Dog-Friendly Fishing/Ski Home, Organic Yard, by River/Mountain

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

WELCOME to 515 Wood River Drive, one of the original fishing homes in Ketchum, Idaho! We face the Big Wood River, with great fishing year 'round. And we're just a short walk to town, the bike path, and Bald Mountain -- Sun Valley's premier peak with great winter skiing.

Our authentic, beautifully preserved log home has been completely remodeled: two bedrooms and two baths upstairs and a large master bedroom and bath downstairs. But, we’ve retained the original log-cabin look of the original house. We were in love with the house when we first saw it; we love it even more after our extensive and careful remodeling. And, we’ve attempted to bring inside some of the outside that is historic Ketchum, the Ketchum we love. The kitchen’s hickory cabinets blend with the color of the logs of the outer walls. The white tile reflects the snow in season, while the forest green grouting and other green accent colors — like the green leather and upholstery in the living room — reflect the evergreens and grass of the spring and summer.

In keeping with our affection for the house, which we want to share with you, you will find a number of fragile wood carvings — of fish, beaver, raccoon, and bear — that we commissioned a Montana artist to create. We had another artist capture the feeling of Idaho in oil paintings you’ll find displayed in the living room, the master bedroom, and the hallway. The house is light and sunny; windows overlook the yard and the Big Wood River. It’s not a very large home; very few homes in this area, many 70 years old and even older, are not large … at least by today’s standards. But our house is charming and cozy.

The house comfortably sleeps 6 in beds. We also have an optional cottage on the property with a queen bed, living/dining area, and washer/dryer. It can be rented either to guests in the house or separately.

We love dogs — I am privileged to own two adorable Goldens myself — and have designed the house to accommodate the needs and safety of our four-legged friends. The property is completely private with mature trees surrounded by a handsome fence that offers full security to children and pets.

About The Owner

Mary Ann Peters grew up in Northern California, a member of an old California family, who enjoyed fly fishing, backpacking and skiing in the west with its Golden Retrievers. Upon receiving her PhD, she moved to Palo Alto, California where she has lived and worked, lecturing on marketing at the MBA level, running a high tech consultancy, and participating on boards.

The Owner purchased this house in 1990

Why The Owner chose Sun Valley Area

As a youngster, her family would vacation in the Sawtooth region where they hiked, fished, and skied in the winter. She developed her love for down hill skiing on Bald Mountain (Baldy) in Sun Valley. Once the family was grown, she and her husband purchased a gem in Ketchum; one they remodeled over 15 years. It was important to the family, to maintain the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ of old Ketchum even though they completely updated the property.

What makes this house unique

One can enjoy an extensive book collection while relaxing in a home not a vacation rental house. The property was remodeled with one thing in mind: guests should feel comfortable as if they were in their own home. And if one likes to cook, he/she will find almost every cooking gadget he/she requires. The large, fenced backyard is safe for children and dogs whom we welcome. The property is fertilize with organic, safe products; no chemicals. From the picnic table one has beautiful views of Baldy and one of the 30, lovely evergreen trees that line the property. The bike path is minutes from the house. One can walk to town in 10 minutes or ‘skip’ down the path to River Run to join the Bald Mountain hiking trail or jump in the River to cast a line. The house is conveniently located for all types of activities provided by The Sun Valley Company (Summer Symphony, music concerts, ice skating, hockey, gallery walks, and more). Biking, mountain biking, fly fishing, skiing, hiking, and walking are just of some the outdoor activities that are available within minutes from the house. And if one wants to stay ‘home’ one can relax, read, or sit at the picnic table and enjoy the views and weather.

We've stayed here multiple times and its always great - pet and kid friendly. An amazing views of the mountain (Baldy) from your patio complete with picnic table and grill. Its easy to walk into town and has easy access to trails for hiking or biking. Mary Ann is the perfect host and you'll love this place!

Great mountain home - close to town & skiing

  • 5 of 5

My family and I rented for Christmas this year - Two dogs, 2 kids and nothing but fun. The kitchen was well stocked, easy use of outdoors for dogs to play and cozy setting for games and puzzling apres ski.

We will definitely come again - hopefully next time for some fishing!

Great In Town location for Winter Fun

  • 5 of 5

Three couples (we each had our own bathroom) and our welsh corgi spent a week in Mary Ann's lovely, historic Ketchum home this past February. It was the perfect size, and such a great alternative to all the SV condos. We gathered in the LR for a apres ski cocktail by the fire for chat and/or books late each afternoon. We cooked several meals in the kitchen and had some festive meals around her large dining room table. The convenient location also made it perfect for walking back and forth to town for dinner and other activities in town. We hope to be back next year.

Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

If we owned a second home, this is exactly what it would look like! Actually, it is so welcoming and comfortable that after 4 straight years we have come to think of it as “our” winter home. At least for a week each ski season. Mary Ann runs a very tight ship and we always find her cabin well organized and perfectly appointed for our nordic ski get-away. Although we rarely need anything, her on-call staff has always been quick to respond; attentive to any need, however great or small. The kitchen is well equipped, the dining area is perfect for large gatherings, the beds comfortable and most importantly, the entire home is always squeaky clean!

Nestled in the trees next to the Wood River, the cabin is perfectly situated. The Wood River Trail is within walking distance, as is town and downhill skiing if you so choose. It’s amazingly close to everything, yet at the same time it feels so far away.

Best Place to Stay in Sun Valley/Ketchum

  • 5 of 5

i have stayed here many times over the last six years. It is truly a retreat. The home itself is charming, not the large granite tiled monstrosities that litter Ketchum. It has a terrific yard and patio that are lovely and quiet in the summer and a large dining table to gather around near the fireplace in the winter. We have enjoyed the home with groups of all sizes, from 4 adults to several families. You can rent the cottage across the patio to expand the accommodation.

From this property, we enjoy the alpenglow on the mountains, fish the wood river, ride the extensive paved bike trail, access the mountain trails for hiking and mountain biking, x-country ski, ride the chairlifts at the ski resort, and then walk to town for dinner, drinks and shopping! All of this without ever getting into the car.

The owner is wonderfully accommodating. When one member of our party got a flat tire on a Sunday, not only did the owner arrange for another night so that the tire could be repaired, she even recommended where to go for the best service on the repair! She is a dog lover and will let your fuzzy kids stay with you at this property. One of the only, and certainly the best, options for those traveling with their canine companions.
