Serenity on Storm Mountain

  • 5 of 5

My adult daughter and I visited from south/centralTexas to attend a family wedding. Instead of staying in the hotel, we decided to enhance our Colorado experience by booking this perfect, peaceful cabin. Everything I mention below is well explained in the VRBO/Homeway description. There were no surprises.

There is no cell service -- not only at the cabin, but just about all the way up the mountain -- so make sure you have a good car navigation system (or print out directions) and have the password and key box code written down. You won't be able to use Google Maps or Waze on your phone. This is part of what was endearing about the place! Going up or down the mountain after dark was scary like a Stephen King novel (!), but it was a fun adventure.

The cabin was exactly as described in the listing. One bedroom with a queen-size (?) bed. One bathroom with shower. Fully-equipped kitchen. Bring drinking water.

There is no television signal, cable or satellite dish. Just a whole bunch of old movies on VHS. The WiFi was spotty and slow. But we didn't go there to get broadband. Again, these are the things that make the cabin all the more endearing.

We hiked Devil's Backbone trail one day and saw wildlife and beautiful rock formations. The trail head is very near. It was challenging for me because of the altitude, but it was not a difficult trail.

The entire trip was wonderful. Thank you, Julie, for welcoming us to your cabin. :)

Remote and serene.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our short stay at this remote location and would have liked it to have been longer. If you want quiet away from the constant sound of city life this is the place for you. The scenery is beautiful, the cabin was clean, directions were spot on and communication was smooth with the owner. The home is equipped with everything you need except personal hygiene items and food and there was even some of that in the pantry from previous occupants. Take the owners advice (and ours) the cinnamon rolls at Glen Haven General Store were amazing and worth the short 10 min drive!

Peaceful Escape

  • 4 of 5

If you're looking for a high-end fancy retreat this is not your place. However, if you want a cozy place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life this just might be where you should go. The cabin was a nice escape from our busy every day lives. While there we saw deer, turkey, and various birds from the front deck. The sunrise is also amazing. Our only real complaint was not with the cabin at all but the road to the cabin. It is a 2 mile mostly dirt road that is extremely steep and extremely windy with numerous switchbacks. We drove a dually pickup truck so navigating with oncoming traffic proved challenging at times. The first night we arrived it was already dark and my husband absolutely refused to travel it again in the dark after that. While the road is challenging with large vehicles it is doable. A four-wheel drive will be required during winter months. Just something to keep in mind as you are planning.

Quaint, cozy, comfortable (for 2) cabin off the beaten path

  • 4 of 5

Julie was quick to respond to our inquiries and we enjoyed our stay at the cabin. The cabin is just as described (except the laundry area was locked, which didn't matter to us since we were only there 5 days). Those who are looking for a luxurious condo experience would find it a bit rustic, but it suited our needs just fine. The privacy is nice and the view is pretty, and we enjoyed grilling on the nice gas grill and eating out on the deck. We found the bed to be nice and comfortable. There is plenty of room and provisions for 2 people. Adding any more people would require the use of the sofa-bed and folding chairs (which are provided) for eating at the indoor table, and though I can't remember for sure, you might run short on kitchen utensils. One minor inconvenience was that we were there during an abnormally warm spell and the single window AC unit in the living area did not adequately cool the bedroom at times so we had to run the bedroom ceiling fan which, though not any louder than your typical ceiling fan, was noisy enough to interrupt my sleep at times (unfortunately I'm a very light sleeper). Hopefully this would not be a problem to most people most of the time. The water is from a cistern so those who like long showers need to conserve a bit (it may be that cisterns are common in rural Colorado mountain communities?). The water is fine, but since it may taste a bit stale for drinking, they kindly provided a 5-gallon container of drinking water which was plenty for us. You do have to drive 4 miles (13 minutes) up an occasionally steep dirt road to get there and some other reviews had us a little scared about that, but aside from the dust the road is not bad or scary and it is plenty wide enough for 2 cars to pass, and our little (low ground clearance) Mazda3 handled it fine. I can't say I'd want to try it in bad weather though. It did take us 40-45 minutes to get to the RMNP entrance, but the drive through the Big Thompson Canyon is beautiful and the time passes quickly. However if your time is limited and you want easy access to RMNP, you might want to get a place on the west side of Estes Park instead. But if you are looking for a nice quiet place with a taste of rural Colorado life along with your RMNP/Estes Park experience and you don't mind the drive, this is a great place to stay.

Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a 5-star resort this would not be your choice. But if you want CLEAN, COMFORTABLE, GREAT LOCATION...go for it! The cabin was clean and ready for our week when we arrived. Julie's directions were spot on and I recommend following them rather than Mapquest. The road to the cabin is narrow, but only one time was someone aggressive about getting past us. Everyone else scooted over and waved as we passed each other. The kitchen had everything we needed. We used the grill and ate on the deck several times. It was peaceful and the surroundings are beautiful. You can see two other cabins from the deck and there is a road running by it, but none of that was disruptive. The only time there was much noise in the area was one evening when kids (I think kids anyway) down the road ran their 4-wheelers for quite a while.

At least twice every day turkeys wandered through the yard and were fun to watch. We saw mule deer come out of the woods in the evening and watched them graze. And the hummingbirds battled at the feeder.

We were conservative with the running/cistern water and apparently were fine. The 5 gallon drinking water lasted the week without a problem We bought a six-pack of bottled water to take hiking and driving and refilled the bottles at the cabin.

Rocky Mountain NP was our main destination and the park was beautiful. We spent an afternoon in Estes Park and had a late lunch at Smokin' Dave's BBQ (highly recommended). We also enjoyed drives along nearby county roads, the cinnamon rolls at Glen Haven General Store (oh my, so good), and the drive up to and along Cache la Poudre River.

All in all - 5 star cabin and 5 star place for a vacation.

A great home base

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the cabin, it was such a great location but still secluded. We liked the little adventure getting up & down Storm Mountain and that we were happy that we weren't staying somewhere right along the highway. We didn't cook at all but the kitchen had just about everything we would have needed. Also, the VHS collection was great!
