Ridgway is the northern entrance of the scenic San Juan Skyway, an All-American Road, which serves as a crossroad for commerce, transportation, history and scenery. The San Juan Skyway, one of the most spectacular roadways in the U.S., winds through unmatched scenery — it is a photographer’s dream.

Nestled in the picturesque Uncompahgre Valley and surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks of the Cimarron and San Juan Mountains, Ridgway is the “Gateway to the San Juans.” The movies True Grit and How the West was Won were both shot in the area.

There are many activities for families to enjoy while they are in the area:

Historic/scenic driving, walking, hiking, biking, river rafting, kayaking, ATV and 4x4 jeep touring, hot balloon adventures, horseback riding, hot springs soaking, rock climbing, tennis (in Ridgway Town Park), golfing (The Divide Ranch and Club on Log Hill), in addition to camping, boating, fishing and walking in Ridgway State Park. Visit Mesa Verde National Park cliff dwellings; also take in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison with its spectacular canyon views and cool Gunnison River waters just east of Montrose.

Additionally, Telluride offers festivals almost every weekend of the summer season. Telluride has four waterfalls, high-altitude mining towns, the highest concentration of 14,000-ft. peaks in North America and the most high-altitude passes.

Colorful hiking includes fields of wildflowers that begin to bloom in June and peak in July, with yellows, reds and burnt orange color in late September and early October.

We offer full concierge services in summer and winter and would be delighted to arrange airport transfers, horseback riding, river rafting, guided hikes/walks, mountain biking, private chef, butler/home stocking services; in winter we offer concierge services to arrange ski/snowboard equipment rental fittings AT YOUR HOME, ski/snowboard instruction, snowmobiling, dogsledding, etc., etc.

Keywords: Rocky Mtn vacation escape; secluded mountain chalet; get ready to be amazed by a plethora of outdoor activities, stargazing; wildlife; quaking aspens and COOL, cool mountain air! Only 18 minutes to Ridgway; 1/2 hour to Telluride.

About Anita and Frank Lambert

As a custom home builder and interior designer, we chose this incredible mountain location as a getaway from the city and traffic of SW Florida. The only traffic you run into here is elk across your road and driveway! Ouray County has one sole traffic light and Telluride has none!! We so much appreciate being the single residence on our own 35 acre parcel in the 300 acre subdivision named Sky Mountain Ranch! The aspens individual green leaves 'quake' in the summertime and provide cool breezes and shade.

There are so many outdoor activities close by - visit summer farmers' markets; go whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain climbing, biking, kayaking on rivers and Ridgway Reservoir and golfing at the Divide Ranch & Club or The Bridges or Cobble Creek in Montrose or Devil's Thumb in Delta, CO.

Anita and Frank Lambert purchased this chalet in 2005

Why Anita and Frank Lambert chose Telluride Area

We chose this location as it is only 18 minutes to Ridgway and 1/2 hour to Telluride. There are so many outdoor activities close by - in winter enjoy Telluride's world class skiing and snowboarding and snowmobiling. In summertime, visit the open air farmers' markets; go 4x4 offroading, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain climbing, touring and biking, kayaking on rivers and boating at Ridgway Reservoir and golfing at the Divide Ranch & Club or be our guest at Cornerstone - a Greg Norman mountain course, voted #1 in new mountain golf courses by GOLF magazine.

What makes this chalet unique

Peace and serenity, cool mountain breezes, country cafes and summer open air concerts will draw you back year after year!

Incredible!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week for our 25th Anniversary and it was by far the best decision we could have made. We thought about Europe, Hawaii and other more exotic places but we are so happy we chose Sky Mountain Ranch. The house is beautiful, top notch kitchen, state of the art TV with surround sound, super comfy bed and a master bathroom like no other - jetted tub and multi-head shower. And all of this in a fantastic setting in the beautiful San Juan Mountains!

Sitting in the outdoor hot tub under the stars listening to some smooth Jazz was one of our favorites of the trip and roasting a few marshmallows by the fire pit was pretty good too.

5 minute drive to some of the most impressive mountain views you will ever see and then 20 min to Ridgeway for a great market or several places to eat if you want to get out. Ouray or Telluride are 30-40min drive in opposite directions.

