About this property

The Tannery! Private Dipping Pool In The Warm Springs Stream! Pet Friendly!

The Tannery was built ca. 1820 on Old Germantown Road, an historic central byway, which in its heyday was an important part of revolutionary Virginia and used for the exploration of the then western frontier. Constructed with handmade brick and heart pine beams, The Tannery was initially a blacksmith shop, a tannery and a relay station for riders to obtain fresh horses.

In 1997, The Tannery was updated, remodeled and furnished with antiques. Large double back porches overlook two streams, a lovely treed half acre and the Alleghany Mountains. The Warm Springs Stream flows through the rear of the property, with warm mineral water around 75-85 degrees depending on whether it has rained or the air temperature is cool. There is a small pool and waterfall for a unique soaking experience day or night. To the side of the house, a cold artisan spring trickles through watercress to meet the Warm Springs Stream.

Within walking distance, the center of Warm Springs village is a charming step back into time. The newly renovated Warm Springs Pools are a quarter mile from The Tannery. The village is 5 miles north of the historic Homestead Hotel. Wonderful restaurants are abundant including pubs. The area is also surrounded by State and National Park land with plenty of out door activities. Or just relax on the main porch of The Tannery: read, bird watch, or nap. The Tannery is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or an activity filled weekend. Come enjoy the beautiful mountains of Virginia.

Absolutely a magical place!! The dipping pool in the back was oh so relaxing and the temperature was perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed sleeping in the screened porch upstairs. It was like sleeping in a treehouse! Insects chirping and water running from the stream was meditative!! I loved the experience. The house is magnificent, accommodating and unique. If you looking for a relaxing experience, this is the place!

House is charming but old. Five star outstanding features include sleeping porches, a lovely yard and surroundings, and, of course, the magical warm mineral "dipping" creek in the back yard, which are alone worth the stay. I would strongly recommend that owners find a way to install a full sized refrigerator near the kitchen, as the dormitory sized one on the floor, and the full sized one in the basement (which you have to go outside to reach) is quite inconvenient. There are a lot of stairs. Also, guests should be aware that the house is only a few feet from the road, although there is very little traffic. A unique and beautiful property - recommend it for adults only.

The Tannery is an oasis of tranquility. The house is located on a quiet road and offers plenty of privacy. The house itself was the perfect size for me and my wife. The kitchen is small, but has everything you need to make breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The screened-in porch was the perfect place to enjoy morning coffee and enjoy the sounds of nature. To be perfectly frank, most of your time should be spent in the true gem of this property: the warm springs swimming hole. It is private, quiet, and refreshing. If you are seeking a reset, a day spent in the spring is exactly what you need. The ability to have your own private mineral soak, in and of itself, makes this property a gem. When combined with a space with such history, this property is a can’t-miss. It is a special opportunity to have your own hidden mountain paradise. Also, a word on the mouse issue. This property is very rural. During my time, I saw deer, chipmunks, field mice, and a hawk. The swimming hole has fish in it who are very curious. However, I did not see any signs of any “critters” in the house. The house is spotless. The space itself shows how much pride the owners take in it. This property is historic and, as such, is very rustic. One of the main reasons to stay here is to get back to nature. You’ll probably see animals of all shapes and sizes by the spring, but there aren’t mice in the house.

Warm Springs Getaway

We enjoyed the location of the property and had so much fun with our dog in the warm Springs at the back of the home. Perfect location to walk to town and the Warm Springs Pools just down the road. Many wonderful dining options close by. We loved using the Wood Stove at night!

What a wonderful property! This house felt special from the moment we arrived. You could tell how much the owners care for the home from the cozy decor to the historic wood floors. We loved spending time on the porch playing cards and soaking in the stream at the back of the property. The weather was perfect for our stay but even if it was raining we would have had a great time. The stream itself was awesome. There were two places in the stream that were deep enough to dunk under the water. The water was crystal clear, we could see straight to the bottom! The water was warm and inviting. We had never experienced anything like it!The house itself was clean and equipped with the essentials for our stay. Other reviews mentioned a mouse issue but we saw none of that during our stay. The location of the house was also excellent, we were able to walk to restaurants & the Warm Springs Pools. Check in and out was easy. The hosts were very friendly and communicative. The only constructive feedback we had was that the beds were too firm for us personally, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a foam topper. For anyone planning to cook at the house, there are limited options for grocery stores so make sure to shop ahead of time! The mini fridge is small in the kitchen but we made it work just fine. Overall, if you’re looking for a nature-forward, peaceful, and quiet getaway, this is the place for you! I’ll be recommending this place to lots of people I know.

