Algiers Point getaway

  • 4 of 5

This property is a very nice getaway spot for enjoying the NOLA area, while having some very close peace and quiet when needed. Very convenient to $2 (each way)for short walk to pedestrian ferry ride, which seems to be consistently on time, clean, and efficient. Ferry drops you off in safe, well lit area of Quarter. Parking on street, but not a problem - always found spot almost in front of property.

Arrived at night and were a bit concerned about neighborhood (love NOLA, but could say the same about several other neighborhoods have stayed in). However, quiet and safe, with some very friendly, kind, and welcoming neighbors. Met several local residents while walking streets day and night for visits to local pubs and eateries. Nice park area very close. All we met were so friendly and welcoming to neighborhood. Lots of good pets and pet caretakers about. There was a small free library stand less than block from rental just off sidewalk. Nice touch. Had couple of locals advise about sketchier areas several blocks away, but no problems in this neighborhood. Very few pubs and eateries on AP in this area, but all were good, fun, clean, and run by and visited by nice people.

Rental itself was clean, peaceful, spacious for us (a couple), and had all necessary amenities. Owner very nice and responsive, and allowed late checkout due to no one coming in immediately behind us. (That was very nice!) Bed very comfortable.

Not great cell reception in parts of residence for some carriers (sometimes that was nice too). Would suggest a better lighted path to entry door (on side of residence down a narrow walkway), with maybe motion detector light or something. Small dog in another part of house (separate apartment) yapped a bit at times, but not a real problem (rare and brief).

Really enjoyed outside (private) enclosed area in back. Would/will definitely go back. Nice perspective on the City of New Orleans, pretty day and esp NIGHT views of city on riverwalk area near ferry.

Safe travels to all!

Perfect NOLA Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently spent 5 weeks in Dina's lovely hideaway. What can I say - this was our third stay! However, this was the first of such a long duration. This place is EXACTLY as advertised. Algier's Point is the jew of New Orleans - and we have stayed in other parts of the city (The Bywater and Metairie). The neighborhood is safe and the locals are friendly. Three great bars - three great food places - and your only 15 minutes away max by ferry from the magic and the madness that is the Quarter. There is just no better deal around. The best way I can put it is that we plan our intended visits to New Orleans based on the availability of this property. Thanks again for everything, Dina!

Awesome apartment

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. The apartment was perfect. It was clean and well stocked. It was very homey feeling. The neighborhood was lovely, and the people are very friendly.

Dina was very helpful, and immediately answered any questions we had. I would recommend staying here to everyone I know.

It was a short walk to the ferry, and a short ride to Canal Street. Great stay all around.

Perfect for military PCS

  • 5 of 5

I was in a tight spot in which my permanent residence wasn't ready upon my transfer from New Orleans and needed a place for an undetermined amount of time and had zero household goods to work with (they were packed up). I was very fortunate to find this place and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect solution to my dilemma. This place couldn't have been in a more perfect.

1. The location: cool bars, restaurants, and a walking ferry to the French Quarter all within .25 mi from the door.

2. All the comforts of home. A huge comfy bed, linens, towels, kitchen utensils, appliances, washer and dryer, satellite TV, cleaning supplies, even a closet for "I forgot at home" toiletries". There's a cute little back patio for chill nights at home (just double up on the mosquito repellent). In addition to the one bed, it offers a pull out couch and two cots. Perfect for those splitting the bill. Ok, the only (and I really do mean only) downside is if you plan on sticking the kitchen and saving on your food budget and you don't have a vehicle, you're going to need to Lift or Uber to the closest grocery store.

After staying here my only question is why would anyone want to stay at a hotel when visiting New Orleans???

Truly Delightful!

  • 5 of 5

Mid-March through Mid-May, 2016, we lived in Dina's "Cute Hideaway" in Algiers Point -- and we loved it. We have 3 little dogs and made some special arrangements with Dina for their accommodation, but once we were settled in, had zero issues related to the pups. In fact, the neighbors took a shine to our dogs and liked to visit with us, (er...with the dogs!) for a while when they brought over our mail. We enjoyed getting to know both Holly and Jason.

Algiers Point has got to be one of the quietest neighborhoods we have ever lived in. Besides the birds (which apparently sing around the clock) the most noise we heard was from the calliope on the Natchez steamboat, which moors directly across the Mississippi from Algiers. The ferry is within easy walking distance (about 2.5 blocks), runs on the hour from Algiers, and the quarter hour from the foot of Canal. It's two dollars each way which is a very small price to pay for essentially door to door transportation from the "Hideaway" to the French Quarter. We had our car with us as well, and so were able to drive whenever we wanted -- but keep in mind the rush hour traffic over the Mississippi bridge will set you back at least 30 minutes, so plan accordingly.

During our stay the weather fluctuated from nippy -- in the 40's, to balmy/humid -- in the 80's, and we were truly delighted to have the central heating/cooling system keeping us comfortable. That's the sort of thing you take for granted, but believe me, having relied on, let's just say -- less than central HVAC in the past -- Dina's central HVAC rocks.

We highly recommend Dina's "Hideaway." The neighborhood is safe, and quiet. It's really easy to take the ferry across to the Aquarium, River Walk, Quarter, and the foot of Canal. The neighbors are friendly. The HVAC works! And, Dina is responsive, generous, and flexible about "special needs." Stay here, you won't be sorry.

A great place from which to explore NOLA

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I are in our 60s and spend several months a year travelling. This is precisely the type of place we like to stay when we are trying to get a feel for what it might be like to live in an area. The home is exactly as shown in the photos and described by other reviewers. It is a cozy older house in a quiet, safe neighborhood. It was clean, and furnished with a comfortable bed and linens. The kitchen was well equipped for preparing our own meals.

Dina was a treat to deal with. Her communications were prompt and clear and she provided a helpful information package with guidelines on using the property and tips on transportation and services in the neighborhood.

There does not seem to be a place to purchase more than basic groceries in the immediate vicinity. The Algiers Point Market, a couple of blocks away, has the bare essentials: milk, bread, eggs, cereal and some dry goods. We found Rouses Market in the French Quarter was the most convenient location for fresh produce, meat and a more extensive inventory of groceries.

The Algiers Point ferry is a convenient and relaxing way to get across the river to the French Quarter. The terminal is a 5 minute walk from the house and the ferry departs every 30 minutes. You disembark at Canal St from where you can walk to the Quarter or hop on a streetcar. We bought 5 day ferry passes for $18 by downloading the RTA gomobile app on our phones ( These offered unlimited travel on the ferry, streetcars and buses with the added convenience of not having to worry about maintaining a stockpile of $1 bills for the $2 exact change fare.

We had no difficulty filling a week with interesting things to see and do in NOLA and Dina's house provided an ideal base from which to explore the city and area. We took a walking tour of the Garden District to see the fascinating Lafayette cemetery and several beautiful old southern mansions. We visited a couple of plantation homes along the banks of the Mississippi...there are several within a 60 to 90-minute drive.

The National WWII museum is spectacular. We spent half a day there, which wasn’t sufficient to do it justice.

The Presbytere museum on Jackson Square had an interesting exhibit on Hurricane Katrina.

A class at the New Orleans School of Cooking was great fun. An entertaining chef explained the history of the area and its influences on Louisiana cuisine. At the end of the class you get to enjoy a meal of N'awlins cookin' with some local beer.
