Why J.D. chose San Diego

I bought in this location because I love downtown San Diego. This home was selected because it is one of the few single family homes downtown. That meant I could paint it bright green and rent it weekly without the worry of a home owner's association. The interesting style of these homes won numerous awards for the builder. It features tilt up concrete construction. I also liked the fact that the garage is attached and I do not have to go through a public elevator to get into the unit.

What makes this house unique

Attached garage single family home not a condo, there is no home association to worry about. Every condo association in downtown prohibits vacation rentals of less 30 days, people do it anyway but my tenants do not have that worry.

Didn't want to leave . . .

AMAZING! We spent 10 days at the property . . . it felt like home. Loved the in-the-city location, the super-easy access to freeways (down the block, north or east, and you're there). Walking distance to markets and restaurants. Property owner was very responsive via text--checking in to make sure things were okay and answering any questions within minutes. We came to San Diego with our son's baseball team, and soon discovered we were one of the few families that had a condo with air conditioning (lucky us!). As San Diego was experiencing a mini-heat wave, the little extra cooling was nice after a day in the sun. There are quiet/efficient ceiling fans in the bedrooms also. Pretty much everything you need is in this super-clean, super classy, "industrial-decorated" condo. My teenaged son loved having his own room & TV downstairs, and we loved the master suite with the fancy shower and outdoor balcony (after grilling steaks, I have serious grill-envy) . Uber drivers are 1-3 minutes away, and you are in easy walking distance to Petco & Gaslamp Quarter. WIFI worked flawlessly, as did the washer/dryer and the printer to grab those last minute boarding passes. Other reviewers pointed out the city noise and the homeless people. Yes, to both, but you ARE in the city. The condo owner has done a good job with reducing noise (and provides earplugs if you want even more quiet) and we found the homeless population to be pretty much a non-event (they didn't approach us or harass us in any way). As far as noise, I was glad I wasn't in a hotel--no elevator dings, no people chatting in the hallways, no loud televisions from the next room. When inside of this condo you feel like you don't have a single neighbor. ZERO sound from other residents. We drove a smaller SUV and didn't have any problems getting it into the garage. Glad to have a backup camera, though, especially when arriving at night. Highly recommended! If we ever return to San Diego (and I suspect we will)--we will be back!

Great style in San Diego

Having rented different properties in San Diego for over 8 years, this is the most stylish and attractive we have experienced. The furnishings and decorations create both a comfortable and fun environment. It's above average in almost every way and overall a positive experience.

The only two issues is that the East Village neighborhood has a higher homeless population than others we have stayed in (such as Little Italy and the Gaslamp). One night we had a homeless man sitting on the steps moaning & groaning which could be heard in every bedroom at 3am. Second, the apartment has signs everywhere telling you not to use the balcony or play music after 10pm, to use the towelettes and not the towels, and a binder full of house rules. Assumably, this is because some past renters have not been thoughtful, but it seemed a bit stern and contrasted to the fun feeling of the property.

Owner's Response: I am pleased the home was the most attractive and stylish home you have experienced. I am disappointed anytime a guest does not have a five start experience. To address your concerns. I am sorry you were awaken by a homeless person at 3 am. It is unfortunate problem in all of downtown like every other major city. The problem is not unique to the area of the home. The neighbors surrounding the home are vigilant about using local services to keep them off our block. I find there are generally less homeless around the home than other areas because they know they are not welcome. Your experience was unfortunate but I believe an exception rather than the norm. I apologize if the signs/ rules distracted from your experience. The rules are clearly stated about noise etc. in the listing. I put the reminders up in an effort to avoid issues. The city is looking to crackdown on vacation rentals even if that was not the case I want to be good neighbor to the community. The binder does have rules in it but the majority of the binder has detailed information with photos on how to use everything in the home. The note about not using bath towels to remove makeup is a fair request since I provide both makeup remover wipes and washcloths. I have had bachelorette parties ruin every bath towel in the home. I hope this provides some insights into your concerns. Thank you again for renting the home and taking the time to write the review.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL

My husband and I and two kids (ages 15 & 17) stayed eight nights. We all Loved It. The home was clean and updated. The showers and shower head pressure were great. Beds were good with plenty of pillows. Had plenty of supplies - no need to worry about anything. Full size washer and dryer with detergent and dryer sheets.

Great Location with easy access to so many different places. We did a lot of walking - really enjoyed being able to walk around. Nice walk to Petco Park and Seaport Village. My husband and kids went around the corner to the Dog Haus for a quick lunch or dinner (good hot dogs, sausages).

Great Response from the owner/JD. I asked a question before we arrived and he was responsive and helpful. On arrival, I just wanted to let him know there was a slight issue with a blind on the main level not opening and closing and he immediately responded asking if he should send someone out to fix it. I said no need, we would see if light was too bright at night. The next day - he checked in and wanted to make sure the blind wasn't an issue. It was definitely not an issue - it was just a side blind.

As stated, this home is in 'city' which does have noise - emergency vehicles, dump trucks, load motorcycles... but the white noise machines were fantastic and the windows did block most of the noise. We are from a rural town in CT and I am a light sleeper and I didn't consider the noise to be an issue. Would definitely recommend this property.

This property was Fantastic and I was very happy. If a friend or co-worker of mine knew I gave this five starts - they would be like WOW - have to stay there. I have very high expectations and very demanding. I have never given a review on VRBO, TripAdvisor, or Yelp (although I do always read the comments). We have rented boats, traveled to Hawaii, etc... and I can always find 'something' that I wasn't thrilled about. When I am on vacation and paying for something - I expect great service. Even if everybody else likes it, I have never been Completely satisfied... but I felt this home in San Diego was great. The Location was Fantastic and I could tell the owner really put effort into this home.

Great Place, Great Location

My wife and I celebrated our 20th anniversary in San Diego. Cleverly, we chose this place to stay. It is close to everything that we wanted to see: harbor tour, Midway museum and zoo.

The video on parking was a bit intimidating, but with my wife's help I aced it on the first try. We never used our car after that. Between walking and Uber we didn't need the car. FWIW, our Uber rides were all about $5. The one time we parked cost us $13.

The beds were very comfortable. The interior was unique, but pleasant. Obviously it is quite modern, but had character and did not come off as cold. FWIW, we were out and about so we didn't spend all that much time in the house.

There were ample instructions on appliances and features. The upstairs shower has instructions in the shower! They're needed, but not hard to follow. For those of you, like us, with boring conventional showers, this shower is a treat.

The Gaslamp Quarter has many, many restaurants. Being new to SD, we used Opentable to find Donovan's which was a terrific experience.

My wife cooked a couple of dinners and reported that the everything she needed was there. She loved the gas stove, BTW.

Two notes of caution: 1) there are three floors which means there is a fair amount of stair climbing; and 2) the location is right where a lot is happening so it's noisy. Neither issue would stop us from renting the place again.

I suspect we will do just that.

Wonderful place to stay for Downtown

We stayed 5 days and it was our base for exploring Gaslamp, downtown, Balboa Park and the waterfront.

Some coffee shops within a block or two to help start the morning.

The home has an industrial touch about it and is a wonderful place to stay.

Everything was considered to make out stay go smooth - utensils, bags, some detergent etc.

There was no need to go to the store except for food.

JD was very helpful with clear instructions and answered all queries very quickly.
