Ultimate Northwoods Retreat

Bedrooms 4
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Cabin, 4 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

LaBri is the ultimate Northwoods retreat. LaBri means shelter or calm place in French, and you will understand why as you pull down the drive to an inviting one level log cabin. The kids will run around to the lakefront, passing a hammock strung between trees, en-route to the multiple watercraft lined up for their enjoyment. Canoes, kayaks, inflatable water toys, a 14 foot fishing boat await them. The pier invites them out, as they gaze longingly at the swim raft.

Meanwhile, you will enter the living space to find a real Northwoods retreat. The kitchen is equipped with every modern appliance, including the sub zero fridge, and the cabinets reveal every cooking and baking spice you may wish for during your stay. 2 wood burning fireplaces and a large screened in porch will begin to paint the picture of your time to come. Games for all ages are available and the martini glasses stand proud in the cabinet.

Serenity surrounds you as you listen to the haunting cry of the resident pair of loons, zealously protecting a chick or two in the spring or early summer. The eagles will be circling, also looking for the newborn loon chicks. Check out the multiplicity of wildlife, including birds, squirrels of many colors, otters, and the ever present deer. Fill up the bird feeder and watch from the kitchen window, as the deer come through in a parade at night.

Grab a sundowner in the gazebo, and listen to the happy screams of your children playing in the lake. Muskellunge await the clever fisher people, whilst the little fisher people will find the little fishes all day long off the end of the dock.

The fire pit by the lake has hosted countless schmoors parties, and awaits you. Remain quietly after the kids are gone, and you may well be visited by the hoot of the owl.

The forest and trails that surround LaBri make for endless hiking and biking in the summer, and snowshoeing, and cross country skiing in the winter. The slopes of Indianhead and Powderhorn mountains lie just 45 minutes to the north in the UP of Michigan.

Summer or winter LaBri will massage your soul. Come stay with us. It is very likely you will return.

About The Owner

Rick, Helen, Christopher, Taylor and Anna Sweitzer are the proud owners of LaBri. Rick owns and runs an adventure travel company, The Northwest Passage, and Helen is an artist, who runs the Women's program for a large refugee resettlement agency in Chicago. We all love the outdoors, with an emphasis on quiet sports. Skiing, hiking, biking, and paddling are high on our list of loves.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1995

Why The Owner chose Boulder Junction

We chose this place because of its evident and very good Karma. Located a very easy and drivable distance from Chicago, and smack dab in the midst of the boreal forest, it offers us the instant peacefulness required.

What makes this cabin unique

You will enjoy the fact that LaBri is not a 'rental' unit. It is our second home, replete with books, artwork, nice furnishings, and tastefully 'knickknacked'. Old skis and snowshoes adorn the walls and the quiet will force you into calm.

Summer Escape

  • 5 of 5

Our party of 5 spent a wonderful week at LaBri this summer. During prior stays we had parties of 8 each time. The cabin is large enough to comfortably accommodate 8, yet retains the quaintness of a smaller cabin.

The north end of the lake on which the property resides is very quiet and lined with lily-pads. At dusk each evening, the bull-frog serenade begins, interrupted periodically by the haunting call of loons that are either floating nearby or flying over the lake. We love these background lake noises.

The cabin faces the east. If we aren’t out on the lake fishing in the early morning hours, we watch the sunrise from the spacious screen porch. We saw a deer walk out of the woods to stop at the lakeshore for a refreshing drink, and a band of raccoons foraging the shoreline for their breakfast. We also saw other lake wildlife; soaring bald eagles, a family of muskrats playing on the lake surface, otters, and ducks. The lake water is very clear, and we were able to watch a rather large snapping turtle swim out from under the dock 2 consecutive evenings at dusk.

We choose to rent the pontoon boat that is offered. It’s nice to be able to bring the whole family out on the lake.

The cabin has everything we need for a week stay, we just bring our food, beverages, clothes, and fishing gear. The washer and dryer are amenities we did not have at other cabins we have rented. It’s great not to have to run to a laundromat if we need to wash some clothes during the week!

The large screen porch I mentioned earlier is our gathering space. We ate almost every meal out there and played games out there each night. It is wonderful to be out in the lake air without being bothered by the bugs. The string of ceiling lights Helen added this year was a big hit! Very festive.

