Canton Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 4 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8 adults)

The Laurel Cottage is one of only two cottages on Cold Mountain's 200 Riverfront Acres. This page features The Laurel, but if your dates are taken for the Laurel, please check the availability of VRBO Listing #325383 or simply email or call us. Please visit us on Facebook: The Cottages at Cold Mountain. Above all, watch the video. You'll be glad you did!

One of two cottages on Cold Mountain's 200 riverfront acres, the Laurel Cottage was designed by renowned architect Keith Summerour and the idea was to take the very finest elements of luxury homebuilding and scale them down to an enjoyable, sensible size of 2300 feet. In the indoors, we wanted guests to be able to enjoy the very best materials, craftsmanship and design--understated elegance. The exterior features locally harvested stone, cedar siding, and unbelievable Ludowici clay tile roofing. Guests will feel at once that they are stepping back in time to an era when craftsmanship and materials still mattered, and stepping forward into the future with flatscreens wired with digital cable, GoogleTV and unlimited on-demand Netflix. The Laurel's hidden, walk-in pantry is reminiscent of an English larder.

The kitchen, dining and living areas are fully integrated with an all-stone terrace timber-framed porch. The kitchen features plaster walls, beautiful views, a Wolf range, Subzero refrigerators and beautiful soapstone countertops and custom cabinets.

The Laurel Cottage is one of only two cottages located within the private, gated riverfront conservation community called Cold Mountain. The clear waters of the East Fork River run through the property, and our guests have access to 1/2 mile of it. The 200 acres features the river which is within 300 feet of the cottage and a stocked trout pond. The cottage is located in the heart of the meadow area of Cold Mountain and is within 100 feet of an historic dairy barn (no animals today). The Laurel Cottage fronts a beautiful activity field for soccer, volleyball or chasing fireflies and an apple orchard, small vineyard and raspberry and blackberry patches. (Great for the morning's cereal.) The upper 1/3 of Cold Mountain is very mountainous and guests can hike, mountain bike, ride horses, camp or picnic at 4,000 feet if they wish.

You will need to carefully consider the town that is close by. If you haven't discovered Waynesville, do yourself a favor and check it out. This year, no less a source than the L.A. Times called Waynesville 'the perfect blend of mountain charm and sophistication.' Art galleries, tailgate markets, and an incredible wine store (The Wineseller) all just 15 minutes away. Want to take advantage of something in Asheville? It's just 35 minutes away. We love Asheville, but the truth is it is a city, which is what we believe a lot of people are seeking to escape. Stay in the country, use Waynesville as your anchor town and cherry-pick the best of Asheville's offerings. Now, you're 35 minutes away from Asheville and 15 minutes from Waynesville, but that gives you the payoff of a spectacularly beautiful, riverfront setting. Plus, you are in the direction of something...Pisgah National Forest begins just 5 minutes south of the property and leads you into some of the most beautiful and iconic places in the Eastern US--Sliding Rock, Mount Pisgah Inn, Looking Glass Falls and many more are within 20 minutes for a truly unlimited amount of recreational potential. Finally, Springdale Golf Club (18 holes) is directly across the street for any family members wishing to keep a swing sharp.

We built and furnished the Willow and Laurel Cottages because we were generally disappointed with the quality of both the homes and properties available for vacation rental. Also, being flatlanders from Hilton Head, we had grown tired of those terribly steep properties that have nice views, but nothing to do. The Cottages at Cold Mountain are absolutely unique offerings in Western North Carolina with views, water and lots of room to roam...thank you for taking a moment to consider us. We look forward to hearing from you. We regret that the covenants of Cold Mountain do not permit weddings.

About Melba Ballew

The Cottages are owned by three families, one from Hilton Head, another from Santa Fe, and a third from Hendersonville who came together to create a vacation offering that they had always sought, but seldom found: sufficient beauty, warmth and luxury to restore the adults, but lots of room-to-roam onsite in free pursuit of adventure for kids (and kids at-heart) so that they must be called-in from outside.

