Best of the Best!

Wow, wow, wow! This was our first stay at Fortune Cottage and we will be back. The cottage is large, clean, perfectly equipped (kitchen gear/beach gear and towels) and perfectly located if you are looking for a relaxing stay. It's probably best for one couple, a couple with small children or a small group of girlfriends as the wall between the bedrooms is not solid (louvered windows). It was just the two of us so it was perfect. I never once showered inside as there is something magical about showering outdoors, even in the rain. We ate most of our meals on the deck just off the kitchen or on the front deck since this truly is the best seat on the island. The location is remote enough to be peaceful, but close enough to Princeville to be convenient to run to the store for a last minute need. Theresa was super helpful and responded to our questions immediately (Thanks Theresa!). Heaven is being able to walk out the front door directly to the beach with morning coffee in hand, jump on a paddle board (Rented in Kilauea) and spend the morning drifting about watching sea turtles pop up for air. Vacations past have been adventure filled busy days, but this time we hated the thought of leaving the property so we mostly stayed at home exploring and enjoying Anini Beach. I can't say enough good things about Fortune Cottage and so grateful we discovered this little piece of paradise. Go, go, go!!!

Wow! This was the best vacation spot ever! I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a quiet relaxing place with a stunning view of the ocean and only steps from a sparsely populated beach with good swimming and snorkeling. It is a great place to hang out- inside the house, on the beach and in the yard with the ocean view. I have stayed at Anini beach many times but this was the first time in this house and it was the best! There were good beach towels, chairs, umbrellas and snorkels. Its simple and beautiful. Definitely important to know that the bedrooms are separated by windows that support the ventilation so its find for a couple and their children or two single friends. If you are wanting to be around civilization and restaurants and activities, this is probably not the place for you but then maybe another island would be a better choice. I can't wait to go back!!!

Owner's Response: Anne, I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. The owners love of the home shows throughout the home ! It is off the beaten path, but just 10 minutes to the restaurants and shopping from both Hanalei and Princeville , where you can find boat tours, surfing, hele rides , kayaks and rental equipment such as paddleboards, surfboards, snorkel gear can be delivered to your home !

Our home away from home

My husband and I have been coming to Kauai for almost 30 years. About 20 years ago, the property manager for the Fortune Cottage (Therese) saved us when we rented another Anini cottage that was a nightmare. She had an unexpected opening at the Fortune, we moved in and we have been coming back ever since. Therese is gracious, accommodating and is quick to help! The cottage is perfect for a couple. The master bedroom has a comfortable bed and is open and airy. The second bedroom is perfect for storing all of your gear! Nice kitchen and exquisite views from the living area. The only thing that would improve the house is a covered lanai (it is nice to be outside in the sun or rain). Thank you, Therese, for 20 years of bliss at Anini!!!!!!!!

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your review, you have been wonderful guest for years ! One thing , you say there is no covered lanai, but there is a partial roof , with a table and 2 chairs, where there is a full ocean view, it just does not wrap around. Plenty of coverage for the two guest the cottage holds and enable outside dinning.

Little Tahiti!

We really enjoy our stay at the Fortune Cottage. The ocean views are fantastic and the home is comfortable and easy to keep up. The outdoor shower is a real pleasure and fun to experience! The master bedroom has a very comfortable king size bed. The middle bedroom would be ideal for a small child, as there are two twin beds there. Nearby grocery shopping and restaurants are an added plus. We will return!

Honeymoon Stay (I wish I could give 4.5 stars)

  • 4 of 5

Our stay at Fortune Cottage was amazing - the house was as advertised, and the beach was spectacular. We swam, snorkeled, laid on the beach - and for 8 days, only spent one day away from the beach and the house - so I can tell you that we feel we know the cabin and beach pretty well!

Overall, the cabin / house was amazing and everything you need - here are some pros and cons of the house and its location.

Great View - From the porch, house, etc - a spectacular view

Great Beach - Safe, and it was never busy

The kitchen was great, good size, new appliances, a very nice pot and pan set, it has a dishwasher and about everything you need - the only thing lacking was a quality knife set, but for a vacation rental, there was enough to make do. We cooked at the house for 3 meals a day, 7 of the days and the kitchen was great.

The living room has a great view of the beach and the TV worked fine the one night we used it - internet was easy to access and faster than I thought it would be.

The bathroom was great, an awesome large tile shower with a window to the outside (head level) .

The bedroom was fine, a nice king sized bed.

The location was great, a nice bakery with awesome pizza and such is around 10 minutes away, as is a full grocery store (kinda pricey, so as Therese recommended, do your shopping at Costco and Safeway).

Brand new washer and dryer, great outdoor shower, nice charcoal BBQ.

The cabin was wired for lighting after it was built, which means there isn't much for quality overhead lighting. For areas like the bedroom, the single light and a bedside light aren't the greatest for reading at night - For me to give the place 5 stars, it would need some better overhead lighting.

On the same note, the cabin overall was somewhat "dark" - some lighter colors on things like the bed spread, etc, would probably help some.

A few notes:

For those who don't know, the Hawaiian islands do have wild chickens - expect to hear them in the morning, and you will get used to them after a couple mornings.

The bedrooms (2) are not super private of each other - just something to know if you plan on having more than 2 people go.

This is a cabin, and it is highly functional - it is not luxurious, but for the price, it is a great value and we have absolutely no regrets and we would recommend staying here.

Furthermore, beyond the cabin itself, Therese from Serenity Rentals is great to deal with and will answer every question you could have.

Owner's Response: Mahalo, for your great review and taking the time to do so ! I just want to let you know that the ceiling fans lights, which are in all rooms have a separate wall switch to turn on, I am thinking maybe you did not realize that. I am so glad this will be part of your memories and you enjoyed the home and location ! Therese
