About The Owner

Laurie, Paul and Mary have been friends for 25 years, so when they first saw the cabin and site, they knew it was a place that they would like share and enjoy together, as well as return to many times.

All of us lived in Marinette in the past, and now in or near Madison, WI. Mary with her son, John, a CSA farmer, and Laurie and Paul on a property the looks more like it is in northern Wisconsin than in Madison. Mary moved from Marinette in 1990, and Laurie and Paul in 2009, all to take enticing jobs. While Laurie is an Oncology nurse, Paul a Pharmacist, and Mary a Realtor, all greatly enjoy outdoor activities and this area has an abundance of them. Cross-country skiing, biking, hiking, whitewater canoeing, gardening, cooking and birding are our favorite hobbies. Laurie loves lighthouses and writing. Paul plays the violin and enjoys teaching pharmacy students, and Mary has chickens and loves vegetable gardening and ballroom dancing. Laurie and Paul organized the first Menominee River Century bike ride and ran it for 20+ years, hiked in Alaska several times and biked across Italy. Mary has skied the American Birkebeiner 5 times, hiked the Grand Canyon twice after having both hips resurfaced, and has worked as a Naturalist.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2009

Why The Owner chose Marinette

Having lived in the area for many years, we knew what a peaceful, beautiful area it was, and have enjoyed so many great recreational activities in the area that we knew it to be a fine vacation spot. That has proven to be true too! We all enjoy our 'new' get-away place very much, and never tire of gathering around the fire and enjoying our view of the bay as the sun goes down.

It also is far enough north that we really feel like we are 'getting away', and on a vacation. Yet it is close enough to larger metropolitan areas that we have access to the best of both worlds.

What makes this cottage unique

Where else can one look out over the water and feel like you are standing on a rise above an ocean, and still be in Wisconsin? The yard is set about 15 feet above the water level for an outstanding view of Lake Michigan, and on a clear day or night, a view of Door County 15 miles away. At night the lights of the small Door County towns sparkle and shimmer on the water at your feet, and the stars and moon do the same from above. You will feel like you are in a park with your own personal entrance to the water via our private boardwalk/dock. If you sit along the shore for a while, eagles, shorebirds and waterfowl will probably be spotted. Everything from the huge white pelicans, and bald eagles, to terns, ducks, rails and wading shorebirds. In the spring and early summer the peepers, frogs and toads may serenade you after dark.

You can enjoy the rustic, rural delights yet still go inside to the beautiful, welcoming charm of Green Shutters.

Beautiful house, had a great time!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful house and had more than we could have ever needed. The pictures don't do justice to how much space there is. Our group of 8 was expecting to be a little cramped but we had plenty of room. The outside of the house looks a little old but the inside is completely renovated and very well done. I don't have enough good things to say about this place. Our group is probably coming back next year!

Green Shutters was the perfect place for our visit with friends. We had room for our two families (4 adults and 5 children) with children that ranged in age from 5-15. There was more than enough space for all of us and we were able to enjoy the beauty of the lake and cottage and just relax! We couldn't have asked for a nicer home and the owners were responsive and easy to work with. We definitely hope to return again!

This was the perfect place for my sisters and me to spend a winter weekend playing Scrabble! There was even a Scrabble game waiting for us when we arrived!!! We all had our own bedrooms with flannel sheets and heavy quilts. The kitchen was great for cooking and the views from the cottage to the bay and the snow covered pines was beautiful. The owners were wonderful to work with it and the caretaker came down to check on us and be sure we had hot water. We are already planning a trip back in the fall for another Scrabble weekend. Thanks so much for sharing your home!

Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for three days with extended family in order to attend a family reunion in Menominee Michigan. My initial thought was that it was like the "Tardis", looks deceptively small from the outside but is open and airy with lots of room inside. The owners have decorated it impeccably with lots of art work. The kitchen has modern stainless steel appliances and is well stocked with cookware and dishes and some pantry items. The lawn is sprawling with a fire pit just made for night time campfires. The lake frontage is full of reeds but we kayaked past the reeds to get to the open water.

There are two medium sized bedrooms on the first floor and one large bedroom upstairs. Bathrooms were nice, clean and up to date. The WiFi was great, especially considering we had three teenagers and four adults, all with electronic devices. My sister from Virginia was with me and said if we need to be in Marinette for any family obligation, we should get this cottage again.

Quiet and quaint - on Lake Michigan

  • 5 of 5

We came here to stay for four days while playing golf in the UPLGA at Little River Country Club. After golf, we enjoyed our clean and comfortable cottage in a very quiet and private neighborhood. Took advantage of the fire pit and swam in the bay. You have to wade out quite a bit before hitting open water, so I recommend taking flotation devices and water shoes. Also brought my bicycle and took in some of the sites of the area. If you haven't been to this part of the country, you are missing out!

Canoeing, rafting on the Peshtigo or Menominee Rivers, whitewater canoeing an hour away, birdwatching, 9 golf courses within 50 miles, one a mile away. Flat terrain makes biking easy, campfire overlooking the water, telescope for viewing the night sky, snowshoes available, concerts on summer evenings at the Menominee marina, shallow water by shore, eagle sightings common, great kitchen for cooking, relaxation...
