About this property

7thNtfree CasadeVaca II SantaFeAdobeCharm!

Casa de la Vaca II – Traditional adobe Santa Fe House on 5 Acres

For over a decade, this two-bedroom, two-bath adobe has been a beloved VRBO destination. Now under new ownership, Casa de la Vaca II continues to offer guests the perfect blend of Santa Fe charm, comfort, and natural beauty. Set on 5 private acres in the secluded Cañoncito Valley, the home is just 12 miles from Santa Fe Plaza, close to the Agora Market, great restaurants, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Pet-friendly with prior approval ($100 per pet).

The Space
Casa de la Vaca II is a traditional two-story adobe featuring exposed vigas, latillas, and a mix of brick, tile, and wood floors. The home has been refreshed throughout and is ideal for two couples or a family.
• Kitchen: New granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, Keurig, blender, toaster, cookware, and spices.
• Living Areas: Cozy living room with smart TV (bring your streaming logins), sleeping nook for 1 adult, and a sofa that can fit 1 child. Bright sunroom with large windows for capturing stunning sunsets.
• Bedrooms:
• Master bedroom – Queen bed, wood-burning fireplace, and en-suite bathroom.
• Guest bedroom – Queen bed, plush linens, and adjacent guest bathroom.
• Extra Features: Laundry with new washer/dryer, 100 Mbps high-speed internet (fast for Cañoncito), board games, books, and a portable massage table with disposable headrest covers.
• Outdoor Spaces: Private courtyard with grill and seating, perfect for morning coffee, yoga, or stargazing.

Special Notes:
1. Water – Our water comes from a shared underground well and is filtered through triple ozone, multi-stage filtration, and a Primo water filtration system for drinking. While perfectly safe, it may have a mild sulfur scent common in mountain wells. If you prefer city water, you may want to stay in town.
2. Access & Parking – All-wheel drive is recommended in winter. You’ll drive 800 feet of unpaved road before reaching our gravel driveway. Parking is available at the stonework by the right entrance. A complimentary Level 2 EV charger (NEMA 10-30 with Tesla adapter) is available in the carport. 3. Main House - there is another rental home adjacent to this property on the left which is the guest house. There is a courtyard separating the two homes. We ask our guests to be respectful of other guests andd neighbors and keep noise to a minimum. Each home has their own private entrances and outdoor spaces.

Location & Activities
Casa II borders a 4,000-acre nature preserve with well-marked hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. Hiking sticks are provided for your use. The area is home to hummingbirds, wildflowers, and mountain views, with almost no light pollution for spectacular night skies. Santa Fe’s art galleries, shopping, and renowned cuisine are only a 20-minute drive away.

Cleanliness & Comfort
We follow enhanced cleaning protocols, with extra attention after pet stays, so all guests feel comfortable and safe.

Pet Policy
Well-behaved dogs only (sorry, no cats) are welcome with prior approval and a $100 fee per pet. Please crate dogs when left alone and keep them off the furniture.

Nearby Dining
Local favorites include Café Fina, Bourbon Grill, and Harry’s Roadhouse. Groceries, gas, and shops are nearby in Eldorado, while Santa Fe offers Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and endless dining options. Our Welcome Book and online guide include curated recommendations.

Place of serenity

This adobe home was an incredible find! When you walk to front door thru the beautiful entry arch, you can already feel yourself relaxing! The sunporch was a lovely place for morning coffee. The kitchen was stocked with what we needed for meal preps and nicely updated. Bedrooms were comfortable and were perfect for 2 couple stay. We would highly recommend this lovely home. The owner was very responsive with any communication needed.

Stargazing gem

Came here with our three kids (9, 7 and 4), and had a great stay. Beds were comfortable, the house was so quiet, and we took full advantage of the various outdoor seating options. Kitchen was well stocked, and we made several yummy meals. The stargazing at night was truly wonderful, and we were even able to catch a meteor shower on our last night. We purposefully chose a home outside of town, and the drive to and from Santa Fe and other attractions was reasonable.

Family trip to Santa Fe

The host was very responsive and checked in to make sure we settled in comfortably. We enjoyed our stayed and the place was nice when it snowed. The location was more remote and further from the center of Santa Fe than we anticipated. We have stayed in Santa Fe several times and this is the most remote we ever stayed. Other than the location, everything else we good.

Peaceful Getaway

This home was a lovely, peaceful getaway about 15-20 minutes outside of Santa Fe. It was well-equipped, allowing us to settle in easily. The surrounding area is gorgeous, and the stargazing at night is incredible. The only caveat we would offer is that due to use of well water, the water pressure can be a bit weak and does smell of sulfur.

