'Tis a Gift to Be Simple...

  • 5 of 5

We shared a peaceful week at the Grafton Schoolhouse, watching the colors change and listening to the leaves fall. No TV meant no debate-watching, TG, and we had a lovely time reading, taking day trips, and enjoying autumn in beautiful southern Vermont and New Hampshire. Katharine has thought of everything. The house is truly charming, the kitchen well-equipped, and our Coton de Tulear felt as "at home" as we did.The owner and caretaker both promptly reached out to help us when I foolishly locked the key in the house, and the people we met on our travels were equally warm and welcoming. Grafton itself is a delightful town, replete with a central Village Market (selling delicious Grafton Cheese, select local crafts, food and wine), a gracious hotel and the Phelps Barn Pub, where we had two cozy dinners. We also enjoyed the fine art in Gallery North Star's sophisticated space, watching cheese being made at Grafton Cheese on the outskirts of town, and meeting the proprietor at Plummer's Sugar House -- where we bought delicious maple syrup at the best price around. Katharine's schoolhouse/cottage was the perfect jumping-off point for a variety of visits to nearby towns, from Chester (Stonehouse Antiques, Davallia Art at both of its locations, Sage Jewelry & Gifts and the Moon Dog Cafe on the Common, plus The Country Girl Diner and MacLaomainn's Scottish Pub) to Brattleboro (Twice Upon a Time Collectibles and the fantastic Brattleboro Food Co-Op). Unfortunately, Weston Priory was closed for a monastic retreat, but we did manage to visit the well-known Vermont Country Store in Weston, as well as "Hildene," Robert Lincoln's family homestead in Manchester, VT. We discovered a Marimekko Store in Manchester, as well -- Marimekko is coming back; hurrah! En route "home" to Massachusetts, we enjoyed our drive through southern New Hampshire, as well: from Walpole (Alyson's Orchard and Burdick's Chocolates, of course) to Peterboro (Twin Elm Farm Antiques, Harlow's Pub and the Peterboro Diner) to Harrisville (Looms and Country Store). Words to the wise: watch your cell phone for roaming charges, and do not plan to rely on your Mapquest, Google Maps or GPS directions. Rural VT and NH are stunning over-the-river-and-through-the-woods territory, and that was part of the fun for us!

Awesome- Vermont charm!

  • 5 of 5

This place was great! We booked a last minute road trip and wanted to avoid chain hotels if possible. We found this VRBO that allowed 1 night stays (most have a 2 night minimum) and it looked decent. The pictures are a good representation of the place. It's not perfect, but we didn't want perfect. We wanted a secluded, charming, rustic, house that felt like Vermont.. this was it! Highly recommended.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep...

  • 5 of 5

A very charming property in the woods between Grafton and Chester, this home was originally a tiny New England schoolhouse! The small house has a sweet energy and is conveniently located alongside a quiet, and seldom travelled Vermont country road on the very corner of its wooded acreage. There is a wonderful kitchen; open living/dining; small downstairs bedroom and a large upstairs bedroom area. The bathroom has a jacuzzi tub, though we didn't use it. Ceilings are surprisingly high and the space is bright and airy. The renovation was smart and well thought out, and the interior is nicely appointed with the needed basics. Best features are the working cast iron wood stove; the outside deck; and the exposed raw birch rafters on the second floor.

Charming!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here! It is a perfect set-up staying with our grandchildren as there is lots of room for sleeping & play. There are plenty of games and books included for all ages. We used the croquet set, hammock and grill outdoors. The house is charming and inviting, I would definitely stay here again! Actually, I want to LIVE there! The host is very accommodating -- we had to contact her with a question and she was very congenial and helpful. There is one bathroom but the 6 of us had no issues taking turns.

Good get away

  • 4 of 5

The rental was clean and in good shape. The wifi did not work but most of our group was happy to disconnect for a day.

The description states the property is on 22 acres. We did not get to utilize the land as it was hard to identify where trails may have been.
