About Ted & Betsy Newcomb
Betsy and I lived in and loved the Mount Snow Valley and its people for 10 years prior to our move south as a pastoral family. We knew this would be the location of our future retirement home where our grown family and all our friends could comfortably gather to renew relationships and build new found community. As the sign says in the living room, 'Friends are the family you find along the way.' We hope you'll discover such warmth in this place. Betsy and I are Massachusetts natives (Amherst & Braintree respectively). We met at college at the University of Massachusetts, setting our eyes on the future. Married one week after graduating, I then continued with my graduate degree in the area of Pastoral Ministry within a progressive denomination. Betsy's field has been greenhouse management. We take a rather pragmatic view of life, raising 3 kids to love the simple pleasures and to revel in the out of doors. It is one of the reasons our hearts leaped when we discovered the property only 11 miles from where we once lived. We knew it was the right place for our future home. And in 2010, construction got underway to fulfill a very big dream that we've long shared.

As previously noted, we are outdoor people who love the environment and revel in the unique beauty of all the changing seasons. Each has a character uniquely its own. The wetland behind the house is an active ecosystem that enthralls visitors. Between activity in the pond, the interplay of color and shadows, floral beauty, a very dark night sky where the Milky Way band leaps out at you, and easy access to the two incredible mountains and their amenities just around the corner along with all the lakes and trails for outdoor enthusiasts, this is about as good as it gets in our mind's eye!
What makes this House unique
When preparing to build, we fell in love with a special design. It melded Betsy's dream of a Country Farm House with a lovely front porch with my vision of a hybrid Colonial. While we employed skilled framers and other trades people do what they do best, we (along with family and so many friends) have labored countless hours to finish interior and exterior to our liking. It has taken two years to get to this point often working just 1-1/2 days per week save for vacation time, but slowly the dream has been realized. Now we are pleased to share it with you!

This was our second stay at this gorgeous house and it was as nice and clean as it was four years ago! Great location, only minutes from Mt. Snow and the town of Dover. The owners are very kind and helpful, responding right away to any inquires we had. We hope to be back soon!!!!

We stayed at the house for the North American obstacle course race held at Stratton mountain in August. Checked in Thursday afternoon and that process could not have been any smoother after a 17 hour drive in from Wisconsin. Walked in and checked the place out. Wow. 3 large bedrooms with plenty of space and beds for a large group. Gourmet kitchen stocked with everything you would need for a stay including spices and some condiments left from previous guest which is very convenient when shopping for groceries. Large living space and beautiful vaulted ceilings and fireplace. Formal dining room. Library. Downstairs there is a bar and pool table. Large porch in the front and a large back deck with an amazing view of a pond. There are neighbors, but you cannot really are them from the property and it feels very secluded on the property. Ted and Betsy (the owners) sent me an email telling us about a meteor shower that was going on this weekend and were very interested in making sure we had everything we needed and gave us plenty of opportunity to contract them if we needed anything. ( we did not because they literally have everything you could ever need there). There are a lot of nice restaurants within a 10-15 min drive and a market close by to stock up on groceries. Mount Snow is a couple minute drive and Stratton mountain is about 20 mins. We would recomend Two Tannery restaurant it was delicious (great salad, bruschetta, entrees, and delicious homemade deserts). If the obstacle race is held in Stratton again next year this house will be ours again for an extended weekend. Never really thought about vacationing in Vermont but wow is all I can say. Cannot wait to be back in this beautiful state and see more of what it has to offer. We are already talking about when we can go back and maybe check out a different season in Vermont as I am sure all of the seasons of the year are absolutely breath taking. thank you for a wonderful vacation.

So we adopt some of the same practices at the house. For instance, we like to keep a fully stocked pantry of spices and cooking items. When guests leave condiments, canned good, spices and other non-perishable food items that meet expiration guidelines, we place them into "community use" whereby the next guests can benefit. In this way waste is dramatically reduced. As you note, there is plenty to see and experience in VT. The Obstacle Race at Stratton, Tough Mudder Competition at Mount Snow, theatre, historical sites, outdoor recreation in every season, and so much more. VT also can make a case for being at the Craft Brew Center of the World. So we hope every guest will find the peace, tranquility and welcoming experience they think. We loved this house. It was in a great location between Mount Snow and Stratton. The house was spacious and the land was big enough for us to snowshoe and do plenty of playing in the snow.

We had 4 couples and the house was perfect. Huge house with awesome game room in the basement.

Very fine restaurants (Dover Forge) and pubs (Valley View Saloon) in West Dover & Wilmington await your discovery. Somerset Reservoir (the largest body of impounded water within VT) is nearby...a total wilderness experience on 11 mile lake. Kayakers...don't miss! Challenging golf courses with grand vistas at Haystack, Mount Snow and Stratton. Cross Country Ski/Snowshoe at Timber Creek or create your own trails in our adjacent National Forest. Appalachian Trail just 5 miles away. Foliage in the region is unparallelled generally from the final week of September through the 2nd week of October. Relax, Re-create, Reflect!
