Why Michelle Porter chose Cutler
This cottage was my husband's grandmother's home, which we inherited. We lovingly renovated it, knowing she would want us to share it with others. Being over 100 years old with all the original features of an old New England home. It provides an authentic experience that takes you back in time with all the comforts of modern day.
What makes this House unique
Visitors can enjoy a variety of things to do just minutes from our cottage, from hiking the amazing Western Head trails to walking a quarter of mile to the working wharf where you can actually purchase lobsters from the local fishermen. It is also just a short walk to a beach for beachcombing. The opportunity to go on Puffin tours as well as sightseeing tours is only one mile from our cottage. But, more relaxing is just the ability to enjoy views of our friendly active fishing village at sunrise while sipping coffee from our wrap-around deck. Those of you who choose to book a week or more in May-June or Sept.-Oct can enjoy a unique lobster fishing experience, complementary . This journey begins aboard the working fishing vessel the "BRITTAN A" and takes you through the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. During this unforgettable experience you will travel through picturesque Cutler Harbor, along the rugged coastline and past the historical Little River Lighthouse. You can participate as we guide you through the daily routines of a Maine Lobsterman or just enjoy the beautiful scenery. Get an up-close and personal Maine lobstering experience. While hauling traps you will learn how the lobster gets from the bottom of the ocean to your plate, as well as the fishermen's terminology, habits and conservation of lobsters....By the end of your journey you will return to the cottage with a few caught lobsters to enjoy at your next meal!-(Limited spaces available)

Unique Character and Charm.
At 100+ years old the home exudes unique character and charm. The beds are comfy, the water is hot, linens are plentiful, and the home is very clean but there are some things to be aware of if your have any physical limitations.
All bedrooms are up a very, very narrow steep flight of stairs. The upstairs ceiling height varies and tall people must use caution. 2 of the queen beds share a room. On the main floor, the floor itself has settled and is uneven in places. There is a bathroom upstairs but with only a clawfoot tub, the main bath with tub/shower is downstairs.
I spent 2 very comfortable weeks in this home when in the area for work. As a mother, I wouldn't select this home for a family vacation with very young kids due to the stairs and antique decor but for older kids and the grownups who love lobster village charm with their BBQ and wine, you'll very much enjoy your stay. The Owners are very nice, responsive, and accommodating.
Bring your own basic staples from the grocery in Machias. The home didn't have much in the way of salt & pepper type basics. There were enough pots-n-pans and place settings to host a thanksgiving feast. Each property is different so just a heads up.
Glad you thought our 100 year old authentic New England home was charming and you enjoyed your stay!
Guests love the feel of the home with it's turn of the century features that give it character. Restoring it back to its glory was a labor of love....We left as much of the charm of the 100 year old house as we could hence the beautiful hard wood floors slightly sloping and the lovely original stairs that open to a reading nook that looks over the harbor.
Many families with small children that have stayed with us over the past 13 years, have enjoyed the great mix of comfy modern furniture and antiques. We have never worried about the antiques, the antiques also, like the home, have stood the test of time and are a part of the history of the house and area...so no one should worry about them, we don't.
We are glad you mentioned the stairs it gives us the opportunity to talk about the project we have been working on throughout the summer in between guest stays...We are excited to say that we are restoring the remaining portion of the home which will include the addition of a bedroom with a King size bed as well as an extra set of standard stairs (which means guests will have the option of using the standard size stairs or the narrow stairs)...During this renovation all mattresses will be replaced and a bedroom will be add downstairs for the convenience of our guests who like being on the first floor....wow, busy year for us, but things are on track to be completed by May!
Thanks for staying with us Sarah
Quiet, peaceful getaway
Great views in a quiet fishing village. Felt like home. Walked to the harbor every morning to see the tides. Fresh lobster (and crabs) for dinner! Enjoyed using the deck and grill, and made smores one night at the firepit. Easy to get to Machias for the Blueberry Festival, as well as Campabello and the lighthouses. Great hiking nearby!!! The victorian house had a lot of character, but the stairs are steep and the sloping ceilings upstairs are low. We loved using the record player, with excellent albums to choose from. The 2 upstairs rocking chairs overlook the ocean, a nice space to sit. Overall a good amount of space, we didn't feel on top of each other. Owners very friendly and helpful. Thanks for a wonderful week, and we hope to return someday!
Kris and his delightful family were wonderful guests. Easy going and friendly, who enjoy new places and people..They left the place great....We enjoyed having them around and are very pleased they had a good vacation. Have a great fall!

Beautiful Views, Best Lobster in the World and Charming Cottage!!
The pictures don't do justice to this beautiful cottage or the spectacular view from the decks. It has everything you need with an old world charm. Its full of antiques, downeast hospitality and harbor views from almost every window.. Cutler is the quaintest fishing village you will find. The beautiful sunrises shine on the lobster boats leaving the harbor for work. Upon their return you can walk down to buy the freshest lobster you'll ever eat.
When we could tear ourselves from the deck and the view, we had plenty to do. We golfed at the local course, hiked the Bold Coast, went on a Pufffin Tour, and visited the beautiful coastal villages of Lubec (visit Monica's Chocolates!) and Eastport. We also drove to Campobello Island, Canada (30 minutes away) to visit FDRs summer home. Don't forget your passport. !
This was our 2nd visit and we booked ahead for next year.! We are at our most relaxed when we come to Cutler. We couldn't have had better hosts. They provided all the info we needed to have a wonderful time. You will NOT be disappointed!!!!
The cottage is very well situated for a true Maine experience on the bold coast. Cutler is a working fishing village. The views from the cottage overlook the cove where the boats are tendered. The house is well decorated, very clean and has all necessary amenities for a great time. Lots of nature to enjoy in the area with hikes along bold coast, trips to lighthouse, kayaking, trips to rocky and sandy beaches, etc. Wonderful getaway for a family or a couple. Owners are very helpful answering questions about the area. I would highly recommend the house for a fun, relaxing or adventurous vacation. Don't forget to ask the owners where to purchase lobster for the true Downeast meal! I will certainly return to the rental another year!
Beautiful Home In An Even Prettier Town
We've been to Bar Harbor, and other cities in Maine, but this is the place to stay if you want to get away from the tourist crowds, while still enjoying the beauty of Maine! Cutler is beautiful..it is so peaceful and endearing. It is almost out of a storybook. This cottage had so much character...the perfect place to enjoy Maine! We definitely recommend.
Our location lends itself to a variety of unique activities. Among them are whale watching and puffin tours. Other seasonal activities include lobster fishing adventures, hunting and snow shoeing. Some travelers enjoy experiencing our local festivals which include our famous Blueberry Festival and Birding Festival. Different seasons provide different opportunities from wreath making during the late fall months to amazing trails along the coast for hiking as well as trails along the riverside for ATVing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.
