UPDATE: 7/22/11........ Sandpoint, Idaho voted 'Most Beautiful Small Town' in the best of the road contest, sponsered by Rand McNally in colaboration with USA TODAY !

Are you looking for a recently built, larger waterfront home in the Sandpoint, Idaho area? One that is decorated in a Northwest outdoorsman lodge style? A home that has a grass lawn that leads to a sandy swimming area, and its own 700 sq. ft. dock? Look no further, you just found it.

Our home is located on the South side of the Pend Oreille River, upstream of the Albany Falls dam, thereby connecting it with Lake Pend Oreille. Although the area is known as the Pend Oreille 'River', to be clear, the water is actually a part of the lake. We are approx. 20 minutes downstream [west] of “the Long Bridge”. Our home is in an area of newer, executive level homes.

This two story, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms home was completed in 2005. Our home is decorated through out with rustic, lodge style hunting and fishing themed decor. The main floor centers around a warm and inviting living area, featuring an expansive vaulted ceiling, and anchored by a massive river rock fireplace with a huge custom log mantle. This area is decorated with the outdoorsman in mind, displaying several pieces of taxidermy. Deer, antelope, black bear, and waterfowl are tastefully displayed in a manner that compliments the décor of the living room.

The adjoining kitchen/dining area is spacious and well stocked with all the tools you’ll need to prepare any meal. The kitchen also features a wet bar area, and adjacent to the kitchen is a separate laundry room, with full sized appliances. Our guests will also find a powder room in the main entry hall on this level. Also on the main level, is the Master bedroom suite with its beautiful handmade, king size log bed, master bathroom, walk-in closet, and water view slider to a private outdoor/deck sitting area. The wrap around deck provides beautiful views of the water while you enjoy a meal, watch the sunset, or relax with a good book. Upstairs, you’ll find two more large bedrooms, one with another king size bed, and the second with both a full size bed and a twin bed. The second floor has its own bathroom. Our home also has a daylight, walk-out lower level. This level is only partially finished, and is the location of the fourth bedroom and its adjoining bathroom. This bedroom has two twin beds. We believe our home can best accommodate 4 adults and 4/5 children, however you could sleep two more adults in the bedroom with the full and twin, giving you accommodations for 6 adults / 2 children.

Outside you will find a large landscaped yard that leads to a lawn covered swimming beach. The smaller children will enjoy the safety of a sandy, and protected swimming area adjacent to the dock. The larger swimming area has a clean sand and small pebble bottom Older children and young adults will enjoy swimming and sunning on the 700 sq. ft. dock [brand new in 2014]. You are welcome to bring your boat, use the dock boat slip, and enjoy waterskiing, wakeboarding, or inner tubing. Experienced water sports enthusiasts agree, that our protected [and warmer] water is preferable to the main lake. Perhaps treat the family to a sunset boat cruise, and discover one of the available waterfront dining establishments within easy reach. Fisherman can cast a line from the dock, or use a small boat to fish for bass, perch, and trout. A twenty to thirty minute power boat ride will have you moored at the public boat dock in Sandpoint. Nature lovers / paddle sports people will enjoy exploring the undeveloped shoreline on the state conservation land adjacent to the Reilly Creek and Willow Bay areas, just a 10 minute paddle away. Just a few minutes away, the Willow Bay Marina, sells boat gas, which is a great conveinence. They are also the closest boat launch, however they do charge a small fee. There are two public boat launches in the area, the better one of the two is approx. 15 minutes away.

Nearby Sandpoint is well known for its resort attractions. Both fine and causal dining are available. Walk through town and discover the galleries of local artists, shopping at lots of small shops, or the city beach. Art, crafts and music festivals occur during the spring and summer months, with “The Festival at Sandpoint” being the most well known. Lake Pend Oreille itself is the largest and deepest lake in North Idaho. Boaters can spend days exploring the over 100 miles of shoreline. Close by to Sandpoint you can find the Idaho Club, featuring a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Thirty minutes away Silverwood Theme Park boasts the Northwest’s best wooden roller coaster. During the winter months Schweitzer Mountain Resort offers world class skiing on 2300+ acres, and ski lift rides to access mountain biking, huckleberry patches and live music in the summertime. Come and enjoy all that beautiful, magnificent North Idaho provides.

No weddings, parties, or hosted events. Our home is limited to 9 guests, unless you have been given prior permission by the owners.

NOTE TO OTHER VRBO HOME OWNERS; WE MIGHT POSSIBLY BE INTERESTED IN AN 'HOME EXCHANGE' WITH YOU. WE ARE SPECIFICALLY INTERESTED IN HAWAII, OR THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS, WA.

About The Owner

We have two grown children, and welcomed our first grandchild in 2014. Our kids grew up spending the summers here, as we look back now, we realize how much this place has meant to us. Now with our grandchild, we look forward to sharing family time even more. We built this home ourselves, and we love our time at the lake cabin.

The Owner purchased this house in 1995

Why The Owner chose Idaho

After years of looking for waterfront property, we choose Sandpoint because it truly is a 4 season location. Wonderful summers, beautiful fall weather, skiing in the winter, and we have the whole place to ourselves in the spring! We enjoy going to the lake to relax, and if we want to 'play tourist', Sandpoint is a perfect little town, great restaurants, and activities only a few minutes away. Sandpoint and Lake Pend Orielle are very special places.