Thanks Rick and Helen for sharing LaBri with us. We have some 2018 scheduling challenges to work out, but we are hoping to return for another stay next summer.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Steve, for your kind and gracious words. They reflect the same experience we have had as a family at Labri for over 20 years. As you note, it has an amazing location for wildlife, serenity and a pleasing North Woods experience. The family who just vacated, following your stay, noted in an email this am, that just one mile from Labri, on the drive out, they waited for a mother bear and 3 cubs to vacate the road, to pass. They noted it as a very appropriate highlight end to their week long family visit. We are excited that you honor us with a return next summer. Until then, best wishes. rick and helen

Beautiful home with all the amenities including canoe, kayaks, paddle boards and the possibility of renting a pontoon boat. The natural surroundings were stunning, and we had luck fishing. Access to bikes and nearby beautiful bike paths. Great fire pit right down by the lake. A true jewel!

Snow filled fun!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family traveled to La Bri for President's Day weekend and had a blast! The cabin is so comfortable and cozy, it really felt like home. The kids had so much fun out on the ice and sledding in the snow. We spent a day skiing nearby at White Cap mountain and it couldn't have been more convenient to come back to La Bri! Night skies filled with stars completely mesmerized our girls as they watched them through the many skylights. The full kitchen and large number of bedrooms and bathrooms were great to have as well.

Wonderful family memories were made, and we can't wait to return to a little piece of heaven in the woods!

Great Winter Get Away

  • 5 of 5

Another fabulous family weekend at La Bri. This is our fourth family winter trip up North for skiing and snowy winter fun and we are making plans for next year. La Bri is a cozy place to get away from it all and rest at the end of a day exploring the North Woods. There is a wonderful kitchen, lots of room to spread out and comfortable gathering spaces to share a meal, play games or watch the flames dancing in the fireplace. Get outside at night to watch the moon rise over the lake and enjoy the stars without city light pollution. With snow toys in the garage, a sled-able driveway, plenty of yard space between the house and lake, and an auger to try Ice fishing, there is lots to do without leaving the property. Inside there are heaps of books and games, a jacuzzi tub, and great views to help you enjoy a slower pace. Fabulous x-country skiing nearby and alpine skiing about 45 minutes away in the UP. "Downtown" Boulder Junction is a short drive away with a skating rink, small sled hill, gas, groceries, shops, and restaurants. We find new things to love every year and cherish the memories we make. Thanks Rick and Helen!

wonderful stay at LaBri

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous one week stay at LaBri and the week is one we will always remember. Rick and Nancy were wonderful with checking in on our stay and everything was very organized and easy to find. We travelled as a family of 4 with 2 small children - ages 1.5 and 5. The highchair and jogging stroller were very convenient and we loved having all of the space. We took advantage of everything LaBri had to offer - meals on the gorgeous screened in porch overlooking the lake, played games in the gazebo on the water, rented the pontoon boat for the day, had fun rowboat rides every day, explored the woods, photographed beautiful sunrises, sunsets, bald eagles, birds, river otters, chipmunks, and more, had smores in the fire pit every evening, saw a lumberjack show, fished, swam, took nature walks, napped on the hammock, so much to list!! It was a week we will always remember and we loved every minute. The lake is so peaceful and quiet - it was just magical to catch the sunrises. The house is very private and I think we saw maybe 3 fishing boats tops a day. The river otters would come out in the afternoon and turtles swam around my fishing lures. I cannot say enough how great the fishing is for a small child. My son is 5 and he would catch a smaller perch or bluegill within 30 seconds of casting. He was so excited to fish and it was great that the water was clear enough to even see the fish get the worm from the dock!! We saw a fun lumberjack show in Woodruff which was fun for the kids. The bedrooms are gorgeous and there is so much space. It was great having a washer and dryer. We did fish with a guide Jeff Winters for a half day and I was excited to catch a pike and Ryan a bluegill. The weather was fabulous and we couldn't have asked for a better vacation. Great memories for sure! We will be back!! Thank you so much to Rick and Helen for sharing your beautiful home with us!!

Owner's Response: Thank you Lisa, for the very kind words and the volume of pix you forwarded to us this week. The smiles of your children are such a clear memory of our children growing up and enjoying the outdoor wonders of Labri and the North woods. Some amazing wildlife shots also of the perched bald eagle, the loonies with the little one, the fishes, turtles and muskrats! We do hope to see you all again. warm regards, rick and helen

Northwoods Winter Wonderland!

  • 5 of 5

We have been travelling up to La Bri for several years now and highly recommend this slice of the Northwoods. The cabin is well outfitted with a large and open kitchen area. The kitchen blends well into the main living space and allows for easy entertaining and enjoying the fire. The large windows and sliding glass doors invite the picturesque Little Crocked Lake right into the living room. There was plenty of split logs for the fireplace. The driveway was plowed, shovels made it easy to clear up the front walk. Washer and Dryer made it easy to dry up the kids wet clothes from a day in the snow. You know you have the place to yourself when your the only tire tracks down bear lake road. Thank you Helen and Rick for another memorable Northwoods experience with our family.