Several times we saw small herds of Elk and Deer.

We will be back, maybe soon to see the fall colors.

If you want to relax in a beautiful setting in a wonderful house/cabin and really get away from it all, this is the place!

Gorgeous home in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We love staying at Sky Mountain Ranch, it is a secluded property in 35 acres but an easy drive to Telluride, Ridgeway and Ouray for skiing, hiking, good food and entertainment. Anita's house is very welcoming, has all the home comforts and a few extras - nothing better than relaxing in the hot tub after a day in the mountains. Love the wildlife that is right by your door. Perfect for families. I know we will keep returning to this beautiful home.

Spectacular property with all the comforts of home

  • 5 of 5

This being our first experience with a VRBO property, we couldn't have been more pleased. From the moment we pulled into the property welcoming us to Sky Mountain Ranch, we knew this would be a special place. Very secluded, yet close to the best that Telluride has to offer. Whether it be skiing, hiking or simply snowed in for a day, Frank & Anita's place makes you feel you're coming back to a mountain chalet.

Amazing night skies and peaceful days on their 35 acres is the best detachment from the hustle of everyday working life. Nearly every comfort of home is provided, and Frank & Anita are quick to respond with any questions or concerns.

We had an absolute blast, and can't wait to come back. I couldn't give this property a higher recommendation.

San Juan Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Been vacationing in the San Juan's for 30 years, was fortunate to find this incredible property three years ago. Home is exquisite with every amenity you would expect in a high end home. Easy access and situated conveniently between Ridgeway and Telluride, elk and deer abound and hiking is right outside your door. Looking forward to our return next year.

Fall Wonderland

  • 5 of 5

My family came in during our Fall break. Anita and Frank were awesome and took excellent care of us. Their secluded mountain home was absolutely amazing...all the comforts of home from the living room, fully eqipped kitchen to the very comfortable bedrooms. The woods around the area were beautiful with the changing colors and especially being able to see it all from the hot tub. We had a great time in Telluride and the gondolla ride to Mountain Village is a must see! We had a great and very relaxating vacation there and highly recommend it!

Early April at Sky Mountain Ranch

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time during our stay at your Sky Mountain Ranch home. We found sun every day as we toured the south west corner of Colorado area from Grand Junction to Four Corners and Hwy 128 in Utah to Silverton. Enjoyed hiking in the Black Canyon, mountain trails around Ridgway, Ouray and off access roads towards Cimarron Ridge near Deer Creek. The weather reached 70+ one afternoon so found time to soak up some rays at the Ridgway Reservoir. We had a couple of clear nights where night sky was amazing from Mesa above the ranch and of course the hot tub.

A group of elk and a chipmunk along with a number of flocks of birds visited the ranch regularly during our stay.

Your comfortable home was as advertised with all amenities working well. The location was central to many ski hills in the area. Ridgway is just a short drive away with coffee, ice cream, groceries, outfitters happy to give tips for good hiking and biking in the area and equipment rentals.

Mid April turned out to be a great time to visit as all the local and surrounding attractions, parks, towns and roadways were not busy. Many trails were accessible and temperature wonderful for hiking.

Thank you for opening your home to us and to your local representative for giving us a tour of the property and ensuring all was ready for us. We would recommend your sunny home and visit again.

Only 25 minutes to Divide Ranch & Club's 18 hole golf course with incredible San Juan vistas and very cozy clubhouse with full kitchen!

The wildlife is abundant here. Deer and elk make this property their home; you will hear the coyotes across the way when they are ready to feast! Sometimes you will see eagles, turkeys, and grouse or less frequently bobcat, porcupine and bear are seen. Wildflowers abound in the summer and springtime.

The Autumn colors are truly a wonder with reds, gold and oranges.

You can hike and bike right out the front door on trails and dirt roads around the house; below the house, the Whiskey Charlie county trail (4.8 miles) leads you along the abandoned railroad grade to Brown Ranch.

Mountain bikes can be rented in Ridgway/Telluride; hike on the National Forest trails with access from many of the neighboring roads.

Check out the hot springs in both Ouray and near Ridgway. And don't forget to let the stars awe you at night from the deck!