Thank you for the kind comments and so glad you enjoyed your stay. Given the super drought we have experienced this year 2021, the Santa Fe water table has been lower than normal so from time to time a sulfur smell can come although not dangerous. For future readers, the home is in Santa Fe and approx 20 minutes to the plaza.

Enjoyable stay and good value.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay very much. The property was very private even though we had someone renting the studio apt next to us, we never heard them. We loved the sunroom and convenient kitchen. There are a few updates and repairs that need attention but we were told they will be taken care of. Overall our experience was very nice. Love this little casita! Very cozy! Great value!

Perfect seclusion

A girlfriend and I planned a weekend get away in Santa Fe. This time was ideal for us. It is quaint and quiet. The natural scenery is beautiful! One night we went to ship in Santa Fe, then came back and cooked dinner. The Kitchen had everything we needed. One night we stopped mimosas by the outdoor fire and watched the moon rise over three mountains. We could not ask food anything better. It was clean, cozy, well-defined, and beautiful decor. If I'm ever in Santa Fe again, I would definite stay there.

Beautiful property

Loved this quaint little place. It was such a nice getaway. My Only complaint is that the second bedroom didn’t have a door. Just a sheer curtain as a door. This little nugget of information was not posted anywhere. We should have been informed of this prior to. We enjoyed our stay though. It was nice to have both great indoor and outdoor space.

So glad you enjoyed the home. this beautiful Santa fe adobe charm home is listed for max 4 guests. in 5 years renting thus home, privacy in the home has not been addressed as an issue as the bedrooms are on opposite sides of the home. several exceptions had been granted this renter such as 5 guests stayed and pet when max guests allowed were 4. a four hour check in was given and 50 percent off low season discount. glad she enjoyed her stay.

So great! Our dream home.

Awesome property and 5 adults very much enjoyed our stay. Yes it’s remote, but that’s what makes it so great. Beautiful sunsets and stars we haven’t seen in many years. The house is beautiful, cozy, and clean. The view is wonderful (could be spectacular eliminating just two trees blocking what would be a much wider amazing view). The smaller bedroom needs additional a/c flow on hot summer afternoons, and the master shower needs a simple shelf for soap, shampoo, razor, etc. Sure, there are always a few suggestions we have for our vacation rentals, but this place has very few. We just left and already planning to get back. Highly recommended!

Nice house but

The house is really cute but the stench of the water made it uninhabitable. We took showers and all smelled like sulphur so we went to shower again at a hotel. There were also sounds of animals in the walls at night so sleeping was a challenge. Good luck to whoever rents this property.

Regretfully there were problems with this guest who appears to be disgruntled from the beginning of her stay. She had asked to check in four hours early for a family funeral as other family members were in town for the funeral that same day. I had shared it would not be possible to offer a check in that early as another family would be checking out that same day and the home needed to be cleaned meeting covid protocol as well. Instead the client went to the home anyway at 10 30 in the morning and noticed my housekeeper was there delivering items for the home cleaning later that day. The guests shared with the housekeepers they had a funeral to attend and wished to check in now. The housekeepers rearranged their cleaning schedule that day and cleaned the home so the guests could check in 5 ½ hours early without the owner’s consent. Reviewing the message thread history it took 6 documented attempts to have the guest respond to one question I sent confirming guest count and reservation at time of booking for several days and after multiple times asking finally get her response. It also appears she did not review her check out instructions as well as the home was left disrespectfully at check out. The previous guests who stayed at the home nor the current guest staying there now left no mention of smells and issues. It is common in the desert southwest for well water to sometimes have a sulphur smell which comes and goes. The well is serviced and cleaned monthly by a professional well/water company. As it is September and the nights are getting cooler, outdoor field critters will do what they can to enter any house to keep warm. We use a professional pest control service who comes monthly with no issues nor any reported any testimonials. For ten years renting this home and others we have been accustomed to receiving 5-star reviews consistently and take great pride in the homes we offer and hope future readers review the current and abundance of past testimonials from our happy and pleased guests.

Relaxing stay outside of Santa Fe

We spent 4 nights at this property and had planned on doing some sightseeing but after venturing out to the Santa Fe Plaza and seeing the crowds we decided to just stay at the house and relax. Mornings were spent watching the hummingbirds and nights were spent stargazing - the Milky Way is easily visible naked eye from this location. As others mentioned the water smells a bit but we just bought bottled water at a grocery store and were fine. The grocery store, Upper Crust pizza and Cafe Fine are just down the road - 10 min tops and it was easy enough to order food for take away and enjoy it back at the house. We had two dogs with us and appreciate the dog friendly rental. The owner was very responsive to emails and questions. Would definitely stay there again.