Melba Ballew purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Melba Ballew chose Smoky Mountains

We chose Cold Mountain and the Cruso Valley as the location for the Laurel Cottage because it is the perfect balance between country and city living. Any closer to Asheville, and we were not getting our “River Runs Through It” fix; any farther from Asheville felt a little too “Deliverance” or required traversing winding, nauseous roads. Also, our two owners from the popular tourist destinations of Hilton Head and Santa Fe wanted a mountain experience that felt like a genuine getaway, rather than a duplication of their country club environs back home or, worse, the contrived resort-town experience.

What makes this cottage unique

The stage is set for you to create your own experiences. Help a child catch a first fish in the pond. Work with a local chef for a catered dinner on the sunset knoll or pack pimento cheese sandwiches to eat riverside. Tube the river or read a novel start-to-finish in the hammock under the birches with the river flowing alongside. Risotto and your favorite red at The Chef’s Table in Waynesville, or hamburger, fries and a chocolate malt at Jukebox Junction in Cruso. The list goes on and on and we are available to give you as much help as you like in planning activities for a long-remembered mountain vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The M-H Family loved the Laurel and the entire grounds! We loved swimming in the river and catching trout and other fish in the pond! This is truly a magical place where we have made memories that will last a lifetime!

Thanksgiving getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights just before Thanksgiving at the Laurel cottage and it was exactly what we were looking for. We had 6 adults and 2 kids (3 & 6) and the kids loved exploring by the creek and up in the hills. So much space for the kids to be able to roam. The house is very nice and had everything we needed to cook a Thanksgiving meal. We picked this location vs being in Asheville because we did the Polar Express in Bryson City so we thought this was a good in between location and we were very happy we did. We are hoping we can make it back again next year!

Cold Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We visited the home with two other couples in October as the leaves were just beginning to brighten and the air was wonderfully cool. My sister and her family had been there a couple of years ago in May and highly recommended the property, however, I must say, it still exceeded our expectations. I have rented homes numerous times on VRBO, but this with the surrounding property was special. One of our friends is an avid fly fisherman and was delighted by the trout pond. There was an added treat in that there was a golf course across the road. I love photography and the property and it's streams provided me with endless opportunities. The kitchen is well stocked and the high end appliances were put to good use by our gourmet cook. We sat on the porch, watched the sunset, drank a few bottles of excellent wine and enjoyed the company of wonderful friends. It doesn't get much better. We were sad to say goodbye.

Beautiful home and stunning property

  • 5 of 5

We visited the home with another family and had three children three years old and younger. The property was beyond perfect!! The kids had huge meadows to run barefoot in, a pavilion with tricycles and wagons, and tubes to float down the river with their daddy's (too cold for us moms). The house was impeccable and we are already planning our next trip back!!

Truly Magical

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at the Laurel Cottage in Cold Mountain. The cottage itself was perfect and exceeded our expectations, but it is the grounds that really makes this a special place. The swimming hole and rope swing were a favorite, and my daughter caught her first fish (and then many more) at the trout pond, but even just the large fields where the kids could run around were fantastic (and they were filled with fireflies in the evening!). We loved hiking up to the lookout, which provides stunning views of the entire area, as well as just sitting on the porch and taking in the scenery.

Thanks for making this special place available to us, it was beyond what we could have hoped for.

A very special place

  • 5 of 5

The Laurel is an outstanding home. It is beautifully furnished and generously provisioned with necessities not often found in rental homes. The surrounding property is gorgeous and views just melt your tensions away. We shared the home with our son, his wife and our granddaughters (9 and 13) and there was plenty of room. We did some hiking around the property and we enjoyed many games of Scattergories - what a great game! The extra folding table we found in the garage came in handy for doing our jig saw puzzles - a family tradition. We made a trip to Waynesville and the girls loved the Mast General Store and the candy. Another day we drove in to the Pisgah National Forest and visited Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls and the Discovery Center. Both of these trips were lovely. Our favorite activity was just relaxing on the porch watching the Barn Swallows and then, later in the evening, the fireflies. The girls do not have fireflies at home so that was a real treat for them. It would have been perfection if we had been able to bring our Westie with us. She would have loved it! Thanks for sharing this wonderful spot.