Charming Historic Property

My husband and I thought The Tannery was the perfect place to stay for our anniversary. We weren't looking for modern amenities, and between its size and its age, it reminded us of several places we have lived in the past. The Warm Springs Stream pool and waterfall were wonderful. The water was just the right temperature (not hot and not cold), and the privacy was appreciated. We enjoyed our stay very much.

A Warm Spring at The Tannery

What a wonderful find. 200 year old house in perfect cozy condition. The back porch saw a lot of us. The babbling brook in the back yard is warm spring-fed as described. Soaking pool there was warm indeed. Spent a lot of time there too. Hosts Mimi and Jack told us everything we needed to know. Looking forward to a return trip.

Wonderful, relaxing visit out of the city

We had a wonderful experience at the Tannery. The inside was cozy and clean. We spent most of our time on the lovely back deck and really enjoyed listening to the sounds of nature on the sleeping porch. We also enjoyed our dip in the spring and some walks to the small village nearby. The owners also were great to communicate with and accommodated some additional requests of ours. Would love to come again!

Relax in the Tannery

We loved our weekend stay at the Tannery! The backyard stream was invigorating. Despite the morning October chill, we enjoyed the backyard water before our soak at nearby Jefferson pool. Dinner and drinks at Waterwheel Restaurant were within walking distance. The porches were tranquil with the sound of the stream. Our stay refreshed us!

Unique and beautiful place

My wife and I just enjoyed the nicest weekend at The Tannery. This is a historic old brick building that is comfortably rustic. We slept on the sleeping porch which we hadn’t done in decades, and which was really fun, listening to the sounds, looking at the moon rise, the stars and then the sun rise. So fun. The property has a creek that is the runoff from the Warm Springs Pools so it is warm and easy to get into. We were in walking distance to the Pools and also to the first class Waterwheel Restaurant and on the way back from dinner a yearling bear stood up and checked us out before bounding off. Highly recommend this property for a Warm Springs visit!

Unsafe Location

The property owners have the keys for the property under a hide-a-key and expect the renters to return it after entry (keys on the dining room table). In addition to using a hide-a-key that is generally unsafe, none of the windows on the lower level have a lock on them and open very easily. VRBO customer service confirmed these are safety violations, so stay at your own risk.

lovely house and property

Didn't get the full experience, as it rained all week and the creek was chilly, but enjoyed ourselves, nonetheless. Sleeping porch is the best! Little bit of an ant challenge that can be easily remedied with a trash can with a lid that seals. Otherwise great! We hope to come back to Warm Springs.

Beautiful!

We picked the perfect time to visit this beautiful property. The air was cool and all the leaves were turning brilliant fiery shades of orange, red, and yellow. Steam rose from the springs each chilly morning, and in the afternoon, we climbed in and enjoyed the warm water after a long hike at the nearby trail. Saturday evening we ate at the Waterwheel Restaurant, and it was wonderful! I recommend this property to anyone, and look forward to coming back for a longer stay. :)

Looking forward to our next stay

This was our third time staying at the historic Tannery, and it continues to be one of our favorite places. Warm Springs and the entire mountain area is a relaxing rural getaway from the daily grind. Easy walking and driving distance to many good restaurants, as well as great local hikes and biking, and of course is dog friendly. One of our favorite things is the sleeping porch. Also, be sure to take advantage of the access to the 'Warm Springs' in the back yard, the same spring that flows from the Jefferson Pools up the road. Also keep an eye out for the local wildlife, such as deer, chipmunks, flying squirrels, and even a family of black bears. We're already looking forward to our next stay!

Relaxing get away in Bath County

Super adorable property right on the warm springs. 90% of our time was spent either on the back porch or down by the springs. The springs are nice and neat not snaky or weedy. They are indeed great for soaking and floating. We did unfortunately have mice in the house so if you have an issue with those check with the property owner to see if they have vacated. There were also quite a few small spiders and webs inside. The kitchen had ants but we seemed to have finally gotten rid of them by the end of our stay. The place is within easy walking to the little town and close to other local attractions. Be sure to look up at the stars at night while you are there! I'd stay here again inspite of our creature friends that we had.

