About Dale and Vicki Strohmaier

Vicki and I live and work in Delaware, Vicki as a nurse liaison for our local hospital ER and I in custom home sales. We have been traveling to Maine off and on for the last 28 years, first staying in motels, then bed and breakfast and lastly in a cottage in Blue Hill we found on HomeAway. We have fantasized about owning a cottage in Maine and during each trip we scouted properties for sale. In 2010 we found Mill Cove Cottage on the internet and went to take a look at it during our fall trip. It was a mess! Weeds filled the lot, window panes were falling out, the roof was shot, there were no cabinets, it had an old gas range and bar sized refrigerator, a toilet and claw foot bath tub sat in the middle bedroom! But we fell in love with the location and the uniqueness of the cottage and settled on it in December.

The challenge became how to transform this run down gem into a desirable retreat for couples wanting a special getaway, doing this from our home 700 miles away! By pure luck we found Marilyn (the property manager) and Arthur. Arthur was able to take our amateur drawings and sketchy ideas and work his magic. In the spring of 2011 we arrived to apply the finishing touches. In July of 2011 our first couple arrived. They were newlyweds!

Mill Cove Cottage is designed, furnished and supplied for couples. There is no room for children, friends or in-laws. The couch is not a sleeper! It is a retreat, a getaway, a sanctuary. It is for getting to know each other better and for reflections of the past. It is for young or young at heart. It is for relaxing and exploring. It is for two people who want to spend time together.

Dale and Vicki Strohmaier purchased this cottage in 2010

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Dale and Vicki,

The cottage was amazing! It exceeded our wildest expectations. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay there! Everything was so wonderfully clean and new, and as soon as we walked in the door, we both truly just felt right at home. The red binder was extremely useful and helpful with its plethora of information. It was really nice and appreciated that you took the time to put that together for

us. It really made adjusting to the area extremely easy considering we were to be there for such a short period of time.

- We really didn't eat out too often, we went food shopping when we got there, and made a lot of meals at home in the cottage, and ate overlooking the beautiful sunsets every night! We used the grill to cook steaks one night, and that worked wonderfully, and was very easy to use.

We only had to use the air conditioner on the day we arrived. Everything was sealed up when we got there so it was a bit hot and stuffy inside, but we quickly opened up all the windows and it cooled down comfortably in a very short span of time. Other than that, we didn't have to use it at all. The breeze that comes through was wonderful, and kept us at a very comfortable temperature all week long. - We both had such a wonderful time at Mill Cove Cottage and would

love to come back and stay there again. Thank you so much, once again, for allowing us this wonderful opportunity. It was my first time in Maine, and I could not have asked for a better experience. Hope you are both safe and made it through Hurricane Irene without any damage.

Excellently maintained cozy place for two. Allows access to Acadia easily.

  • 4 of 5

Excellent hosts with their communication and stocking of the house. Modern, clean and tidy.

Close to road and quite a few cars race by pretty fast. The stairs may be a bit steep for anyone not steady on their feet. Nice view of the tidal cove with accessories like a fire pit and access to the water.

Romantic cottage for two

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from our week-long rental at Mill Cove. Without a doubt, this home exceeded our expectations. The pictures on line accurately depict how things look inside and out. The house is basically secluded and offers incredible views of the cove. We loved watching the tide roll in and out. The kayak is a wonderful addition to the rental which we used several times to explore the area from the water. We enjoyed getting a first-hand view of the local fisherman at work. We were very impressed with the detail the owners put into making our stay as comfortable and carefree as possible. They really thought of everything you could need especially traveling in from out of state. Dale and Vicki provided a detailed itinerary which we found very helpful as we explored the area. We hit the highlights of Acadia but also found many interesting places to visit outside the park. We highly recommend Mill Cove as the place to stay for your week-long getaway for couples. Thank you for a wonderful vacation as we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary.

Absolute perfection

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for our one year anniversary. The property was beautiful and the house provided a truly romantic experience. The firepit on the water was great, we took the tandem kayak out twice, we had the water to ourselves except for the seals and bald eagles (Be sure to check the tides so you don't get stuck in the mud!) The kitchen was fully stocked so we were able to cook many delicious meals at home. Bar harbor and Acadia was about a 30 minute drive, we also loved checking out Schoodic Point. Every detail was thought out by Dale and Vicki, from the telescope to matching robes and the awesome activity recommendations they provided. We would most definitely love to come stay here again, Thanks for an unforgettable trip!

The property is absolutely beautiful, perfectly quaint. Sunsets off the back deck, and sunrises out the bedroom window are unreal. Perfect location.

DREAM Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed at Mill Cove Cottage for a week and it was the most beautiful place! Dale and Vicki anticipated our every need. The cottage was comfortable, and equipped with everything from bath robes, to a bottle of local wine, any kind of culinary tool you may need during your stay, and so much more. Through e-mail, Dale and Vicki even considered that we are both potters and recommended nearby artisans to visit. If you are considering staying here, book it asap! In addition to relaxing and enjoying everything the cottage has to offer, this is an excellent place for hiking (Acadia National Park), kayaking, fishing, quiet sight seeing (Schoodic), shopping (Bar Harbor & Ellsworth), great local seafood, wineries and breweries. This place is TRULY special and we both agree this has been our favorite vacation. We can't say enough good things!

Almost Perfect

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful view, cozy house, perfect sunset on the kayak and great fires on the point. We really enjoyed our stay, but were disappointed by the road noise. The house was centrally located for our trips to Lubec, Schoodic, Surry, Cranberries and of course Mt Desert. Love the area and will return soon.
