About Dale and Vicki Strohmaier

Vicki and I live and work in Delaware, Vicki as a nurse liaison for our local hospital ER and I in custom home sales. We have been traveling to Maine off and on for the last 28 years, first staying in motels, then bed and breakfast and lastly in a cottage in Blue Hill we found on HomeAway. We have fantasized about owning a cottage in Maine and during each trip we scouted properties for sale. In 2010 we found Mill Cove Cottage on the internet and went to take a look at it during our fall trip. It was a mess! Weeds filled the lot, window panes were falling out, the roof was shot, there were no cabinets, it had an old gas range and bar sized refrigerator, a toilet and claw foot bath tub sat in the middle bedroom! But we fell in love with the location and the uniqueness of the cottage and settled on it in December.

The challenge became how to transform this run down gem into a desirable retreat for couples wanting a special getaway, doing this from our home 700 miles away! By pure luck we found Marilyn (the property manager) and Arthur. Arthur was able to take our amateur drawings and sketchy ideas and work his magic. In the spring of 2011 we arrived to apply the finishing touches. In July of 2011 our first couple arrived. They were newlyweds!

Mill Cove Cottage is designed, furnished and supplied for couples. There is no room for children, friends or in-laws. The couch is not a sleeper! It is a retreat, a getaway, a sanctuary. It is for getting to know each other better and for reflections of the past. It is for young or young at heart. It is for relaxing and exploring. It is for two people who want to spend time together.

Dale and Vicki Strohmaier purchased this cottage in 2010

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Dale and Vicki,

The cottage was amazing! It exceeded our wildest expectations. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay there! Everything was so wonderfully clean and new, and as soon as we walked in the door, we both truly just felt right at home. The red binder was extremely useful and helpful with its plethora of information. It was really nice and appreciated that you took the time to put that together for

us. It really made adjusting to the area extremely easy considering we were to be there for such a short period of time.

- We really didn't eat out too often, we went food shopping when we got there, and made a lot of meals at home in the cottage, and ate overlooking the beautiful sunsets every night! We used the grill to cook steaks one night, and that worked wonderfully, and was very easy to use.

We only had to use the air conditioner on the day we arrived. Everything was sealed up when we got there so it was a bit hot and stuffy inside, but we quickly opened up all the windows and it cooled down comfortably in a very short span of time. Other than that, we didn't have to use it at all. The breeze that comes through was wonderful, and kept us at a very comfortable temperature all week long. - We both had such a wonderful time at Mill Cove Cottage and would

love to come back and stay there again. Thank you so much, once again, for allowing us this wonderful opportunity. It was my first time in Maine, and I could not have asked for a better experience. Hope you are both safe and made it through Hurricane Irene without any damage.

Loved this! Referred friends already

This is a treasure. Greeted with a bottle of local blueberry wine. The property owners have thought of everything and will help you plan you're trip. It is relaxing yet near so many activities iaway from all the tourism if you choose. Of course near Acadia, kayaking, hiking, & biking.but also wineries ,breweries, nature trails, small historic towns, arts, antiques, restaurants. We could've stayed on site the whole week and been happy as well.House appears like a small lighthouse on outside and like an upscaled well stocked and designed tree house inside .Loved it!

Maine at its Best!

  • 5 of 5

We were traveling through Maine and took a risk by waiting to find a place to land the very week of our stay. The risk certainly worked out in our favor! Dale and Vicki's cottage was the perfect escape at a private location. It was full of unexpected things to see and do, while also being removed enough from the traffic of Acadia. Dale and Vicki were great to work with on such short notice, including organizing an endless amount of recommendations with a condensed sample itinerary to simplify all the options. To begin our three nights we arrive just as the sun was setting, which could not have provided a warmer welcome to the amazing views. We spent the next day in Acadia and can vouch for the accuracy of Dale and Vicki's detailed recommendations for things to see, trails to hike, and places to eat. We returned back to the cottage with the plan to stay and see the change in tide at the cottage the next day. Never expecting the opportunity to get the kayak out, we found the change in tide was greater and grander than expected and gave the cottage an ever changing perspective of the cove - ultimately giving us the opportunity to get on the water, work toward the fishing/lobster boats further out in the water, and to see the area in all its Fall glory from every corner of the cove. This was one of the many amazing highlights of our time there. The uniqueness of the surroundings never stopped. Later that night we were able to relax outside and watch the 'wormers' hard at work with their headlamps bouncing through the cove. Another unexpected delight. In addition to the amazing colors of Fall, we also experienced one of the clearest starred filled nights we had ever seen. Although we say the cottage was removed from Acadia, the drive to all of the sites could not have been shorter. All-in-all, the gamble to wait til the last minute turned out to be a home run, with much of the credit going to Dale and Vicki. The only regret was limiting our stay to three nights. Thank you both!

Perfect Retreat for Two

  • 5 of 5

Mill Cove Cottage was such an amazing find, and Dale and Vicki were great to work with! The cottage itself is very well-constructed, well-appointed and so comfortable. It's truly perfect for two. We loved enjoying the view every morning with a cup of tea, watching the tide go in and out, and seeing the sun set over the cove. We even saw a seal in the cove!

It was about a 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia which was perfect for us. My husband and I loved being able to escape the "busyness" of Bar Harbor to Dale and Vicki's retreat after long days of hiking Acadia and sightseeing. Dale and Vicki had excellent recommendations for restaurants as well (Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound and Sylvia's Cafe's cinnamon rolls on Wednesdays, to name a few :)). Even though the kitchen has every type of dish, gadget and utensil one could possibly need, we didn't end up cooking because the restaurants in the area were so good!

Thank you for sharing your special retreat with us! We highly recommend Mill Cove Cottage!

A piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

Oh my goodness! Dale and Vicki your lovely haven was all you said and more! The peacefulness of the cove and washed over us the first time we pulled in the drive. Every hour there was filled with a new surprise and blessing. We so enjoyed hiking the trails in Acadia, but especially Schoodic Point. We loved being able to get away and enjoy nature. The hike to the Anvil thru it's elvish moss covered woods on a foggy afternoon was glorious! The kayak was fantastic! Saw eagle and seal when we paddled to the island. Cooked our very first (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th!) lobsters from the Winter Harbor Co-op in your wonderful pot. Loved just sitting and watching the tide roll in and out. And the campfires topped off the day! Time for cards and games, reading, and painting. Your cottage and grounds are so clean and well kept, stocked with everything and anything we needed. What a joy! So hard to say goodbye. Thank you thank you for sharing your slice of heaven!
