If you are looking for pristine, unspoiled beaches less than a minute's stroll away and the sound of waves crashing into the seashore lulling you to sleep, look no further than Shells Yeah!
Located oceanside in Avon on Hatteras Island, at Shells Yeah! you will feel like you have escaped the rest of the world, even though every modern amenity you could need is at your fingertips.
You are minutes away from restaurants, shopping, outdoor activities, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, 4x4 beach driving, a fishing pier, charter fishing boats, and a quick drive to the free ferry that will whisk you off to Ocracoke Island for a day trip to explore the quaint island and search for Blackbeard's lost treasure. The only full size grocery store on Hatteras Island, Food Lion, is conveniently only 2 miles away.
Shells Yeah! is less than a minute's stroll from a beach access that will beckon you to Avon's widest, white sandy, uncrowded beach. There are no busy streets to cross on your 45 second journey down our quiet street aptly named Ocean Lane. A second beach access is just another ½ block down. With no public beach parking nearby, you are sharing the beach only with those within walking distance.
If you are unfamiliar with Hatteras Island, you will enjoy our 72 miles of unspoiled beachfront, consistently voted one of the top 10 best beaches in the US. Because of our proximity to the Gulf Stream (which touches the tip of Cape Hatteras) and the island’s unique shape, we enjoy the most temperate year round climate north of Florida and our ocean temperatures are up to 10 degrees warmer than northern OBX villages like Nags Head and Duck. The island’s remote location and low light pollution also mean that you can wish upon plenty of stars and even the Milky Way at night. Shooting stars are a common sight!
Our 1/4 acre property is among the biggest oceanside lots in Avon, and Shells Yeah! was recently sided in a classic beachy yellow. There is plenty of space to park and 2 entrances to the house. We have a charcoal grill for outdoor cooking with a picnic bench next to the grill where you can sit and devour your grilled masterpieces, a private outdoor shower with hot and cold water for rinsing off, and a fish cleaning table with a water line in case you get lucky and catch the big one.
New in 2014 - a Stair Tamer cargo lift, so you can save your stamina for long walks on the beach and send your groceries and luggage up to the house level at the push of a button.
Shells Yeah! has 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms and sleeps 10 vacationers with true comfort (no sofa beds or futons here). There are ceiling fans in every room to capture the ocean breeze. Our decorations are one of a kind, and you are encouraged to have your picture taken with our mascot Captain Shells Yeah! and his trusty sidekick Perch.
The living room is designed with your comfort in mind. We have 3 comfy sofas and a chair so that everyone can spread out. We have a flat screen tv with DVD player, a Nintendo Wii system for the kid in all of us, a skylight for extra sunshine, and a beautiful glimpse of the Pamlico Sound.
The open concept continues into the kitchen where you can catch a tiny glimpse of the ocean through the east facing window. We installed brand new stainless steel appliances in 2011 including a side by side refrigerator with ice maker and filtered water on the door, electric flat top stove, microwave oven, and dishwasher. There are plenty of dishes, silverware, and utensils should you wish to stay in for meals instead of partaking in the island's creative restaurants. We have both a standard coffee maker and a Keurig, for those who enjoy their coffee at the push of a button.
In the dining room you will find an oak table with seating for six and sliding glass doors that open onto a spacious deck with built in benches and adirondack chairs for seating or sunbathing. If it's a full house, there is additional seating at the picnic table on our 22x10 screened porch located just off the dining room, which also includes a double swing from Nags Head Hammocks, two sturdy gliders, two side tables for snacks and beverages, and additional seating.
The master bedroom includes a master bathroom (partially renovated in 2012) with shower and plenty of closet and dresser space for the true fashionistas. We selected a top of the line king mattress for your ultimate comfort, and a chair will provide seating while you slip on your flip flops. Topping it off is a flat screen tv with DVD player and a small glimpse of the sound.
The second bedroom is furnished with a queen bed, seating, closet and dresser space, and a flat screen tv with DVD player. You can catch a small glimpse of the sound.
The third bedroom is furnished with a full size bed, closet and dresser space, and a flat screen tv with DVD player. You can catch a small glimpse of the ocean.
The fourth bedroom is furnished with a full size bed, bunk bed, closet and dresser space, and a flat screen tv with DVD player. You can catch a small glimpse of the sound.
The high efficiency washer and dryer are conveniently inside the house, and centrally located so everyone has equal access to cleaning their beach attire.
Rounding it out is the second bathroom (partially renovated in 2015) with a bathtub and shower.
