Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Jake's Place is a three bedroom, 2 bath artist's cottage deep in the heart of Grayton Beach, Florida. This charming beach cottage, completely renovated in 2015, sleeps up to 8 comfortably (depending on combination of adults and children). Jake's Place has three bedrooms, with two queen beds, 2 twin beds (bunks), and a queen sofa sleeper. This cozy and bright beach cottage, filled with local and folk art, sits under 130 year old live oak trees, offering a fenced in back yard, a private swimming pool and outdoor shower. Beginning March 1 each year, until mid-May, and again in early fall (until mid to late October) the pool is heated for you.

The screened-in porch and back yard off the kitchen is a great place for outdoor cookouts and after the beach dinners (grill out on the park-style charcoal grill out back) or night-time games. Relax by the tropically landscaped, private swimming pool while watching some rays, or after dark, with the pool softly lit, it's just magical by the palms and under the live oaks. The pool is perfect after a full day at the beach -- cool off the sunburn before heading back to the beach for sunset; at Grayton, you don't miss sunset. Really, don't miss it.

There's a great covered porch on the front for people watching; watch everyone headed to the beach and the Red Bar; extra points for counting Harley riders! Wireless internet service, lots of great cable channels, and three TVs; in the living room and two of the bedrooms. Parking -- can accommodate 3 cars, or a car and boat and trailer. Umbrellas and chairs are provided, and assorted beach stuff too. We can also recommend beach chair/umbrella and bike rental companies. There are miles and miles of easy (asphalt) bike trails out of Grayton for you to enjoy.

The beach distance is about 200 yards from the front door, with public boardwalk access right there on the east and west sides of The Red Bar. There's places to put in kayaks and canoes, which can be rented close by. There are at least a couple of beach umbrella/chair rental places in Grayton that you walk right by; check them out your first day and don't worry about carrying anything but your towel and cooler to the beach! YOLO boarding is abundant here. Jake's is a 2-3 minute walk to the beach, or shopping at the shops of Grayton Beach, or Grayton Beach General Store and several restaurants. Mapquest 374 Defuniak Street, Santa Rosa Beach. thanks and if this isn't the place for you, you know someone who will love Jakes, so please pass the word along, and in the meantime, be young, be foolish, and be happy!

Come to Grayton Beach Jake's. Come once, and you'll come back year after year. Lots of friends do.

About gail

When I bought Jake's in 2000, I was expecting my first child, a son, who has grown up to love Grayton. I had property in Seagrove Beach, just down the road, for about 10 years before that. But I knew my heart was in Grayton, so when I had the chance to buy a cottage, painted bright green (inside too; see if you can find any green paint), and sorely in need of TLC, I jumped at the chance. A LOT of hard work, elbow grease (big thanks to my Dad), and 17 years, two hurricanes and an oil spill later, we know that we're less a part of Grayton than Grayton is a part of us. so, when you walk through the pine and live oak covered, oyster-shelled streets of Old Grayton Beach, you get the feeling that things don't change very fast here. Which is exactly the way I wanted to raise my son. When you're on the beach here at sunset, well, it's simply timeless.

Why gail chose Grayton Beach

Why did I buy Jakes 17 years ago? More importantly, why would you want to stay here? Well, the cottage is a perfect size for families with small children, couples (even two or three couples), families who love to relax around a beautifully landscaped pool of their own, folks who want to be able to just walk to the beach without worrying about crossing busy roads or walk to the Red Bar for a night cap. There's plenty of parking for you to bring your boat if you're inclined. It's perfect for anybody who loves hanging out on a screened porch at night talking and playing games, cooking fabulous meals with a fully stocked chef's kitchen, or rocking on the front porch to people watch and visit with the lovely, if a bit eccentric, locals and infamous Grayton Beach "nice dogs". Come on now... you know you want to stay here... there's a reason about half our guests in 2017 were repeat guests....

What makes this house unique

Located about halfway between Destin and Panama City Beach, Florida, Grayton Beach is a small, historic beach village on Scenic Highway 30-A along the Florida Panhandle Gulf coast. Grayton Beach is a spectacularly wide beach, with a beautifully rugged dune system, sugary white sand, and bordered by a freshwater lake. One of the 'Beaches of South Walton' County, Florida, Grayton boasts a rich history, one of the oldest beach villages in Florida with a celebration of its 128th anniversary on July 4th, 2018. Many of the homes in Grayton date to the turn of the LAST century. Grayton is home to a curious mix of old-timers and newcomers, nice dogs, and the infamous Red Bar (and assorted, infamous locals). And Jake's, the little lavender painted cottage, lies at its heart.

Notes:
Two to three minute walk to Grayton Beach 'downtown' Grayton and the Red Bar and Shorty's; huge pool area to lounge; pool heated during certain periods; large screened porch off kitchen; park style charcoal grill; outdoor shower, covered front porch for people watching in Grayton; umbrella, umbrella sandscrew, and pool floats for your use. Please note: although we list a max of 8 people for the house, because of the size of the house, it is just not suitable for 8 full size adults. Six adults max, with two children is fine. Or 2 adults with 6 kids (depends on age), is also ok (assuming you can handle 6 kids). We reserve the right to determine suitability of the house for any particular group; hope you understand! please note that while Jakes is pet friendly, dogs are not permitted on the beaches of South Walton without a permit, and only residents can get them, but there are wonderful trails and sandy roads in Grayton and along 30A for you to enjoy walks with your pooch!

Great Location! Nice Place.

