Kid friendly, adult friendly, everyone was happy on our little vacation to Juan dolio ! Could not recommend more!
Thank you, my dear guests. I am very grateful that you helped me install the streaming TV system :) It was an honor and a joy to have you at home and I hope you visit Marbella again. Preferential prices for you. You are a lovely family.
Great apartment - relaxing stay
We stayed for 2 nights only and I wish we could have stayed longer. The apartment was very comfortable for 4 of us, beautiful beach / pool and fast internet. There are nice restaurants across the street from the complex. Melvin was easy to work with, excellent communication via Whatsapp.
Thanks a lot for this nice review! It was a really pleasure to have you and your family in Marbella. I am very glad you enjoy your stay. Yours,
great condo and very attentive owner
We spent a month and enjoyed it very much. Our owner was very attentive--he arranged for a cab to pick us up and return us to the airport. He checked in to make sure that everything was OK and gave us advice on restaurants, etc. Very enjoyable establishment--safe and clean.
Great space and view!
We stayed 6 weeks in December and January. The view and pictures are exactly as presented.
Melvin was helpful with information as this was our first visit to the Dominican Republic. He also met us on arrival to show us his unit. The tv and Sono sound system were all great! Restaurant at the pools was good as well. The building complex is well maintained on a daily basis as well as the beach area. Washer and dryer in the unit was a real plus for a longer stay. Weather was 80's daytime 70 at night. We would not of needed the air conditioning except that some flies and mosquitos appeared after some of the heavier rains, and there are no screens. I am sure they do not normally need them as we were told the rains were unusual for our time of stay. There were just a couple of minor issues with the condo that Melvin was addressing after we let him know, but they did not bother us enough to mention further here. Marbella is the nicest complex that we saw on our beach walks. Security is heavy but we really didn't see any issues anywhere in Juan Dolio, even walking after dark. The local restaurants of Sal Marina (our favorite) Paladart, El Meson, Giuilia's, Bistro and MBG (US comfort food!) were all good and within walking distance. There are also two small grocery stores within walking distance but if you want a larger selection you will need to rent a cab to San Pedro. $35 for trip and one hour at Jumbo. Car rentals across the street are $50 a day but unless you have good insurance I wouldn't recommend it! The driving is like nothing we are used to seeing. Any vehicle can be going in any direction on any street at any time when you get into the towns! This is a family atmosphere, especially on the weekends when owners arrive to get away from the city. We enjoyed seeing and hearing the kids have fun but if you are looking for an adults only spot this isn't it. If you are coming from the US for the first time this is NOT the US! Spanish is the language spoken here, VERY little English so be prepared to use a translation app to try and get by. That is not their fault it is OURS! The culture in the DR is more laid back. Trash along the streets and stray dogs fighting at night are not a big concern. Sit back, relax, and enjoy their culture!
seem like a beutiful properly
a couple days ago I reached Melvin Pena the property owner to mention I send him a message. He mentioned the days where available and suggested I send him the payment to his personal account. I mentioned I had already process the payment in the Home away from home website. I advised I was waiting on him to approve. Melvin who has been very responsive became unresponsive claiming he was out of town. He then reached back and mentioned the apartment was already taken by someone else as he had difficulties retrieving the payment from Home Away From Home. Please be mindful prior to booking properties at this website as some home owners like Melvin may seem to have issue retrieving payments asking to send to them directly. Melvin seems like nice person but I preferred using the website a instructed however that did not work out.
I am very sorry about your bad experience during the payment process.
Some months before your reservation, Homeaway didn't allow online payments for owners in the Dominican Republic. Now, they do and the client can pay and do a preliminar reservation. Of course, the owner can accept or decline it, but I didn't know how to deal with the new process. Unfortunately, meanwhile I explored it, your reservation expired and another client took the apartment, given the fact the period you requested was a peak season (Easter).
I beg your pardon again.
Juan Dolio and its neighbor beach town Guayacanes are for those who seek a couples or family restful vacation but like being able to take many excursions. If you are staying in Juan Dolio, you are equidistant from the culture, shopping and dining and nightlife of Santo Domingo, great beaches, scuba diving and other attractions in La Romana, and just half an hour away from busy and crowded Boca Chica. The small towns of Guayacanes and Juan Dolio are following the shoreline.
Juan Dolio has a boulevard and a main street where most hotels and restaurants are located. So you can walk, jog or cycle in safety here. This destination is perfect for those looking for a quiet escape with the comforts of home.
What else is nearby?
Almost anywhere you could possibly want to go is accessible from the coastal highway which cuts through the town of Juan Dolio and follows the shoreline. Villas Del Mar is an area of Juan Dolio where many restaurants and all-inclusive hotels are located. Going west from Juan Dolio you’ll find the fishing village/beach town of Guayacanes, then the pretty cove-like beach of Playa Caribe, followed by Boca Chica about 20 minutes from Juan Dolio. Santo Domingo is less than a 40 minute drive to the west of Juan Dolio.
About 15 minutes further east is the baseball city of San Pedro de Macoris, home town of Sammy Sosa. Shopping is good in San Pedro at the Jumbo store. Another 40 minutes beyond that is the La Romana/Bayahibe area, two interesting touristic destination.
Everybody walks in Juan Dolio. The beach road is quiet and has very little traffic.
Those seeking action can head for the area's casinos, discos, 18-hole golf course or participate in the water sports programs offered by the many large all-inclusive complexes.
The Cueva de las Maravillas should be included in every visit. Down under, browse at the very good collection of pre-Columbian art amidst spectacular stenography created with lighting against stalagmites and stalactites.
Guided tours are an excellent way to experience this region, since there are relatively few attractions within walking or busing distance. Some of the excursions available are: Jeep Safaris, Santo Domingo City Tour and Half Day Tour, Santo Domingo Night Tour, Altos De Chavon artists village/River boat ride, Cueva Fun (and its seven-kilometer long underground river), Los Haitises and the mangroves park, Saona and Catalina Island.
A reputation for excellent cuisine has taken hold in Juan Dolio and Guayacanes. Sophisticated palates can choose from a variety of fine restaurants ranging from informal to casually elegant, even a few with noteworthy wine cellars. Italian restaurants and steak and seafood abound here. Since most restaurants cater to domestic vacationers coming in from Santo Domingo, prices in Juan Dolio are attractive all year round.
Some recommended restaurants are:
El Meson (Spanish cuisine and seafood)
El Sueño (awarded international cuisine and seafood)
Paladart (ideal for breakfast)
El concón (excellent Dominican cuisine and seafood)
Cococane Beach (French cuisine)
Madera Wood Café (bar restaurant with life music during weekend)
There is nightlife primarily at the hotels but this is not what you would call a “party hearty” destination. Take time out to visit the many restaurants in the area and mingle with the crowd that lives there or commutes in from Santo Domingo, especially on weekends.