Best of all, your beds will be made and ready for you when you arrive, at no extra cost! No need to fill your car with bedding for 10 people or pay sky high rates to rent sheets for a week. You can head right to the beach instead of wasting an hour making six beds after your long drive. Just bring your bath and beach towels!
For those who cannot escape from reality altogether, we have wireless high speed Internet.
And did we mention, for an additional fee, that your 4 legged kids can join you on vacation? Up to 2 well behaved dogs are welcome, and will have as much fun as you exploring the beach.
Weekly rentals are available from late March through late November with a Sunday check-in so you can avoid the Friday-Saturday traffic. We are owner managed, so you can have the comfort of knowing that you are dealing with someone who knows you by name, not by property number.
We hope that you find the old time beachy charm of Avon (historically named Kinnakeet) as enchanting as we do, and when anyone asks you if you had a great vacation this year, you can answer unequivocally, 'Shells Yeah!'

Great start to our summer vacation!
Great place! Super clean, close to the beach (honestly a one minute walk) and had absolutely everything we needed. The outdoor shower was great! We loved spending evenings on the outdoor seating areas. The covered deck was great for morning breakfast and dinner allowing the breeze to cool you. Close to groceries and ice cream. A cute little shop only a five minute walk away. Our family had a great time and hopefully be back. Not one T.V was turned on the entire week and we have teenagers!!!
Thank you for a great place to stay!
A shell of a good time!
Our family of six adults and a golden retriever made the trip to Avon from middle Georgia for our first experience of the Outer Banks. We were not disappointed and Shells Yeah! was a great house for us. The house was very clean, with comfortable beds and living areas. We especially liked the screened porch and deck area, and ate most meals at the picnic table on the screened porch. Though not on the front row, the beach was easily accessible and beautiful. We found surf shops nearby where we rented equipment and got advice. We're planning to come back to try kite surfing and to wind surf at the Canadien Hole a few miles south of Avon. We really liked the location of the house. Buxton is a short drive away and there we surfed, played on the beach and swam over to the 'new' island of the Outer Banks, "Shelly Island." Thanks, Eric and Megan, for offering the great vacation home!
Best value and a well cared for cottage
This extremely well cared for cottage is by far the best value that we have stayed at in our dozen plus vacations to the Outer Banks in the last 20 years.Every room has beach themed items from the creepy sailor guy in the front room, lamps, pictures and photo's throughout tol pillows and a beautiful quilt hanging on the wall.
The owners take great care and it shows. From small details like a Keurig to the back saving lift that with a push of a button will take your heavy coolers and luggage from ground up a story and a half. Very nice.
Close to the beach, restaurants, shopping and the supermarket that will save you time and energy.
November is off season, I was surprised on the amount of people and traffic around. While we have never been to the Outer Banks during in-season and peak my wife and I are certain there would be 3 to 4 times what we experienced. The secret must be out on off-season along with the best fishing we ever had and excellent weather.
I cannot say enough about how the owners really truly care about this property and are very accommodating as they let us stay a extra day(paid extra,of course).
Thank you guys for letting us share your second home.
P.S. We could not find a diary/ log book to share our experience along with reading other people's fun times.
Lovely home in a perfect location
My wife, newborn baby and some extended members of our family stayed for a week. The location is fantastic, a few minutes walk to the beach.
The town had a god supermarket, some restaurants, stores and a great ice cream shop nearby.
The house was very comfortable and stocked with everything we needed for a memorable family vacation. The screened in porch was fantastic but for me, the highlight was being able to walk to the beach to enjoy the sunrise with my dogs and having the beach almost to myself.
It is only a short 10 minute derive to Cape Hatteras lighthouse and a hour drive to the Wright Brothers Memorial, both of which are must-do's.
The beach is great though there were a lot of flies one day and the water was rough but that was due to a tropical storm. I can't imagine it ever being crowded, as there is no where for non residents to park, so it was nice to have such a large area of beach almost to ourselves.
All in all, a fantastic time was had by all.
Great location! Didn't want to leave!
This was our first time in Avon and it won't be our last! The house is in a great location. Easy walk to the beach - even with toddlers. When we first entered the house, the kids were spooked of the "Captain" ;) But they quickly loved him. The outside shower was great. The cargo lift was so handy with luggage and groceries. Thanks for having a great place for us to bring our dogs.
Our week in Avon-Shells Yeah!
We had the most relaxing week ever! Although we spent most of the week with rain, high winds, and COLD, Shells Yeah made us perfectly comfortable for just relaxing!!! The house had everything we needed to feel like we were right at home. Definitely will be back! Thanks Shells Yeah, great memories!
Free ferry to Ocracoke Island a half hour away. Beach driving available for 4x4 vehicles (permit needed).
