Phenomenal location: this lower-floor duplex is close to historic downtown Staunton - we were able to walk just about everywhere really quickly and easily, which was wonderful. Also close to neat neighborhoods with incredibly beautiful houses, and MBU campus: many good dog-walking spots. The yard is big and safely fenced, overlooked by a patio; my dog enjoyed lying in the sun! Kitchen is well-stocked, as is everything else: we were warm, but there were blankets and extra towels, which is nice. We didn't need it, but I liked that there was coffee and tea to use! We were very lucky with our upstairs neighbors, who were mostly quiet. We would definitely stay here again, it was excellent.

A great spot!

We stayed here with our two kids (age 2 and 3) and would stay again! The apartment was incredibly clean with plenty of space and everything we needed. We sleep with white noise machines and had no issues with noise at all. Check in and parking was easy and the hosts were very responsive.

Fun girls trip

The Hunker Down is a great place to stay. We made the trip for antiquing in Verona. This house is clean and cozy. It is close to downtown Staunton with lots of places to eat and shop. Kathy's was a great breakfast spot!

Excellent with pet.

It's hard to find a place so well kept and clean that allows pets. This was a real find and allowed some family members who couldn't otherwise attend our reunion to be there. Nice fenced yard.

Hunker Down stay

The property was delightful, spacious, sparkling clean and there were so many extra touches, from mints on the pillow to dog bowls and towels provided for our pet! Right in the heart of town, with a great backyard our dog could run around in. I'd highly recommend it, whether you have a pet or not, I was super impressed.

We hunkered down

Cute little bungalow! We very much enjoyed this place. A fenced back yard for our little dogs was the cherry on top! The weather was not great for outdoor activity, so we suggest taking the Virginia Railway Train ride. The sights of the farms and rolling hills were lovely. The lunch included with the ride was quite good.

Staunton Weekend

This property is very clean, up-to-date and in a good location for walking to restaurants, etc. The upstairs rental was not distracting as some others mention. You can hear a little noise from walking but that's it. Fenced yard is nice if you have pets.

definitely heed the reviews about the upstairs potentially being loud

The property and location were great. The description stating that the upstairs is also a rental and can have noise is definitely true and needs to be considered. The upstairs was rented during our stay and it sounded like a herd of elephants stomping through the builiding between midnight and 2am on our only night there. Not sure I would do it again.

Birthday weekend with friend

Excellent two night night stay in this charming apartment in Staunton and communication with the owners was exceptional. It is a “basement” unit but because this historic home was built on a significant back-cut there is an amazing amount of natural light. Clean, comfortable and amenity-filled, I would definitely stay here again. The only thing I would caution future guests is that the stairs down to the backyard-entry are fairly steep and might be an issue for some older guests.

Awful

Iam writing to share the disappointing experience on October 25, 2024 at VRBO property Property # 3181902 and referred to as “Hunker-down.” First of all we were misled by this listing. The listing shows a picture of an entire house and states “entire home”. The rental was actually the finished partial basement on the lower floor. While it is true if you read the entire listing this is disclosed, it should be prominent as when we reserved the property we were expecting an entire home as advertised. Given we already had fully paid the rental cost and it was non-refundable, we went ahead and travelled to Staunton and checked in. Right away, we were bothered by the loud footsteps above us, as the main floor of the house was also being rented. This incessant noise continued into the night and started again early the next morning. To be clear, it is not the fault of the people on the upper floor, the house is quite old and when the basement was renovated, it is obvious that no soundproofing or other structural separation was installed. While a very loud air purifier was able to mask some of the noise--the presence of which is quite telling that the owner is well aware of the noise issue—we still slept very poorly. The next morning we left and returned home, as given some health concerns we cannot have poor sleep two nights in a row. We demand that our second night be reimbursed.

As noted in the listing, Hunker Down is the lower-level unit of the home, and the upstairs is a separate rental. We strive to be transparent, but we’ll review our listing to ensure this detail is as clear as possible. We totally get how disruptive noise can be, especially in an older home, and we’re sorry it impacted your stay. We do have quiet hours in place that we ask all guests to follow. The apartment should be listed as apartment and not entire house. The apartment was very clean and easy to access. There’s plenty of food and bars to go to in immediate area. The downside to this is if there are people occupying upstairs you WILL hear them and not by a little bit either. Also there is only ONE way in and ONE way out which is a safety hazard considering if something were to happen in the kitchen people would essentially be trapped. The parking pass was expired. Besides that it was a decent stay.
