Furnished Cottage in Historic Silver City

Bedrooms 1
Space 950 sq. ft.
Property type cottage

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

The Carriage House Cottage is nestled behind the David Abraham House, one of Silver City's premier historic homes, owned by Jim & Tricia Reynolds. The Carriage House was built around 1917 and was indeed originally a carriage house with attached servants' quarters. Carriage House Cottage was remodeled in 2000 as a retirement cottage and is furnished with may family antiques and memorabilia. Some elements of the original carriage house are still in evidence, both in the interior and on the exterior of the Cottage.

The Cottage is both cozy and functional. Guests feel right at home from the moment they walk into the Cottage. This welcoming vacation rental is in a quiet, restful area of a historic part of Silver City.

The Cottage has it's own patio with parking directly in front of it. Next to the Cottage is a fruit orchard and well as a grape arbor. For privacy the back portion of the property is surrounded by a brick wall.

It is located within easy walking distance of historic downtown Silver City with all its' unique antique shops, art galleries, restaurants and shops.

About Tricia Reynolds

My name is Tricia Reynolds and together with my husband Jim and our three children we live in a historic old home in Silver City, NM. This home, the David Abraham House, has been in Jim's family since 1962. I have always had a gift for hospitality and love having people stay and meeting new people. When Carriage House Cottage was no longer needed by my husband's father, we decided to turn it into a vacation rental - and I found my vocation. Having traveled a lot, I am able to relate on many levels with most of our guests. We are friendly and caring to our guests, and go out of our way to make your stay with us a memorable one.

Tricia Reynolds purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Tricia Reynolds chose New Mexico

We inherited the home we live in and Carriage House Cottage (formerly a carriage house) came with the property. Having said that, we choose to live in the older, historic part of Silver City because we love the location and would have chosen a property here had \we been in the market.

What makes this cottage unique

It is quiet and peaceful here and fairly secluded. It is also a convenient distance to where the 'action' is in downtown Silver City. Most guest park their vehicles and walk most places. We enjoy walking in this neighborhood and seeing the older, historic homes that predominate the area.

Silver City is know as a historic location. Carriage House Cottage is located within walking distance of the historic downtown with its many antique shops, coffee shops ad much more.

Cool Town, Comfortable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were only in Silver City for a couple of days and Patricia made our stay easy. The furnishings in the Cottage are a bit dated, but it was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. The wifi and the shower worked great, and the kitchen was fully equipped. My wife enjoyed hot tub; I enjoyed the peace and quiet. It's a short walk to the University and the main street that has a number of places to eat, drink and shop. We also want to recommend the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Thanks, Patricia!

Pluses and Minuses

  • 4 of 5

The carriage cottage definitely had its strong features and its weak features. We liked the location because it was an easy walk to downtown Silver City. Parking for it was off-street and secure. Most of all we found that inside and out the setting was sunny and bright. Lots of windows assured a cheerful sitting room with a large flat screen TV that had great channel selection with Direct TV. A comfortable sofa and an upholstered chair were all my wife and I needed. An additional upholstered chair was available in the bedroom. The dining room table was adequate for four although a couple of the chairs are wobbly and need repair. The bedroom was large and fully carpeted with more than sufficient closet and dresser space. We only used the king bed. It had a memory foam type mattress which we thought was very comfortable. The queen bed had what seemed to be a springy yet firm standard mattress. The single bath had plenty of hot water . The hot water was quick to arrive due to the proximity of the electric water heater. The shower head was not a water saver type so you got LOTS of water. The controls were a bit loosey-goosey but by the second day we found it was not a problem. The electric heat, individually controlled by room thermostats, was quite efficient when needed.

There were some things that could easily be done to improve the cottage. The wrought iron outdoor seating and table was functional at best but it was not particularly comfortable. More often than not outdoor grills at house rentals are not maintained. But, they are at least propane grills. This was a simple charcoal grill and it was not worth making an effort to clean. Since our stay was a month, we used the kitchen a lot. A simple upgrade to some basic but fresh cutlery and table settings would be helpful. Plates, cups and bowls were a collection of odd, flowery, non-microwave safe stuff. Pots and pans in most instances were at best 30 years old and items that had Teflon were very worn. There was not a single knife that would slice into a loaf of Diane's Bakery bread. Little here would be a major expense to improve.

Shiela was pleasant to chat with but, for the most part, she left us to ourselves. So, in summary, the pluses outweighed the minuses but a little investment could make things better.

My family and I had a wonderful stay. Once we made contact, everything was taken care of and the visit could not have been better. We would recommend the guest house to anyone looking for lodging in Silver City.

We stay at the cottage for four nights. The place was perfect for us. We had our dog and he was extremely comfortable there. Tricia was very nice and showed us everything we needed. The place was very clean and comfortable for us to spend our nights relaxing.

Wonderful accommodations

  • 5 of 5

The property is the carriage house behind the owner's home. It was clean, spacious enough for our family of five, and just a few blocks from the college and from the beautiful downtown area. Sitting in the hot tub and gazing at the stars made for relaxing nights. The owners were very friendly and attentive, though left us in privacy unless called upon. We plan to stay here whenever we are in Silver City. Highly recommended.

Trisha and Jim: Thanks for you wonderful NM hospitality. We loved the Carriage House. Found it pristine, cozy, spacious and very comfortabe. The location is perfect: withing walking distance to downtown...and what at neat, funky downtown! Multiple and lovely art gallery/craft shops, nice restaurnts and cafes, beautiful artwork/designs on the stores and very friendly people. The visitor center is very close by with lots of help/suggestions. Its just short trip for groceries and larger stores. The Gila National Forest is very close with awesome hiking and mt biking stunning scenery. Also, want to thank Nicole for her excellent laundry service. We hope to be back again.