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Jake's Place several times in the past and have always been pleased. This past stay we had some problems with appliances but the owner was quick to respond and replaced the wash machine within days. The location is great and it is just a short walk to the beach. I'm sure we will be back to Jake's again.

Another Amazing Stay at Jake's Place

  • 5 of 5

Our family has stayed at Jake's Place six times over the last nine years and plan on keep coming back. Aside from all the amazing beauty, activities and convenience Grayton Beach has to offer, staying at Jake's Place enhances the Grayton experience. Just park the car, grab the bikes and no more driving required. The house is perfectly situated between the beach (I think the best on 30a); restaurants like the Red Bar, Charingos (best Margarita I've ever had), AJ's , The Craft Bar, Another Broken Egg and be sure to walk to Hibiscus House for a grilled muffin. The chefs of the family can cook with ease having a well equipped kitchen, plenty of food storage and a good refrigerator (no ice maker, plenty of ice trays) and if you forget the little ingredients, the Grayton General Store is a 2 min. bike ride. The house even has three separate eating locations (inside table, screen porch and pool area). After a hot day at the beach, the dipping pool is perfect to cool off with the nice private, partially shaded pool area. We love sitting on the front porch with coffee or cocktails and waving to the beach goers. The house living area of the house is very cozy, cute but bedrooms are sectioned nicely to provide privacy. Gail (owner) is great and very helpful.

Cute beach house in the middle of Grayton.

  • 4 of 5

Comfy place, close to the beach and the Red Bar. We didn’t have a chance to try out the pool since it was too cold outside during our stay. First impression was that the house was smaller than expected. It says that it sleeps 8, but I wouldn’t push past two couples with 1-2 small children. We were two adults with three kids and it was a bit of a squeeze. Kitchen is decently equipped. We cooked quite a bit. Good dishwasher, and nice to have full-size washer and dryer, even though the washer can’t be run at night due to sound. The doors are thin and you hear everything in the place. Our host was gracious and accommodating. Overall a good experience.

Owner's Response: We thank the reviewer for her kind words about Jakes and our courtesies and service. Just a couple of clarifications that might help future guests. We didn't know that the washer was making noise; our snowbirds who arrived (after the reviewer's stay) in January told us about it making a loud noise (the reviewer didn't tell us about it). A bearing had gone bad, and so we got a new washer there within 48 hours of our finding out. We always respond quickly to any guest concerns. So, now, the cottage has a brand new washing machine (and also a brand new fridge). It's a beach cottage -- in our description of the house on VRBO (which was there when the reviewer booked) we emphasize that, although the house will sleep 8 max (and it has, many many times over the 18 years we've owned Jakes), the comfort level and whether it will sleep 8 comfortably depends on the number and size/age of adults and children. This review notes: "wouldn't push past 1-2 couples with 1-2 small children" -- that would be 3-6 people. The reviewer had five people total, including three young children, so her family size actually fits exactly within her review description of what the cottage, with three bedrooms and two full baths, would serve. We don't offer our home to guests if we believe it would be too small or uncomfortable for them, and we always offer to answer any questions or concerns prior to booking. The cottage is almost 1200 square feet and the photos on VRBO show the cottage well, all parts of the cottage are depicted in the photos, including all bedrooms. Thanks for reading this response and we hope you will read some of our 50 plus five star reviews.

Jake's is Our Happiest "Happy Place"!

  • 5 of 5

Everything to love! Nothing to regret! We LOVE Jakes.

We have stayed in this area probably 30-40 times over the past 25 years. We've stayed in condos, cottages, houses, and we've camped.

To us, if we can get it, Jakes it our favorite place hands down - and Gail is the best!

Things we love:

- the location (a few steps or very short bike ride from The Red Bar, Charingos, Grayton General Store, and now even a new AJ's)

- We love that it's an extremely short bike ride straight down to the beach (We put backpack-style beach chairs on our backs and ride our bikes down. It's like a 1-2 minute ride.)

- the pool and pool area - so private, heated (small pool, but plenty big enough. We think it's perfect.)

- the shade trees around Jake's and along the street

- the screened porch (love breakfasts and dinners on the porch)

- the outdoor shower

- the décor (art and Hemingway pics... beachy, fun, and comfortable)

- comfy beds

- washer and dryer

- good table for playing board games or cards

- well stocked kitchen for cooking at home

- very clean

- love sitting on the front porch at night - chatting and people-watching

Dislikes: NONE

If we could move to Jake's Place we would! I can't think of a single thing not to love about Jake's. It's our favorite place to be!

Liked Jake's So Much That We Bought a House!

  • 5 of 5

Love this place! We come back year after year and it's always the best. We've been coming twice a year for the last several years. The place is well maintained, a small walk to beautiful Grayton Beach, and within walking or bike riding distance to the Red Bar and other great destinations. It doesn't get any better than this. Now, our daughter nd her family travel from Oklahoa and vacation here. My company has decided to hold strategic planning meetings and team building sessions for small groups at Jake's. My wife and I loved this so much that we bought a house a few miles away so that we can enjoy the area all year round. By the way, Gail the owner is the best! She's like finding a long-lost family member who owns a beautiful beach cottage in Florida's best kept secret!

Exceeded our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We've been going to the Grayton Beach/Seaside area for 6 years and this was our first time at Jake's Place. We went the first week of June 2016. We were 4 adults, a 2 year old, a 7 year old and our small dog. It was perfect for us. We brought our bikes and rode to the nearby beach each day. The kitchen was well equipped, there was plenty of room, everything was great. We were very comfortable at Jake's Place and plan to return in the future.
