Hillman, Northeast Michigan. Hillman is not far from Alpena and Atlanta -3.5 hours from Metro Detroit
Log cottage, smoke free, sleeps 5-6, 2 bedrooms (1st room- 1 queen bed, 2nd room-1 twin and 1 bunk bed). Additional sleeping for two in small loft. Fantastic lake views from living room with stone fireplace, remodeled kitchen and large new sunroom.
A large deck overlooks the lake. The cottage sits on 100’ of sandy bottomed lakefront property. There is also a sandy play area and a fire pit. Our lot is quite large with many hardwood trees giving it an up north feel.
There is a free public boat launch on the lake and mooring available at our dock. Renters may also have free use of our 12’ aluminum rowboat with oars and our two kayaks. The shoreline has many stretches of vacant land making the lake very peaceful with little activity
Long Lake is one of the top five cleanest lakes in Michigan. It is a clear, natural spring fed lake which often takes on a turquoise blue hue making visitors feel like they are in the Caribbean. Long Lake is home to loons, blue herons and an occasional bald eagle. Fish inhabiting the lake include trout, blue gill, walleye, perch and small and large mouth bass.
Golfers will be greatly impressed with the quality of local golf courses. Two premiere courses include Thunder Bay Golf Resort just 10 minutes away and Elk Ridge Golf Course 15 minutes from the cottage. Another popular and renowned course is Black Lake which is 30 minutes to the north of us. Golfers can play a different course each day and never drive over 30 minutes.
The Thunder Bay Golf Resort is also home to a large elk herd. Elk can be observed during all seasons. During the winter months patrons can go on horse drawn elk viewing sleigh rides to a cabin in the woods for a fantastic dinner.
The historical town of Alpena is only 35 minutes away. Visitors can attend one of many summer festivals, walk around the harbor and marina or visit the National Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
Other attractions include Ocqueoc Falls which is the Lower Peninsula’s only waterfall. Those who want a broader fishing experience might like the well-known Fletcher’s Floodwaters or Hubbard Lake.
Sports enthusiast will also enjoy snowmobiling on state trails in the area. The state trails are only 3 miles away and accessible by back trails. The state trail network connects to all of Lower Michigan. Ice fishing is another popular winter activity on the lake.
There is state land in walking distance for those wishing to hike and view wildlife.

Wonderful quite cottage with a beautiful setting
Very nice cottage on a beautiful lake. Every thing that was promised. Had a wonderful relaxing weekend!
Beautiful lake view
We absolutely loved the cabin. Enjoyed kayaking, golfing near by, and quiet nights by the fire.
So happy you enjoyed your stay! The lake is beautiful in September.
Great Cottage with stunning views.
We really enjoyed ourselves at this log cottage on Long Lake. We came up with our Aunt celebrating her 90th birthday and she found it idyllic. Very accessible with all rooms on one floor. The pictures online don't do it justice-much nicer. Everything was clean and enough dishes and supplies in kitchen. We used the kayaks and the row boat even though the weather was cool. Stopped and viewed the Elk a couple of times-that was fun. Very relaxing, thanks so much Cathy and Art.
Best Vacation Spot in Northern Michigan
I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway. Art and Cathy are very accommodating and have a beautiful cottage inside and out. The inside is up to date and kept clean. As far as outdoors, we like how close it is to the water as opposed to some other properties, and enjoyed using the kayaks provided. I have been coming up to Long Lake since I was little and keep coming back. We invited friends up for a couple of days and they could not stop commenting on how peaceful the lake is. In fact, they asked us if they could stay an extra day because it was just too hard leave. Long Lake is so clear and most of the time looks turquoise because of the clear water and sandy bottom. You will also see and hear a lot of loons on the lake. Definitely the perfect vacation spot.
We have nothing but good things to say about this place! Cannot wait to return. Beautiful, comfortable cottage on the lake. Exactly what we wanted. We enjoyed coffee on the deck in the morning with the beautiful sounds of the loons. Played in the sand and water, kayaked, and just relaxed. The water was crystal clear, no rocks or muck. Neighbors were close but did not bother us at all. Perfect for young kids! My one year old had a blast! My only regret is that we did not stay longer, but will be returning next summer and will. We drove to Alpena for groceries... Nice drive and cool town! This is a little slice of heaven that will not disappoint! Thanks Cathy and Art for sharing your cabin with my family! Next year can't come soon enough!!!
My family had a great time at the property. The beach was perfect for the kids and the water was crystal clear. You could spend all afternoon on the back deck watching the kids swim. The sunroom is a great feature, and all the accomodations were up to date and clean.