First getaway with Bala

What a great place rustic and charming!!!!! It was our first getaway with our dog Bala, and we choose the Tannery because they allowed pets. The back yard was a dream come true for Bala. She enjoyed running all over the place. We brought along our badminton set and had some fierce games between my wife, son and me. We all enjoyed the beds on the screen upper deck especially during the rain that rolled through the first night. The stream out back was the cherry on top. The sound of it from the back decks was soothing and my son and I enjoyed catching minnows with our hands. Even Bala approved of the stream. The only thing I would say as an improvement would be some memory foam topper for the beds.

The Tannery

We have stayed in dozens of B&B’s and cottages over the last 40 years in the mountains of Virginia. This was by far the worst. Our first impression when we walked in was a dark and dreary place. We turned on every light we could find, and it was still dark. The pictures shown in the listing have been enhanced to make it seem much brighter. Our next impression was that it was infested with mice – currently and in the past. We have had a house in the mountains for 24 years and understand how the critters get in. We also understand the diligence necessary to keep the place clean of mouse droppings. We experienced the familiar odor of a dead mouse behind the cupboard that held the microwave, a dead mouse in a trap under the wardrobe upon arrival, a live mouse by the bed, fresh mouse droppings on the back bedroom windowsill and old, old mouse droppings on top of the radiant floor heaters that had been fossilized. The “fully equipped “kitchen included a dormitory refrigerator that had not been defrosted for months and a tiny apartment stove. Fortunately for us we did not cook any meals. I’m not sure if the soaking pool description is just flat out misleading or we were there at the wrong time. Other people seemed to love it. The water temperature was about 75 degrees, and any soaking pool was not to be found- maybe the water was too high. On a positive note, the screened back porch was delightful .

Hot springs weekend

We had a magical stay at this property! Given it’s historic nature, be sure to expect lower ceilings and uneven floors. However, that only added to the magic of the location! It truly felt like being transported back in time (with the amenities of clean bed sheets and a warm shower, of course!). The spring at the back of the property truly is a hot spring. We would definitely recommend staying here. Our only suggestion would be to message the host ahead of your stay about the location of the key. Additionally, please note that the only television on the property is an old CRTV with vhs attachment. Our stay was focused on a visit to the Hot Springs and touring Bath County, so this wasn’t an issue for us.

Loved it

Loved the history of the place, and feeling like I was in a rustic historic cabin. The steam coming off the warm spring was so neat in the mornings or at night. Cooked quite a bit in the small kitchen, which was fine since it was open layout and no tight spaces. I loved hearing the creek but not so much the vehicular traffic on nearby 39. Thankfully it is a less traveled road and it was quiet at night. The sleeping porch was probably the neatest thing ever. Above all, the communication with the host, Mimi, was stellar and what made this possible. I was honest with her and requested approval for both my hairless Sphynx kitty and adding two adults and two infants last minute for one of the nights. We worked together on some solutions. She was very accommodating. Thank you! Wish I had stayed longer. The area is gorgeous -- driving on US 220 is the most scenic and relaxing drive in the fall (from Falling Springs Falls about 20 min south to Monterrey about 40 min north). There is also an IGA grocery 5 miles away in Hot Springs.

About the host

Hosted by Jack & Mimi deOlloqui-Turner

Host profile image
Jack and Mimi have owned The Tannery since 1999. They split their time between Colorado and the two Virginias. They love being in Warm Springs when they are able to. The history, the waters and the natural beauty of Bath County have always been close to their hearts. Their guests love it as much as they do.

Why they chose this property

This area of Virginia is stunningly beautiful. The village of Warm Springs has always been a haven for vacationers. Since the early 1700's people have come to 'take the waters', hunt, fish and enjoy the mountains. The area is also the home of the world famous Homestead and Greenbrier Resort Hotels.

What makes this property unique

The Tannery has it's own little soaking pool in the back yard with temperatures around 80* unless it rains and a beautiful potable spring running down the right of the property. The house is a short walk to the Simon Kenton Pub and Waterwheel Restaurant, Warm Springs Inn Restaurant, Dairy Barn, Warm Springs Library, Art Galleries and Historic Society. Driving distance from Hot Springs and Garth Newell Music Conservatory where classical, bluegrass and jazz concerts are given. Hiking, fishing, riding and skiing are also close at hand. However, if you'd just like to relax, our back porches and hammock are there overlooking the apple trees.