What makes this house unique

We believe you will find our home to be unique in that, it's not 'just a rental'. When we built and decorated our home, we were not thinking 'rental'. We have not taken old, worn stuff from our primary home, and filled the cabin with it. All of the furnishings were bought new. We decorated like we live there. Several people have told us, that the kitchen supplies 'are the best, most complete', of any rental they have ever experienced.

In 2014 we built a brand new 700sq. dock with TREX decking, and it has become a wonderful addition to the swimming / beach area.

Beautiful site

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at this large, rustic style, but modern home in a beautiful location. The house was comfy. The rooms are spread out over the house so that there is plenty of privacy for members of the group. Each bath is equipped with everything you need and the kitchen had all of the dishes, utensils, and cookware necessary for meals.

We especially enjoyed the large decks that overlook the lake. The view was amazing, but our group spent most of our time IN the water. We were there during a heat spell, which made it easy to get in!

Back to the decks: We served meals there, but also enjoyed it for reading, watching the stars at night, and watching our group playing in the water by day. There is also a yard below the deck to put the lounge chairs on and stretch out. Beyond that is a small beach area & large boat ramp. So there are plenty of areas for conversations and relaxing.

The swimming area was perfect for our kids. The river may as well be a lake with the advantage of not being so huge that you couldn't paddle board to the other side. The water in this location is very smooth and calm, which made it easy for everything - kayaking, water skiing, etc. Another thing about this spot - there is plenty of privacy. There are neighbors, but they are far enough away so that you feel like you are in your own space, yet near enough to exchange friendly greetings from time to time. The whole area is definitely out in the country.

Richard is a great host. He is just a phone call away if anything should come up. He even arranged to have a Pack N Play for the baby! What a nice guy. I would love to come back to this lovely retreat, where we created great memories.

Great Vacation, house needs some updates

  • 3 of 5

We had a fantastic vacation, and appreciated the lovely and fun décor of the house. The decks were large and inviting and we were thrilled that there were absolutely no mosquitoes, so were able to take advantage of the decks in the evenings. The dock was great and we took advantage of it to its fullest potential as we rented ski boats and a pontoon boat 4 of the 7 days, as well as jet skis, paddle boards and kayaks.

A couple of things, however, that the owners need to consider: The beds were extremely hard and uncomfortable. ( although, I did not hear a complaint about the basement twin beds). We actually went back to Coeur d'Alene/Walmart and bought memory foam toppers for the 2 king beds. However, we were grateful for the bedroom fans, as we were there on a very hot week.

The other issue was the refrigerator. It was an old and smaller sized, side-by-side. We had 9 people for 7 days there, and since we are way out in the country, ate all but 2 meals there. We had a hard time keeping all of our food cold, and it was kind of a mess to even find what you were looking for. We had to buy ice at the marina and use our coolers to help keep all our food cold.

We would like to come back here next year, but these issues were important enough to us to need some improvement before we were to come back.

Owner's Response: First of all, please be aware that reviews #19 and #20 were written by members of the same group, so some folks in that group were quite pleased with their experience. Not sure how a 22 cu. ft side by side can be consider small? There is a large grocery store 15 minutes away, so perhaps some planning and another trip into town would solve the issue? Regarding the bed comments; please look closely at reviews #5 , #7 , #10 , #13, and #14. Out of my 20 current reviews, 5 of them found the beds to be so comfortable that they actually commented on them in their review - comments like "the beds were unbelievably comfortable, which made it hard to get up in the morning!" and " reports from the bedrooms were that the beds were very comfortable with high quality sheets and blankets". Sorry to hear this guest was unhappy, but I'm voting with the majority on this one, and filing this under " you just can't keep everybody happy, no matter how hard you try......"

We spent a wonderful week at this cabin. There was plenty of room for 2 families of four and lots of extras included. Great dock to spend hot days! Would love to see a hot tub added for cool nights. Can't wait until next year to return!

Beautiful Sandpoint

  • 5 of 5

Thank you! Our family had a wonderful time in Sandpoint! The home was very clean, fully stocked and perfectly decorated. There is plenty of space; bedrooms and bathrooms are large and fully stocked with towels and other necessities. The kitchen had plenty cutlery, dishes and small appliances. The layout of the home was really nice for small kids - nowhere to get into any real trouble. Also, there was a gate at the top of the stairs on the deck, safe for the kids. We enjoyed the lake very much, fished everyday. The owners were very responsive and easy to deal with. Overall, a wonderful experience, great location, beautiful scenery and very comfortable house.

Watersports Heaven

  • 5 of 5

Great location on the Pend Oreille River making for perfect water-ski and other boating activities. Cabin is very well equipped with everything someone would want in a home away from home. Lot allows for activities on the lawn as well - kids enjoyed badminton and playing games off small beach area. Two bedrooms with King size beds made it easy for two families to share the cabin. Dock large enough to allow two boats to be moored - a huge benefit for the water sports minded. Even when daytime temp hit high 90's the cabin cooled off at night for comfortable sleep. Overall an excellent experience!
