Overview

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)

This is an authentic miner's log cabin built in the 1890s. Very few of these log homes are still standing.

We invite you to experience this little gem set on the edge of preserved land right in Colorado Springs. Outside the front door of the cabin is an unobstructed view of the mountains and forest in the canyon.

Welcome to our mountain getaway retreat in the city, in beautiful, safe Bear Creek Canyon. Minutes on side streets from Downtown, Old Colorado City, and Manitou Springs. No one seems to believe me when I say how near we are to everything you'd want to do in the Springs, yet you feel like you are deep in the Colorado country! The cabin is at the very end of Bear Creek Place, in a very quiet area, on a dead end road, and has only 4 houses nearby. There are no streetlights on Bear Creek Place, so it is totally dark at night, perfect for stargazing.

This cozy, light, bright, romantic, fully renovated 900 square foot cabin borders miles of parks and open spaces. It has wonderful character and some of the original features have been preserved such as the stone fire place and some exposed log walls. There is no carpeting, only gorgeous newer Austrian Pine floors throughout. There are vaulted ceilings and a fully updated modern kitchen and bathroom. The cabin is stocked with many extra amenities such as paper towels, laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent, shampoo, conditioner, napkins, spices and plastic bags! The bathroom has heated tile floors and a travertine marble tub/shower enclosure. There are air-conditioners in both the living room and the bedroom (which cool the whole cabin), and the cabin is very well insulated, so it cools down beautifully at night if you prefer to leave the windows open. In the daytime, simply close the windows and the cabin stays pretty cool. There are also skylights in the living room so it is very light and cheery!

The bedroom has a queen sized tempur-pedic mattress on the bed and is extremely comfortable. There is a pullout queen size sofa bed in the living room with a comfortable memory foam matress, so the cabin can accomodate up to four people in those two beds. There is also a twin bed in a small alcove off the bedroom. It has curtains that can be closed to separate it from the bedroom and can sleep one more person, but access is through the bedroom. Note: The bedroom walls do not extend all the way up to the cabin's cathedralled ceiling, so the bedroom is private, but not sound-proof. (I hope that makes sense)...

The cabin is furnished with a mix of contemporary pieces and wonderful antiques. There are even antique toys (have fun with them!)... There are two televisions, a 40' Flat Screen TV in the bedroom with a DVD player and a 22' flat-screen TV in the living room. Both TVs have full cable TV service. The cabin is also set up for wireless internet access so you can sit outside on the patio and surf the web...

The back yard is totally fenced with outdoor furniture and a barbecue grill for al fresco dining. Or you can sit at the outdoor table in the front of the house and gaze upon the canyon.

Located in spectacular Bear Creek Canyon, (one of two canyons in Colorado Springs), the cabin is steps from a lovely creek, wonderful hiking, picnicking by the creek, wildlife viewing, biking and exploring, yet it is less than five minutes from the nearest Wal-Mart, historic Old Colorado City and 10 minutes from exciting Manitou Springs with their wonderful restaurants, shopping, supermarkets and galleries. Garden of the Gods park, with its exquisite red rock formations, is a must see and it is less than 10 minutes away with a fantastic visitor's center. Downtown Colorado Springs is just a hop, skip and jump away, as well... The Air Force Academy is about 25 minutes north of us, and Colorado College is about 10 minutes away in the downtown area. The Olympic Training Center is east of the cabin and less than a fifteen minute drive.

Bear Creek Nature Center is right down the road, a wonderful place to take the kids! There is also a beautiful mountain zoo less than 15 minutes away near the historic Broadmoor hotel (a great place to go for a drink or a meal or just to walk around the gorgeous lake). The drive up Pikes Peak is also a great day trip, and the road to the top starts about 10 minutes from the cabin. Also in Manitou Springs is the Cave of the Winds, and the Cliff-dwelling museum, both great day trips with kids.

The cabin has limited parking so two cars maximum, please. Access is either by a relatively short ride on a dirt road or up a short paved road. Getting into the parking area in front of the cabin can be a bit of a maneuver, so you have to be careful when pulling up...

