o Located on Hat (Gedney) Island, a private island community 5 miles from Everett (Port Gardner), approximately 30 minutes North of Seattle. This no-bank waterfront house has breathtaking 180' views of Whidbey Island, Camano Island, Puget Sound and Olympic mountains with a private marina, rated nine-hole golf course, and tennis court. Private foot ferry access (note there is no ferry service on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays), no pavement, and a lack of commercial activity on the island make for an incredibly peaceful get-away from the hustle and bustle
You can borrow our island transportation for free, so all logistics are taken care of once you leave Everett on the ferry.
o This vacation house consists of two wings connected by a huge Tigerwood deck and awnings. Construction was completed in 2009. The two-story bedroom wing has four bedrooms, two with private balconies and the others also open directly onto the deck. ALL bedrooms have ocean views. Three bedrooms have queen beds, and one has bunk-beds. [Please note that guests are asked to leave beds remade with clean linens before departure.] The glass enclosed kitchen/dining/living area has large sliding doors, providing great views whether open or closed.
o The house is fully equipped for your comfort and convenience. Amenities include a wood-burning stove/fireplace, stereo with CD player and Aux.cable, TV with DVD player, games, puzzles, books, and kites. Fully appointed gourmet kitchen of bamboo cabinetry, granite counter tops and stainless appliances also looks out over the ocean. Laundry facilities in sleeping wing. Duvet covered down comforters for all seasons and top quality mattresses. Great cell coverage. Internet not provided; we recommend a cell modem if you need to connect while on vacation.
o There are many things to do such as kayaking, walking, swimming, paddle boarding, crabbing, clamming, scuba diving, golfing, beach combing, small boating, berry picking or just relaxing with a good book and enjoying the eagles and sunsets.
o This peaceful natural setting is a great place for a half week or full week long vacation for all seasons. Minimum rental June 15 to September 15 is 3 nights (some leeway if availability allows), otherwise there is a strict two night minimum. No rentals Dec-Feb as property is winterized.

About Steve Ruiter
We stay at our second home on Hat Island as many weekends as possible, since its just 1/2 hour north of Seattle. Our teens like to explore the wetlands and use the kayaks and bring friends. We love to catch and eat Dungeness crab, pick blackberries and bake a crisp, while entertaining friends out on the beach.
Steve Ruiter purchased this House in 2008
Why Steve Ruiter chose Snohomish County
Hat Island is a breathtakingly beautiful secluded island not far from the city of Seattle . With the help of a fabulous local architect and talented designer, we built this custom home between 2006 and 2009 with the goal of creating a quiet, relaxing, fun, family vacation spot. We put a priority on amenities for great sleeping and great cooking and relaxing while reading or enjoying the spectacular panoramic water view. All the bedrooms have a great view; two have private balconies.
What makes this House unique
We see lots of wildlife: whales passing through in the springtime, eagles, seals, birds, and rabbits. Hiking around the island is a great way to get in a 4.5 mile walk at low tide and see all the real estate and local geology. Crabbing, clamming and berry picking (in season; with licenses) are available outside your door. Four free recreational kayaks are available for use, Thre stand-yup paddle-boards, and free use of island vehicle. There are some rules due to the nature of a private island HOA and the geography. For example, the Home Owner's Association has rules about fires and water consumption, and we ask guests not to disturb the neighbors or drive on the grass. Some rules help us leave the house in pleasing shape for the next guests - like cleaning the grill and putting away your dishes the last day - things that are required in most resort/house rentals. And we try to keep the cleaning fee low by having guests make beds on the last day and put borrowed items away. We have an on-island host to help out, and we use the same checklist for ourselves that we give to guests!
Sports & Adventure Activities
A perfect getaway!
This is my second time staying at this location and we plan to return. There was plenty of room for 3 families with kids with plenty of activities to keep everyone busy. The only gripe I have is the immediate neighbors are not happy about having a rental next to them. FYI, the owners are particular about the house and have strict guidelines (rightly so).
If you have a chance to stay here, do it!
This Hat Island house is the most amazing vacation house I've enjoyed. Our family met for a mini-reunion (7 adults and 3 teenage kids) and were amazed by the house and it's integration into the beautiful environment. Walking into the glass-enclosed living area is magical, surrounded by the sea with the water right outside and reflecting in the windows. Magnificent large deck enclosed with a great wide "bench" for sitting, sunbathing or perching wine glasses and hors d'oeuvres, nice water toys (kayaks, SUPs, etc), blackberries outside ready for picking, wonderful bedrooms with sea views, and a kitchen designed for team cooking and entertaining. Sound system (built in speakers inside and out on the deck) with wide-ranging music collection. Many small thoughtful details throughout the property, helpful and personable owners. We loved it!
Close to Seattle but a world away!
This is the most beautiful house I have ever seen in Washington. The house was was immaculate and free of clutter. With our walk around the whole island one day (4 miles at low tide) and a short jaunt up and around the golf course the next, we just scratched the surface of all the fun things to do there and would love to visit again another time. It was great to be met at the ferry and have someone help us get oriented at the beginning of the trip and to make sure we got off okay at the end of the trip.
Window to the Puget Sound
Very nice home with wide open living room, kitchen (GREAT ROOM) and deck with windows all around. Great views and relaxing. Sleeping quarters are in adjacent building connected by patio.
There are a lot of rules and requirements so if you are not one to follow rules and to keep things neat and organized, this place is not for you!
BBQ is electric and small----- somewhat of a problem for large groups.
Thanks for your feedback! With our island host's help, we have shortened the departure check-out list. We also bought a better power cord for the electric grill, thanks to this guest's expert advice that a different cord would mean more heat. We also bought a charcoal grill, for those who prefer the old-fashioned bricket way of doing things.
What an experience!
What an absolutely gorgeous home! Thank you for sharing it. The home and views were spectacular, plus we got to see lots of wildlife (whales, otters, seals, dall porpoises and bald eagles). We definitely hope to go again.
Everything that they say it is.
The house on Hat Island exceeded our expectations in all respects, with the exception of the spring wet weather, which the owners obviously had no control. The house is pristine, the amenities top of the line and setting unbelievable. We saw grey whales within 50 yds from our view in the great room.
It does take a little effort to get there (foot ferry does not travel each day), but our kids thought it was an adventure.
No stores or businesses on the island. On island transportation provided. Foot Ferry to island runs on very limited schedule (0-2 times a day) so generally not possible to use as a base for day trips to mainland. Go there and stay!
