Manset is the home of the famous Hinckley Boat Yard and some of the most beautiful views of Somes Sound, the mountains, and the waters of Mount Desert Island. The surrounding area of Mount Desert Island is rich with beauty and loaded with things to do. Hiking and biking on Acadia National Park trails, sailing, motor boating, beachcombing, swimming, rock climbing, golfing, whale watching, antique shopping and eating delicious seafood are among the many activities within a very short drive of Manset.

The Explorer Bus (the local free island shuttle bus) stops nearby from late June to mid-September. There is also seasonal ferry service to the local islands embarking at a dock just down the street (both within walking distance.) There is a nice 2-mile loop walk along the Shore Road from the house and up Alder Lane along Seawall Road. The 2 mile walk into town does not have consistent sidewalks, but is just a 5 minute ride away.

Summer 2013: a new restaurant will open near the town dock -- an easy walk from this house.

About Jennie or Andy Cline

I am retired…Had a wonderful life as a dancer and filmmaker. Performed with several “modern” companies, but primarily Dance Collective in Boston (a company that existed for 30 years!). Was Executive Producer and Director of the WGBH New Television Workshop that produced new video genres – mostly video art, video dance and some music, drama and poetry. (WGBH is PBS station in Boston). My last endeavor was as a founder and co-creator of Art 21. This includes a PBS national prime-time broadcast focusing on contemporary artists and many other projects world-wide and still going strong!. See

I am married to Andy Griffiths who is happily still working!! He retired for about a month and then took this job at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. He is Adminstrative Dean and CFO ( with a brief stint as Interim and 6th President). He is entering his 9th year!

Jennie or Andy Cline purchased this farmhouse in 1985

Why Jennie or Andy Cline chose Mount Desert Island

I love Maine. I went to camp (the Luther Gulick Camps) for 9 years on Sebago Lake in Maine. We think we have the best view of sea and mountains on the island. We have added a guest house and pond to the property. The main house is an old farmhouse built in the early 1800’s (maybe 1825?) and there also is a barn.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Top asset is the extraordinary view. Great for morning coffee on the front porch. View from the third floor – eight dormers – is spectacular and you can see the sunrise without getting out of bed! Sunlight in the kitchen in the morning is beautiful. Sunlight from the South and West in the living room from noon to sunset. I love that it is an old house but it has been insulated and has new thermal windows so it is never damp or chilly. It has heat, but it is rarely needed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic time here! We were a total of 8 people and the house accommodated us perfectly. It is a lovely home, we could all hang around in the kitchen cooking a meal, sit around the spacious dining room table, relax in the living room, or just hang out on the porch and take in the beautiful ocean view. The house is minutes away from Southwest Harbor village, and steps away from a dock where my son could go fishing. The owners, who live behind the house, were very friendly and helpful, willing to offer tips for special places on the island. I highly recommend this place for a quintessential Maine vacation.

Griffith's Farmhouse: Is it too cliche to say Heaven on Earth?

  • 5 of 5

Here's one of those instances where the pictures tell a true story. Every ounce of this home and its location is as magical as its photographs. In fact, I'm sitting in the house now, knowing it's our family's last full day and I feel like pulling a page out of my toddler's book, digging in my heels, and refusing to leave.

So what makes it so special? The view, for one. We spent each evening on the front porch watching sailboats glide in and out of the bay. Nearly every morning, the view in the back was of a family of deer, quietly munching on grass and tree leaves. They only scampered away when they heard my children squealing with delight.

Then there's the house itself. Perfection around every turn, in every room. Of course there's the utility of it, big rooms, big kitchen and dining room, front and back porches, great water pressure...but that's not what makes it so special. What makes it special is its character - the built-ins, the antique furniture, the vintage wallpaper, vintage glassware, the amazing art, the views out of every window. The house has a soul, a warm one, one that we felt honored to get to know.

Finally, there's the location. We've managed to bike, hike, and drive the entire island during our stay, and I can say with complete confidence there's no better spot on the island. There's no better quiet street for evening strolls, no better views, no better people, no better feeling of peace. I guess that's why we chose the "quiet side." We wanted to pack our days with activity and come home to a feeling of complete tranquility. That's exactly what the Griffiths Farmhouse offers.

A little about us? We're an active couple with three children, ages 8, 5 and 21 months. Our favorite family activities during our stay were the Ship Harbor and Gorham Trail Hikes, riding the Carriage Trails on our Bikes (that we rented from Southwest Cycle), swimming in Echo Lake and at Sand Beach, exploring Bar Harbor, and taking a stroll every evening down the street the home sits on.
