About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6) private pool. Bikes included to explore.

The Keaau area is the jumping off point to see the Kilauea Lava Flow. Our home is the perfect spot to relax after a day of sightseeing. Our beautiful 3 bedroom 2 bath home has every thing you need in your home away from home. Granite counters and teak cabinets and an open layout make it a retreat to rest after a long day sightseeing. The backyard is surrounded by an Ohia forest, creating a place of serenity and privacy while cooling off in the in- ground pool. In the evening light up a fire in the outdoor fire pit and enjoy roasting marshmallows while gazing at the stars.

The home is located just 2 blocks from the ocean, where you can walk along the cliffs and trails. In the winter whale watching on the cliffs is a popular local past time.

The nearby historic towns of Kea`au and Pahoa both have restaurants, grocery stores and farmers markets. The snorkeling areas in Kapoho, the hot ponds and the lava viewing area in Kalapana are all with in 20-30 minutes from the home.

The open layout and design of the home makes it accessible for wheel chair guests.”

. The master suite opens out in onto the lanai surrounding the pool. It has a private bathroom and shower. The Kingsize bed has a Vera Wang memory Foam Mattress. You''ll want to lounge in bed all day. The two additional bedrooms share a full bath, one bedroom has a queensize bed and the other a full size bed. Plenty of room to share with friends and family. This is a nonsmoking home.

Just 15-20 minutes away from the Kalapana Lava Viewing area.

This home is NOT to be rented for parties, large gatherings, family reunions etc.. There is a maximum of 6 people including children allowed in the home. The home is perfect for romantic getaways, family vacations.

Please note Hawaii is in the tropics. We have bugs, geckos, and the Big Island has coqui frogs whose mating call can be heard at night.

About Maureen Gapp

We have lived on the Big island for over 25 years and raised our family here.

We live just down the street and absolutely love this beautiful secluded area. Kola Point is an amazing place. Close enough to all the places to see but, far enough away to enjoy the serenity of the Big Island

Maureen Gapp purchased this house in 2010

Why Maureen Gapp chose Keaau

The privacy is important as well as being in the 'sun belt'. This lot was so unique as it backed up to a beautiful forest of Ohia. The natural wall prevents any neighbors from being behind us, so the privacy is amazing.

What makes this house unique

Peace and tranquility. My favorite thing to do is to light a campfire and watch the stars. The area is mostly vacation homes and private homes so it's great to be able to walk or bike around without any traffic.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It is always such a great pleasure when renting a vacation resort to find that it exceeds expectations. We had a wonderful time on the Hilo side of the island and your home is part of our enjoyment. Nice, clean, very spacious, warm pool, we have fond memories of our trip to the Big Island thanks to the comfort of your home. Regards, Eric & family

Magical Spot in the Rainforest

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about this beautiful house. The kitchen is as well appointed as my own including sharp knives, what a treat! The pool is salt water, clean and the perfect temperature. The house clean beyond my wildest imaginings, with many towels, nice sheets and comfortable beds. Frankly, it was hard to leave and go explore the island. The house is located in a perfect spot not far from the attractions in the area. Don't miss Uncle Robert's farmers market, fun, music, vendors and local produce. We spent a lot of time at the hot pools, tide flats and volcano national parks. We will be back, hopefully Maureen will let us come. Thank you for the wonderful, relaxing stay. Home away from home

  • 4 of 5

Nice home centered between things to do on Hilo side. Kids enjoyed the pool daily. Well stocked with everything we needed nice home. Not use to not having AC but we made the best of it and did cool off over night and enjoyed falling asleep listening to the frogs and the evening showers. Zoo @ 20 min away small but nice little place to kill time. Volcanoes . Lava look out . Water falls and farmers markets. All easy to get to from home.

Owner's Response: Aloha glad you enjoyed your stay. Sorry you felt that we only deserved 4 stars. My VRBO site does not list AC as an amenity. There are many fans and windows to keep the home cool. AC is rare on our side as we enjoy fabulous trade winds most of the year. The home had been closed up for two days before you arrived but as you noted it cooled off as soon as the windows were opened. Hope you get a chance to come back and visit the Big Island again in the future. Aloha Maureen

Fantastic Big Island Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Loved this property! The pool is fantastic to have when you just want to cool off and relax around the house. The house is nicely appointed and well stocked with utensils and supplies. The gas grille was nice and allowed us to stay in for some great meals. Really enjoyed having a garage to put the car in and having a washer and dryer allowed me to head home with all clean clothes for the first time in...ever. Would strongly recommend this property. It is a great value.

This Home Excels In Every Way

  • 5 of 5

From my very first contact with Maureen I knew that my rental experience in Hawaii would be all business and that makes going through the process easy. I find that each time I book this home it's a pleasure to email Maureen and begin my vacation adventure. The home is always in exceptional order. The lawn in the back of the yard is manicured and beautiful. The pool water is clear and well maintained and that takes someone tending to it every week. Keeping in mind that you are in a tropical arena and securing the kitchen before going to bed is good enough not to experience but one stray bug here or there. I've not seen one on any occasion that I've been there. The home is always cool in the evenings and pleasant during the day. The pool has steps rather than a ladder and what I enjoy is it's deep enough to get in a good work-out without feeling like I'm splashing around in a 'kiddy' pool.

I've read what others have to say and there isn't too much more to add to an already long list of positive attributes. Mahalo Maureen for everything.

Private home, private pool, quiet, restful oasis after a days of sightseeing, great location!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed at this lovely home for one week after spending a week on Maui. Maureen was very pleasant and friendly to deal with, and the rental experience couldn't have been easier or more secure. What can I say, this house surpassed our expectations. It has a very well-appointed kitchen, so much so that we only went out to eat one time during our entire stay. There were only two of us, but there would have been plenty of room for our family of five to spread out.

It was exceptionally clean, comfortable and quiet.

Windows were open all the time as there is no A/C, but at night time, the Coqui frogs lulled us to sleep, which I found to be comforting after listening to a week of non-stop crowing roosters at the Maui house!

The bed in the master bedroom was heavenly to sleep in.

We were outside by or in the pool while we were at the house every single day. It is a salt water pool, never been in one before, it was amazing. A couple of days, we were literally out there all day long and got the sunburns to prove it. The water was the perfect temperature, such a treat for us Michiganders and we really appreciated it.

This home was in a good location, close to Volcano National Park (which is a must-see). Drove the length of Chain of Craters drive. We went to Rainbow Falls, Hapuna Beach to see a sunset (the drive alone was spectacular), Punalu'u black sand beach and saw sea turtles sunning themselves, also took in a little shopping in downtown Hilo, which was charming. We took a boat ride to see the lava flow from Kilauea with Captain Shane from Lava Ocean Tours. It was one of the coolest things EVER!!

Maureen has generously provided a copy of Hawaii Revealed for the use of her guests and I highly recommend using it during your stay. That's how we found out about the Lava Boat and the Hilo Burger Joint.

On our last day of our Hawaii vacation, we were truly sad to leave. I'm not even kidding, there were some tears. I'm sure we will be back, I've got to bring my hubby here, he would absolutely love the big island.

Maureen, I can't even put into words how perfect this vacation was and thank you so much for being a part of our Hawaii experience by letting us stay in your lovely home. You are a most gracious hostess...Mahalo!
