Aloha! We are local residents of Hawai'i, born and raised. Being brought up with animals and coming from a ranching family, it is great to offer the lifestyle that we have lived. This cottage was built for family and friends to visit. Once our friends stayed at Pu'u Moi, we had offers from others who wanted the same experience of the country life, Hawaiian style. Our land has much to offer from green pastures, horses, chickens , sheep, little smiling dogs and waterfalls to rambutan orchids and endless mornings of beautiful sunrises.
Steve and Keala Zoll purchased this cottage in 2003
This cottage was built for our mother to live in, and then we used it for family and friends to use when they would visit us in Hawai`i.
Being able to stay at this cottage is unique as it is surrounded by pasture land, animals, walking distance to a natural waterfall and pond, gated and no neighbors other than our home which is on the same property. We offer assistance as need to those staying in the cottage, and have respect for privacy as well.
Thank you for the great stay! The cottage was nice and cozy. Our children enjoyed the swim in the pool! Fantastic views, sunrise was spectacular even in the rain! Beautiful water fall, such a treat to see. Kids liked seeing all of the animals. Thank you. Leina and Keith
The owners are extra nice and even had a Christmas tree for us. The property was beautiful, the cottage charming and hot tub great! If we return to Hilo I would definitely want to stay there!!
We truly enjoyed the time we spent here. It was perfectly situated to see all of the sights on the east side of the island. I would highly recommend.
Absolutely loved the Pu'u Moi Country Cottage. The only bummer is that our stay was only 2 nights and we did not get to spend nearly enough time on the property or in this cottage! It is charming, sweet, great comfy "home touches" and the thick warm cozy bathrobes were just the cherry on top! The owners obviously take great pride in this place and it shows. We did not get to meet them but I'm sure they must be wonderful because their place is so well maintained and sweet. This time we were there to see the lava -- next time I'm booking a stay JUST to stay at Pu'u Moi Country Cottage!
We came back for a second stay and plan to return in the future. This property is outstanding. The cottage is simple, clean, and fully equipped with everything we required. There is also no need to pack bulky beach towels or bathrobes for your visit here because they are included. The front porch view of the wide blue ocean is framed beautifully by landscaped grounds filled with colorful flowers, fruit trees, palms, horses, goats, roosters, and rolling emerald green pasture lands. The luxury of having an infinity edged swimming pool and relaxing hot tub at your disposal is but another highlight of this vacation paradise. There is a natural waterfall and pond to bathe in if you choose to take the scenic and easy hike to reach it. If you come here, you'll wonder why you should leave, but if you must, Hilo is about an 8 minute drive down the road. We still miss the croaking of the coqui frogs serenading us to sleep every night and the crows of the roosters waking us up each morning in time to catch the sunrise. We are dog lovers and this property comes with the added bonus of overseers Zippy, Spud, and Petie, three friendly little dogs who faithfully stopped by every morning to share some of our breakfast with us, The location is a good one for visiting all parts of the island because of its proximity to the saddle road and the belt highway.
A cute little cottage on the owners' property. A neighboring barn where the family is actively caring for horses. The property is very well taken care of - even the hike through the pasture was recently cut/mowed. A great home base for a couple, or two that want to tour the Big Island and have a cozy place to relax at night either at the kitchen table or on the front lanai (both a swing and a rocking chair, nice!!).
Just a fantastic experience - just ten minutes north of downtown Hilo!
It's pretty close to Mauna Kea - we went stargazing at night (open til 10pm). Only bad thing was the condition of saddle road. VERY rough where it was under construction - it was gravel, not asphalt. You do not need 4WD, just have to take it slow.
I couldn't have made a better choice in Hilo! The cottage is quintessential old Hawaiian plantation architecture and is set off by itself on picturesque farmland complete with horses, sheep, and views to the ocean. It is spacious, very clean and comfortably decorated, and has lovely, high-quality bedding and towels. The owner is kind and unobtrusive, and her friendly, small dogs are a sweet greeting party. It's an easy 10 minute drive into Hilo and located very close to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and Akaka Falls (both of which are must-see sights). I truly felt sorry for all the folks who settled for generic hotel accommodations or all the other VRBO choices which couldn't possibly measure up to this great find.
