Welcome to Maggie's Cottage at Brown's Mountain. This is a completely renovated 2 bedroom, 2 full bath cottage that is surrounded by 215 acres of pure country. Once you enter the gate, you will drive over 1 mile to get to the cottage. Views of Old Rag from the front field are spectacular. The stocked 3 acre pond comes complete with a small row boat, so try your luck and fish for blue gills and large mouth bass (catch and release). Fishing rods are available for your use. You will pass hiking trails and steams before spying the cottage, nestled in a clearing in the woods. It is cozy, clean and charming. The master bedroom and bathroom is upstairs, along with a washer and dryer. On the main floor you'll find the second bedroom with 2 single beds and another full bath. The family room has comfy seating to watch DVD's on the flatscreen TV. We do not get any channels on the TV. The adjacent kitchen is brand new, with bar seating for 4. A wrap around open deck and a fire pit in the front yard completes the cottage.
Explore all 215 acres. Hike to the 1/2 mile stretch of the Hughes River to fish for rainbow trout. Bring your mountain bikes and explore our trails or just sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery and numerous wildlife. At night, sit on the front porch or at the fire pit and marvel at the stars.
We're located just off Virginia's Route 231, one of America's ten most outstanding scenic byways, and back up to Shenandoah National Park. For hikers, Old Rag trail head parking lot is just 2 miles away. White Oak Canyon trailhead is just 15 minutes by car.
Ready to do something more?. Wine tasking is just minutes away at Sharp Rock Vineyard. Great restaurants, shopping and antiquing can be found in Sperryville, Va., a quick 15 minute drive. Or head to Madison, VA (20 minutes south) , and check out the many outstanding wineries, cheese factories, historic sites, civil war battlefield, nearby shopping and restaurant there.
Only one hour away is Luray caverns, historic Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
As you can tell, there is much do to with LOTS of privacy at Maggie's Cottage.
We hope you will enjoy this beautiful part of Virginia as much as we do.

My Granny, born Maggie Brown in 1906, grew up in the country. She loved the wide open spaces, wild flowers, and nature.
She would have loved this beautiful cottage in the countryside, hence the name. We hope you enjoy it, too.
Vicki Healy purchased this cottage in 2007
Great location for traveling to Old Rag. Secluded, and overall clean property. The home was completely renovated in 2010 and nicely appointed. Well stocked with basic necessities and full size appliances. We appreciated the ice maker and fire wood however there wasn't enough for more than 1 fire. The bed sheets did not appear clean with various hairs, but bathrooms were extremely clean! Upstairs bed is very uncomfotable and needs replaced. What would make this cottage even more comfortable would be a new bed and a small sectional downstairs for 2+ people to stretch out on. T.V. and DVD player were nice but we couldn't get the antennae to work after multiple attempts to get the local news/weather and a radio would be helpful. The pond was large and we saw fish jumping, a bald eagle and a heron. Could not find the trails on the property. Enjoyed the ride to Sperryville and a nice dinner at Thornton River Grille. They have a gourmet grocery store attached to the restaurant too with everything you'll need. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our time at Maggie's Cottage. Great mix of relaxation and adventure
Maggie's Cottage is probably the cleanest VRBO/rental home I've ever stayed in. Extremely well maintained and very well stocked. We were just there for one night with one other couple for a wedding, so we didn't get to enjoy all of the amenities, but it worked OK for us. The downsides are: it is very out of the way. This may be an upside for some people, but for us - driving down a one mile gravel road every time we needed to get to the wedding site over two days was a bit much. It also would have helped to have had some sort of wifi since we had NO cell service at the cottage. Again, some people may consider this an upside, but we needed directions and communication for the wedding, so it was a bit tough. The other downside: the water was very, very smelly. I'm assuming it's well water and it's extremely sulfuric. The sulfur smell was so strong, that the other couple wouldn't even shower there the next morning, and it made me rush through my shower in a few minutes. I don't think I saw other people complaining about this in the reviews, so maybe it was a fluke the weekend we stayed there, but I would recommend some sort of water filtration system be put on the house to avoid that in the future. We grew up on and currently live on well water, so I'm aware of the kinds of smells and tastes it can have, which is why we have a saline filtration system on our home! Otherwise, though, a very nice place for an out-of-the-way stay - especially if you want to be off the grid!
My husband and I decided last minute that we wanted to get away for the weekend to unplug and unwind with our two boys (2 and 3.5 years old). Our time at Maggie's Cottage was exactly what we needed. We only ended up staying for one night but because check in was early and check out was late afternoon the next day, we had plenty of time to enjoy the cottage, explore the property, go fishing at the pond, and hike at white oak canyon during our stay. The cottage was clean, comfortable, and pretty much had everything we could possibly need. Our boys really had fun fishing at the pond and sitting by the fire to make s'mores. My husband and I really just enjoyed being surrounded by nature. It was very relaxing. We will definitely be coming back to Maggie's Cottage again, but next time we will stay much longer!
Our stay at Maggie's Cottage was GREAT! There is so much to do on the property and within a short distance, we wished we could have stayed a few more days to explore. The cottage itself was perfect - clean, updated, bright, comfortable, and relaxing. The surrounding acres were beautiful and perfect for outdoor activities. We enjoyed paddling around the pond in the boat and everyone caught at least one fish! The location is perfect for a short drive to the Old Rag parking lot. We also really loved exploring the town of Sperryville. So many unique shops, restaurants, and even a cool brewery and distillery. This place really is a gem and we are thankful to have had the opportunity to stay!
We loved it! Beautiful place to get away! We brought out bikes and rode around the property a bit and to the vineyard right down the road for some wine. Right by Old Rag/other great hikes. Was lovely and would absolutely do it again!!
If what you are looking for is a remote (mile long farm road dirt driveway) totally private house for a get away from it all this is your place. Great place to launch hikes and to see wildlife. We saw bears, deer, fox, rabbits, hawks, etc. The air conditioning works great and the kitchen is fully equipped. There are also multiple wineries in the area. Sharp Rock actually has some very good wine.
Groceries and drinks should be purchased in advance sufficient to last your stay because it is a long drive to Madison for the nearest large grocery store and liquor store. If you intend to drink alcohol, you need to bring it with you as well.
Sperryville had a pizza place (very good), a restaurant next door (adequate) and a bakery down the street for coffee and baked goods in the morning. TV channels non-existent as well as cell. No cell service for miles so if you want to really be out of reach you will be. DVD player works fine. You should, however bring your own movies for a rainy day.
Owner was very nice and responsive, as well as the care taker who lives near by.
