Farmette on the Rock Bound Coast of Maine

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,085 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)

Located in the quintessential Maine fishing village of Winter Harbor, a few miles from the entrance of Acadia National Park/Schoodic Peninsula, a restored antique farmhouse with modern conveniences awaits your arrival. Though close to everything Winter Harbor has to offer -- including one of the oldest golf courses in the nation, with water views from every hole -- this retreat feels like your private getaway destination.

The loft master bedroom and generous first floor guest room together sleep five. The chef's kitchen is appointed with new appliances and a pass through bar/counter, which makes informal serving easy and fun. Additionally, the formal dining area seats six. The comfortable Asian inspired decor blends easily with farmhouse antiques, reflecting the mariner history of the coast of Maine. Outside, the small porch leads to a wrap-around lawn, accented with mature landscaping.

Schoodic Peninsula is the perfect location for your summer outdoor vacation. Kayak, hike or bicycle in nearby Acadia National Park/Schoodic Peninsula Section. Just across the bay from its busier Bar Harbor cousin, Winter Harbor affords a relaxed and quiet retreat from the cares of the world. Wildlife abounds, with frequent sightings of eagles, loons, Canada Geese, deer and more! Buy your lobsters fresh from the boat at the local dock, or take the ferry (in season) to Bar Harbor for a traditional lobstah roll and chowdah lunch. Downtown Winter Harbor boasts an old fashioned 5 and 10 (if they don't have it, you don't need it), a small grocery store, a post office, a community theatre, and a few small bakeries and restaurants.

The closest airport is Bar Harbor (BHB), and the second closest is Bangor International (BGR). More competitive prices can be secured by flying into Portland (PWM) or Manchester NH (MHT).

Bar Harbor is a 30 minute ferry ride or a 40 miles drive by car.

The property was charming, clean and in a great location. You can walk to downtown Winter Harbor and it is a short drive to Scoodic point. Great biking in the area! Nadine was an excellent Property Manager!

We loved it!!!!!!

Clean, updated, comfortable place to stay

  • 4 of 5

This was our first trip to Maine, and this region around Acadia National Park is beautiful. This house is just walking distance from Winter Harbor, which has an IGA grocery store, several restaurants, and places to buy fresh lobster (the house is well equipped to cook and eat lobster, but we never got around to doing it). Schoodic peninsula, part of Acadia, is just a short 10-minute drive down the road, which made it very convenient for taking early morning pictures of the rocky coastline before sunrise. There is a TV set in a cabinet in the living room with a DVD player, and the Internet is more than sufficient for Netflix, so there are plenty of ways to entertain yourself at the end of a day of hiking, kayaking, mountain climbing, etc. The kitchen is well equipped with all of the appliances and dishes you need to make meals when you are not enjoying the great restaurants in Bar Harbor, which is about an hour drive away. The majority of the park lies on Mount Desert Island, and many of the places we visited were about 50-60 min away, but we spent the whole day there anyways, so the drive was not much of an inconvenience. The only suggestion we have for the house would be for window treatments for all of the downstairs Windows and doors, just for the small sense of security it would add when it is dark outside. Overall, this is a great place to stay in this area!

Overall adequate

  • 3 of 5

The king bed mattress was significantly indented and uncomfortable. The property manager came out and flipped the mattress but there was no improvement or follow-up. This needs to be replaced.

This is not a waterfront or waterview property; the photos are misleading.

There is no fire pit anywhere on the property, despite a prior review response saying that one was added; the house was otherwise adequately equipped.

We stayed 7/24/16 and a home is being built next door. The foundation is being laid; the hammering started before 7am.

A dehumidifier or window AC unit should be added. The towels and dishcloths would never dry and the home smelled musty.

Owner's Response: We do apologize for any inconveniences you may have experienced. As explained, we were unaware that during the course of previous rentals the bed had obviously been damaged. We immediately called the property maintenance manager and he removed the mattress and repaired the bed frame to the best of his ability without interfering with the tenants remaining stay. There was another full size bed available downstairs that could have been utilized as well. Per our description on the website we have never claimed to have waterfront or even water views of any sort from this property. We are nestled in a quiet spot just walking minutes from the bustle of the Village of Winter Harbor. It is not unlikely to see wildlife such as deer and turkeys in the back yard. We do list areas of the rugged coast that renters may visit while here and have included pictures of nearby areas to site see. We also have never listed any amenities such as a fire pit. We are less than a 5 minute walk from the ocean, an ocean beach and downtown. We also have no control over any sort of construction or building renovations that occur locally. Our goal, as property managers, is to provide the most comfortable and authentic Maine experience that we can for our renters. We would like to stress that communication is important. We assist and help our renters on as timely a basis as possible. Apart from the bed frame issue, we were not made aware of other issues presented in this review. Our sincerest apologies.

Pretty, quiet and comfy little house

  • 4 of 5

We - family of 4 - stayed in Winter Harbour for 4 nights in early July.

The house is very nice, comfy and cosy. The kitchen is well equipped - though there is no dishwasher. The 'Weber' BBQ on the porch was rather rusty but still usable.

We found plenty of towels and the beds were great!

As the weather was cold and rainy we very thankful for the well working heating system!!

We would highly recommend a stay in this cute little house, very relaxing.

Peaceful scenic area

  • 4 of 5

We find late September is an excellent time to visit the Maine coast, and this was a perfect location. Hiking in

Schoodic Peninsula area of Acadia National Park was amazing with both old and newly created trails. The residence

on Summer Harbor Road was very warm and inviting. The location was just outside the village which made

for easy walking for shopping and meals when walking was the chosen mode of travel. A quiet, peaceful location

well kept with plenty of interior room.

Great place not too far from Bar Harbor!

  • 4 of 5

Nice, cosy and comfortable place, an hour from Bar Harbor but very close to a part of Acadia park with great biking roads and views. Very quiet area but at the same time very close to the center of Winter Harbor

Not recommended for people with mobility problems (the stairs to go up are very steep!); there is a television set but no channel available (but we didn't need one so no problem here!). We liked the peace and comfort of the place, very relaxing!
