and biking. My dogs and other friends who visit Brittain's Beacon agree that it is the best vacation home in the area, any time of the year!

Wonderful Fall Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Accommodations were wonderful, the view and access to the beach was perfect. We loved the privacy and having large bedroom rooms with TVs. Loved the kitchen with all the amenities and especially enjoyed the huge coffee maker and outside ice machine. The wi-fi gave us opportunity to research near-by attractions and restaurants. We also enjoyed watching the movie channels on the big screen! The deck was a great place for morning coffee and the view at night was amazing. Being able to open our bedroom windows and hearing the waves really put us in vacation mode. This home will definitely be a place me and my family will come back to for years to come. This is truly the best place we have stayed at in Gulf Shores.