Forest views

Great forest and mountain views in a fairly private rental a reasonable drive from Santa Fe. Nice kitchen and bathrooms. Kitchen well stocked, but not cluttered. Nice amount of windows for natural light and forest views. Unique interior wood, stone, and tile construction in typical regional Adobe construction. Lots of outdoor patio and deck space in a private setting. Unit is part of a duplex. We hardly noticed the neighboring unit. Each has their own parking and entrance with good separation between the two. Road is not very walkable, however there are several hiking areas nearby, accessible by driving.

Serenity!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the property was lovely! Couldn't have wished for a more quiet, serene location to send our time exploring Santa Fe in. The property was extraordinarily clean, well kept and had all the amenities needed for our stay. We enjoyed the peace and quiet and cool evenings on the patio listening to nature the area had to offer. It was a great location to all the sites we wanted to see and close to the city of Santa Fe. It was very private even with the neighbors next door. I was worried when we realized there was no A/C but the cool breezes and evenings in the mountains kept the home comfortable for sleeping although I had no idea how to work the swamp cooler but didn't really need it. The surrounding area was beautiful and had plenty of areas for hiking right out the back door. Would definitely stay again if ever i the area! You will not be disappointed.

So glad you enjoyed the home. There is an air conditioner in the master bedroom that cools the house nicely during those rare Santa Fe hot days. Please next time let me know you need assistance during your stay and happy to show you where a/c unit is . The remote was located under the a/c on the dresser. Many thanks and so glad you enjoyed your visit and thanks for the 5 stars. We work our hardest to earn them. Francis

very nice stay

We visited with my two dogs. I was very nervous about this knowing that there wasn't a fenced in yard for my dogs to run around. I was reassured that the property was on 10 acres, but when we arrived we saw that this was not flat open useable land and the house was actually divided into two properties. The other property was also being rented by people with a dog. My dogs have a lot of energy and are not the biggest fans of other dogs, so the situation was even more difficult than I expected. Still, the house was very nice and the beds were very comfortable. We had a very nice stay even though it really didn't work well for my dogs.

Thanks for your kind comments about enjoying the home. I wish you had called me about your request for where the dogs and you could hike as there are so many places to hike and trails for the dogs down the 10 mile stretch of Ojo de La VAca where the home is located. All of our previous guests have had great experiences with their dog walks on the grounds and nearby. Next time, please call and ask as your stay could have added more hiking experiences for the dogs. Again happy to hear you enjoyed the home and come back and see us.

Secluded, Rustic Comfort

We rented CasadeVaca II in Santa Fe because we wanted to visit the Albuquerque Balloon Festival and spend a little time in Santa Fe. It's a 1-hour drive to the festival and 10-15 minutes into Santa Fe. CasadeVaca II is located in the mountains/hills east of town, and feels pretty remote - exactly what we were hoping for. We were able to sit at the table on the deck and watch the sunset behind the mountains without seeing any other houses, just trees, hills, and sky. The house itself a pretty cool place. For anyone wanting a genuine Santa Fe experience, CasadeVaca II feels like a house that's been there for a century or two but with modern amenities and comforts. And there's a pizza joint and a grocery store 8-10 minutes away. You know, for the necessities : ) Finally, we had the good fortune to meet the owners as they came to town to stay in an adjoining unit a few days before we checked out. They were great hosts and seemed happy and willing to ensure that we had a comfortable stay. I highly recommend CasadeVaca II for anyone coming to Santa Fe for a visit.

We would not recommend this home but on the plus side there were tons of flowers & birds to enjoy. We did not realize we had to share the home with other guests; had we known there would be very little privacy we would have not stayed. There were people coming and going from the other unit but the last guest had 2 large dogs who ran everywhere and scared our small dogs which made it hard to even take them to the bathroom. The house was generally clean but when we arrived I wanted a shower; there were several large clumps of long black hair on the floor master shower. There was a hover fly infestation just outside the front door on the Spanish broom plant which made it impossible to enjoy the outdoors as there were millions upon millions of hover flies circling nonstop. All of the doors around the house are either non existent or do not fit in their frames and the door handles are all extremely loose. One bedroom has a curtain instead of a door. We were unable to access the house from the sunroom several times because the door handle was so loose it wouldn’t open the door and it just came off in my hand. My husband had to take apart the handle and reassemble just so we could access the home. There was no dishwasher detergent provided even though they asked us to run the dishwasher on check; we had to purchase this. The listing said AC wasn’t necessary but we found it miserably hot in the house so we used the wall units almost nonstop.

