This property has a very interesting history: the canal 'Geldersekade' was the first expansion off the original 17th Century Amsterdam lay out city-walls - Relics can be found such as The Schreierstoren and The Waag on Nieuwmarkt, that mark the opposite ends of this canal. From 1664 to 1725 a series of small warehouses were built to serve the expanding population with supplies like wheat and salt from abroad. You will be staying in one of those rare, well preserved lots - officially a Dutch State Monument in this Unesco protected area!
Feel that historical vibe if you gaze over the lively canal and adjacent bicycle path from the top floor open balcony, and see it in the bricks of the 300 years old bedroom walls... but also enjoy the modern interior!
This is an excellent location, just 5 min walk from Amsterdam Central Station (15 min by direct train from Schiphol International Airport) and Oosterdok Parking (cheap public parking garage 10 min from circular highway A-10). Subway station is only 3 min walk, bike rentals on 5 min. Amsterdam Passenger Cruise Terminal is on 5 - 10 minutes - so this location is perfect for a few additional days in the city after your River / NorthSea Cruise too!
For daytime, take a canal tour, visit a museum like Van Gogh or Rijksmuseum that are within 20 min by foot, tram, subway or taxi. Relax some moments during late afternoon on one of the many NewMarket bar-terrasses (Nieuwmarkt) in our very street, or have a drink at home enjoying free WiFi, laptop and LCD-projector for your convenience (Note: no landline phone and regular TV-set available here - you can watch internet-TV channels if you like, or just go out and speak to others:). Note for travelers form US, UK, Swiss: you might need a mains adapter for your electronic equipment.
For evenings and nights, rest assured the neighborhood is safe to go out - the public and locals are nice, and aggression of criminality is seldom seen in this area. You find lots of international and local restaurants nearby, and moreover the famous, innovative 1 Michelin * Star restaurant Lastage on the ground floor of this very building, just had its 5-year anniversary.
Bars and nightclubs are abundant, and the famous Red Light District is just a few blocks away, although the area can be easily avoided if you or your family are not interested; all main historical and cultural hot spots in town can be reached without having to cross the red light area.
The new cosmopolitan creative, dance and music hotspot ADAM tower just 10 min by free public ferry across The IJ-river.
Of course, we would very much enjoy advising you to pick a choice of everything Amsterdam day- and nightlife offers, by an updated A'dam-Highlights document you will find in the apartment and actual comprehensive documentation an suggested internet-links to that.
The A.D. 1700, 55m2 apartment offers modern comfort: a fully equipped kitchen, living room with canal view, a separate bedroom with 160*200 size 2 pers bed in the quiet back of the building, a neat bathroom with over sized shower. This place is very convenient for 2 adults; however the small loft upstairs (a vide overlooking the livingroom, accessible by a steep stairs, size of a small bed) and the sofa in the livingroom sleeps an additional 2 children, making the apartment typically suitable for a family. Therefore, equipment and furniture is sized for 4 persons. Note that we prefer couples / families as renters (with children is o.k. of course). We do not or seldom host groups of 3 or 4 adults (friends or 2 couples), as the space is not really suitable for that.
Please note that the apartment is strictly a non-smoking venue, and no pets allowed! Also, the common stairs to this top floor apartment (3th floor) are very steep and narrow with just 100 cm width (with 1 handrail); so unfortunately this place is not suitable for disabled people and do take your time getting your heavy suitcases up (we will assist you upon check-in) or consider to bring 2 lighter suitcases in stead of 1 heavy over-sized massive bulk. On the other hand - all original restored canal warehouses feature this type of stairway and it is part of the 17th century experience in itself.
Here is small suggestion for your convenience: you may want to arrange a PIN code on your creditcards, as most restaurants, ATM's and shops require a PIN with each creditcard payment. Visa and Mastercard is widely accepted; American Express and Diners Club are not. For US/CND phones: consider to buy a SIM-only prepaid card at Schiphol airport or at Central Station.
So if you are looking for an unprecedented place to stay in the very center, with optimal comfort an luxury - please check the reviews and consider if this is your choice.
Note: as off January 2015 the Amsterdam Municipality recently introduced an obligatory tourist tax of 6% on the negotiated rate per person per night staying via services like HomeAway. You will see this as a separate line in our quote. HomeAway owners that do not calculate for this tax risk closure of their premises and substantial fines. Amsterdam uses this money to invest in facilities and services like the handy IAMsterdam website and your cheap public transport passes.
