About Bob Clydesdale

Bob and Karen Clydesdale bought Morewood from the city in the 1980s while living in the Berkshires. Karen spent three years converting the building from the dirt up with new wide plank floors to the new roof to drag it into the 21st century while preserving the historical exterior and enhancing the grounds and interior ambiance.

Bob Clydesdale purchased this house in 1985

Why Bob Clydesdale chose Berkshires

Morewood School is located in the center of Berkshire County with a long historical connection to the old Pittsfield families such as the Morewoods, Holmes and Melvilles. The new interior and preserved exterior provides an uncommon comfort level and access to the year round attractions of Western Mass.

What makes this house unique

Minutes to Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, Shaker Village, Norman Rockwell Museum, Shakespeare and Berkshire Theatre Festivals, Berkshire Opera House, Pittsfield Country Club, Cranwell Golf Course and Spa, Baseball Museum, Wahconah Baseball Park, Lenox and Great Barrington antique shopping, fine dining throughout the County, boating and fishing on many lakes. Located at the base of Bousquet Mountain ski resort and a short drive to Jiminy Peak and other down hill and cross country ski areas. Located two hours from Boston and NYC and only eight miles north of the last exit on the Mass Turnpike, Morewood is the perfect Berkshire vacation spot.

Guestbook comments from the owner

For those who visit the Berkshires from Germany I offer a review in our language. After a fall visit I decided to try a winter month. Well, who could guess that it would snow so much and be so cold in February. The cottage has welcomed me with a warmth and from the first moment I felt at home. It has been lovingly restored. The kitchen is well equipped and had comfortable bed linen and warm blankets in the loft. The location is ideal for exploring the area and the supermarket is not far away. Although I was alone in this adorable house, my stay was great and I plan to another one month there. Minor problems with the very cold weather were quickly is fixed. It's beautiful!

Perfect Winter Ski Vacation

  • 5 of 5

I brought my young family from Atlanta to the Berkshires to learn to ski. I learned on Bousquet Mountain when I was in elementary school and not much as changed which is good. The schoolhouse was an added treat for the kids. They were warm and comfortable after a cold day on the slopes in front of the flames from the gas stove in the great room while I fixed a hot dinner. We had several feet of snow and it was perfect for a winter vacation. I'd like to try to come back in the summer to sit in the lawn chairs by the outside fire and explore the area more.

Lovely little intimate getaway spot!

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I escaped to the schoolhouse after the holidays to celebrate the New Year with our little pup and we found it delightful. It's one main space with an open loft for the bedroom which is both cozy and intimate but also doesn't feel like you're right on top of each other which was perfect. Besides a few challenges with a few of the appliances... (washing machine was out of order and the dishwasher was too smart for its own good and would start up on its own) this was a great spot and my wife and I definitely plan to come back at some point in the future!

Good but not great second stay

  • 3 of 5

We came back for a second stay at the Old Schoolhouse after having a wonderful stay in July 2016. Our second stay was good but not great. We had a couple of issues that we reported to the owners - the dishwasher wasn't working. After calling the owners, we did, after much hassle get it going, but the following night the dishwasher again failed to start. This required us to hand wash all dishes the morning of our departure, where the water ran cold part way through (owner sent out someone after we left and reported they found no problem - just strange to have that happen). Not a big deal to hand wash dishes, but you do hope to have everything working when you pay a fairly high amount (so far, no partial refund that I have requested). Stairs up to the bed room are rather slippery which caused our dog to take a couple of tumbles. I have reported this to the owner also.

Wonderful stay, wonderful converted school house

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a 4 night stay at this historic school house. What was most impressive was the amount of space in the kitchen/great room area. We were able to spread out our gear without feeling in any way cluttered. The loft was small but comfortable, and even in the midst of Summer the window and floor fan worked like a charm, keeping the whole house cool. While the arial view of the property makes it seem like the house is near to a busy road, it is, but we couldn't hear anything at night (and we are sticklers for wanting no traffic noise when we are away). A great stay and we will be back!

Charming Renovated Schoolhouse

  • 4 of 5

We had been thinking about staying at the Schoolhouse for years, and finally visited this summer. We were very glad we did as it is comfortable and well located for excursions in the Berkshires.

Everything was clean and there is a well-equipped large kitchen area. The interior has high ceilings, making the interior more spacious than expected. Our dog was quite happy with the fenced in yard area and the shading from the trees kept it cool during a hot weekend.

Communicating with Bob (the owner) was very easy, and there is a notebook of instructions and suggestion at the schoolhouse that we found helpful.

We are looking forward to returning soon!

Comfortable and well equipped

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of spending an extended stay at Morewood this winter. If you go to the Home and Garden site, you will see a video that describes the property better than we can. The place was "as advertised" in the video. Everything functioned perfectly, the location is private, convenient and safe. The place was clean when we arrived. The kitchen was especially important to us since we cooked in most of the time. We found it well equipped and easy to work in, and the appliances are up to date and work fine. The modern bathroom lacks a tub, but the walk in shower is very spacious and the water pressure and hot water are quite adequate. We found it helpful that the linens and towels were provided as well as soap, a hair dryer, etc. A washer and dryer are also provided and they work well. Heat is provided by a gas faux wood stove that keeps the place comfortable when it is cold out. Guests leave essentials like dish detergent, laundry detergent, sugar, salt, food wraps, some herbs, etc which is convenient especially for shorter stays. Mr. Clydesdale is readily accessible by phone and email in case you need his assistance, and he is a pleasure to deal with.

Pittsfield itself is not a vacation destination, of course, but it is convenient to the Berkshire attractions. One possible drawback for some guests may be that the main bedroom area is upstairs in a loft. If you don't like the idea of going up and down stairs in the middle of the night, you can use the very comfortable convertible sofa in the main room that has a good air mattress that's easy to use.

We are planning to return to Morewood and encourage anyone who is looking for a home away from home experience in the Berkshires to consider staying there.

Take the back road short cut to the Tanglewood parking lot past the winding river through the hills and valleys. Berkshires have long been known as a cultural destination. Now, longtime arts and culture heavyweights like Tanglewood in Lenox and MASS MoCA in North Adams are being joined by an explosion of smaller galleries, and the shops and services that come along with them. Meanwhile, the food scene plays to the area’s strengths — farm-fresh produce, artisanal cheeses and pasture-raised meats. Farmers’ markets from tiny to huge take over parking lots and fields on weekend mornings.