Thank you for your feedback. While I’m glad you enjoyed the flowers and bird life, I’d like to clarify a few important points for future guests. Casa II is a fully private home — it is not shared with other guests. It has its own private entrance, courtyard, grill, and sitting area. There is a separate one-bedroom guest house adjacent to Casa II, but the two homes do not share any interior spaces, and the layout is clearly described in the listing. We do ask guests to be respectful of others and keep noise to a minimum. While we cannot control the behavior of other guests or their pets, we always encourage communication so we can help resolve any issues during your stay. As for the maintenance concerns, we take cleanliness and upkeep seriously. Had we been made aware, we would have immediately sent our team to address them. We also stock essentials like dishwasher detergent, and we would have gladly provided more if asked. Lastly, the hover flies near the Spanish broom are part of the natural high desert ecosystem. They are harmless and seasonal, though we understand they can be a nuisance for some. We work hard to maintain our home and provide a relaxing, comfortable space — and we always appreciate the opportunity to clarify and improve.

Cory and I met in Chicago. We would visit the southwest where I was born and raised and he would often ask, “Why don’t we live here”? Granted we were usually escaping the Chicago winter and enjoying 60-degree weather. We eventually moved back to my hometown of El Paso, Texas for family reasons where we have lived for the past 10 years. Cory being an adrenaline junkie loves all things outdoors. Although, he loves the El Paso desert and the 330+ days of sunshine (so he can downhill mountain bike and ride motorcycles), he also craves the winter slopes. Our 11-year-old son is doing a great job of keeping up with Cory on the black diamonds. We found the perfect compromise when we landed on Casa de la Vaca in Santa Fe! A beautiful, serene mountain get away nestled in the foothills of magical Canoncito. It’s a short drive for us and we love to stop along the way in Albuquerque. It is so kid friendly that we do trips to the museums, Explora, zoo, Mama’s minerals and our favorite Sawmill Market. In the summer, we can escape the heat in EP and with so much to do in Santa Fe we have a great place to visit all year round. We couldn’t be more excited to enjoy our second home and share it with family & friends and now thanks to platforms like VRBO with guests when we are not in town. A bit of a win, win. We love to travel and enjoy good cuisine, so Santa Fe really fits the bill. There are so many great restaurants, hiking trails, museums, spas, festivals, the opera, skiing, farmer’s markets, the second largest art market in the country, nearby Taos and Chimayo and the list goes on and on. It really is a cosmopolitan gem in the high desert. The VRBO vacation rental opportunity has allowed us to do what we love; meet new people, travel, and share our stories. We hope we get to meet you and hear your story. Best, Diana and Cory

What makes this property unique

Other things to note: Cuisine -We love to cook and have some essentials in the kitchen for your convenience. At the nearby Eldorado community, you can find gas, and groceries at the Agora market. There are also a few local eateries we like to support. Of course, we have Whole Foods, Trader Joes's and other chain supermarkets in downtown Santa Fe. You happen to be in one of the food capitals of the world so take advantage of the amazing cuisine that Santa Fe has to offer. Pets: We welcome well-behaved pooches. Sorry, felines only dogs are allowed. Pets are allowed with advanced approval at $100 per pet. This fee is included as we take added measures to thoroughly disinfect and sanitize the home to ensure there is no trace of a pet after each stay. We appreciate your cooperation in crating your pets when left alone and not allowing them on any furniture. We know our pets are family and we want them to travel with us, we have a cockapoo of our own, so we know. We also need to ensure that we respect all of our guests who may have sensitives or allergies and strive to deliver the best experience in our homes. Nature and your surroundings: You are surrounded by a 4,000 acres nature preserve with miles upon miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. These trails are very well marked and range from easy strolls to more strenuous hikes. As you drive down Ojo da la Vaca road you will see two areas to park to access the trail heads. We have hiking sticks available during your stay, adjust them and set out and explore. The items in the house are for our guests, so please feel free to enjoy. After a full day feel free to set up the portable massage table which has disposable covers for the headrest. There are also top rated spas in Santa Fe to choose from. There is so much to do and see in Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. Please check out the Welcome book for our personal recommendations. We look forward to hosting you during your stay in Santa Fe!
