About Steve and Keala Zoll

Aloha! We are local residents of Hawai'i, born and raised. Being brought up with animals and coming from a ranching family, it is great to offer the lifestyle that we have lived. This cottage was built for family and friends to visit. Once our friends stayed at Pu'u Moi, we had offers from others who wanted the same experience of the country life, Hawaiian style. Our land has much to offer from green pastures, horses, chickens , sheep, little smiling dogs and waterfalls to rambutan orchids and endless mornings of beautiful sunrises.

Steve and Keala Zoll purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Steve and Keala Zoll chose Papaikou

This cottage was built for our mother to live in, and then we used it for family and friends to use when they would visit us in Hawai`i.

What makes this cottage unique

Being able to stay at this cottage is unique as it is surrounded by pasture land, animals, walking distance to a natural waterfall and pond, gated and no neighbors other than our home which is on the same property. We offer assistance as need to those staying in the cottage, and have respect for privacy as well.

Wonderful choice

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was quaint, peaceful, well-equipped, and the views were stunning. Steve helped us navigate our way as we arrived in the dark, then greeted us the next day and was very pleasant. We were out and about during the day for most of our time here, and so my only regret was that we didn't spend more time sitting on the front porch swing. The cottage was an excellent choice for our 25th wedding anniversary trip.

Great spot on "Big Island"

  • 4 of 5

Great relaxing place. Loved the grounds and animals (especially the dogs). The private waterfall was a pleasant surprise. Steve and Keala and family are great hosts.

Hope to return to this "slice of paradise" soon

Perfectly situated and sweet cottage

  • 5 of 5

Out in the country living yet still close to town and easy drive to all the great sites. We've been to Hilo half a dozen time and this has been one of our most convenient stay. The cottage itself was fully stocked. The on-site mini-farm and waterfall were great pluses. After a long day of site-seeing, sitting on the swing with the gorgeous ocean view is what good living is all about. Mahalo to the Owners for sharing their splice of heaven!

OAK

As my daughter would say this is a One of A Kind place! My family of four including 2 daughters ages 11 & 14 have used VRBO to travel the world, and in regards to uniqueness, beauty, cost, and hospitality, you cannot beat Pu'u Moi.

Our 5th time on the Big Island, we decided this trip to stay near the cottage(10 nights) as much as possible. 10 minutes north of Hilo. Watch for turn off- check ahead of time on google earth. Gated on 20 some acres, beautiful cottage, very clean, cozy, nicely decorated, filled with everything you need. Comfy bed on main floor, in loft a two person futon on floor; the owners can also supply a single fold-up futon which our youngest used. We slept great!

Kitchen: full fridge, very hot stove/oven, disposal, coffee maker, plenty of utensils/cooking supplies/spices/oil etc.. The bathroom- pretty tiled shower with unlimited hot water and stacked washer-dryer. Plenty of towels, bathrobes, beach stuff, charcoal bbq, hose to rinse your shoes/feet off, covered parking, beautiful lanai with swing, chairs, table; back and side porches.

Wood floors, TV/cable- sometimes need to unplug and reset the satellite. WIFI worked. Ceiling fan, no air but we were never hot. The grounds: green, lush and flowered- ocean view! You have use of the owners' pool and hot tub(heated 5:30-7:30PM). The pool, simply gorgeous!

Their guidebook gives tons of info: Follow short or long trails past fruit trees to the amazing private waterfall. We swam there and the pool everyday even at night. It's cool and over my head when near the falls. (Just supervise the kids there, pool and on the loft ladder.) Of note, we did not see mosquitoes our whole stay?! Lots of geckos, small flies if you visit Grandma Pudding's horses next door. She was incredibly generous. She also has sheep, dogs, chickens and a great aloha spirit!

You will hear Coqui frogs at night and roosters. The cutest dogs ever will visit you. Drive slowly in/out! You're also on the east side of the island and rain happens, mostly light sometimes torrential. We had more sun than rain. We visited quaint Hilo for shops/market/food/theatre; volcano/lava tube/hikes; beach(our favorite Mauna Kea)

The owners: Keala, was on the mainland, but Steve, her husband, and one of their daughters were super to us. Whatever advice they give, do. They know all the local spots. They also have a rental in Volcano. Our sincerest thanks for your kindness, see you again soon, Aloha!