We allow pets, but if you are going to be leaving your dog in the cabin while you are out, we ask that the dog be contained in a pet kennel if it is a chewer or a pee-er... So, please let us know if for some reason you need a kennel during your stay and we will try to accomodate your pooch.

Cancellation Policy: 100% refund if cancellation is 60 days or more before arrival date. Cancelling 30-60 days before arrival date will result in forfeit of deposit. Cancelling within 30 days of arrival date is non-refundable unless we are able to re-book those days. There is a $50.00 processing fee for any cancellations.

Another note: Cell phone reception can be somewhat iffy... Texting always works. Sprint (which I have) works but you may have to move around to find a good reception location. Verizon seems to work better than Sprint.

About Mark Lowenherz

Pardon the corny photo from X-Mas at our daughter's house... We have 3 Corgi dogs of our own, all rescued from the Humane Society, and our daughter has a 4th Corgi, also a rescue... We take our 3 pups with us whenever we can, and they love taking long hikes with us around the Bear Creek Canyon area. We have been married for close to 30 years. We lived in New York City for our first 35+ years, and have lived in Colorado for the past 17 years. We love it here! (You will too!)

Mark Lowenherz purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Mark Lowenherz chose Colorado Springs

We purchased this wonderful property as a country getaway right in the city. We had fallen in love with Bear Creek Canyon park and Section 16 hiking trails and when this unique property came up for sale, we couldn't resist! It's only 10 minutes from our home in Colorado Springs, yet feels like it is a whole different world.

What makes this cabin unique

This canyon is surrounded by open spaces and there are only 22 houses in the entire canyon so it is a very quiet area. We have 3 Corgi dogs (all rescue dogs, adopted at the Colorado Springs Humane Society), and we take them hiking up into the surrounding parks and mountains. We love the proximity to all that Colorado Springs, Old Colorado City and Manitou have to offer, yet feel as though we are living in a mountain chalet, miles from civilization!

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I added an addition onto our house, We needed a place to stay for 4 months. We stayed at the 1890s Miner's cabin in Bear Creek canyon. The beauty of the cabin is that it is minutes away from everything yet worlds apart. We loved staying there. It is really a country experience in the city. It is quiet, safe, and charming.

I highly recommend this cabin as a vacation rental to anyone who wants to have it all.

The house was well maintained comparing its age (which is very old)

  • 3 of 5

We are generally ok with our stay. Actually house is exactly as you see in pictures so we found what we excepted but honestly it was expensive comparing other alternatives. Our biggest issue was driveway (or the road) coming to house was in very very bad shape. We were lucky since we rented a truck without knowing this situation. If we had a small car there was no way to drive without hitting the bottom of the car. There is only one way to park in front of garage and you have to drive back and front toward the side road and turn from neighbor's drive way. We really scared to drive back and forth especially at night.

We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was beautiful. It was not too far from everything and also secluded, so we felt like we had some privacy. Loved the trails in Bear Creek Canyon that are right there!

Great little cabin, had everything we needed.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed this cabin, it had plenty of room for a family of four and updated amenities and seemed close to everything we did. The parking was a little hard with a larger SUV but overall we would definitely stay there again.

Nice and comforting

  • 4 of 5

Loved the heated floors in the bathroom. Rained pretty much the whole time so we didn't get to enjoy the patio. Road was crazy getting in and out and with all the rain, we got a leak. All in all we had a great stay!

Thoroughly enjoyed this charming place

  • 4 of 5

Overall an excellent choice for lodging in the Colorado Springs area. We were very happy with our experience. It felt secluded but was near so many activities. Mark gave perfect detailed directions to locate the property. If the photos appeal to you as they did us, you will find this place charming and a great alternative to a hotel stay. The only thing I would suggest is porch lights. There are lights near the entry/mud room but we couldn't locate any other porch lights in the front or back to light the seating areas, which made it a tad creepy when trying to smoke on the porch at night. But other than that, I would certainly recommend this place.
