Steps from the warm sands and magnificent Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica. 4 bedrooms/2 bath.
The first floor Master Bedroom is bright and airy. French doors open onto a large wooden deck and over looks the garden as well as Ocean.
The room has a full entertainment system, TV, Wireless, as well as ceiling fan and standing closet. Second Bedroom is easily converted from Kids room to Guest Room to Writer's Studio (a few of our guests have written books here).
Open living and dining area accommodates large families or cozy small ones. Warm yourselves by the original Sandstone fireplace....
The 2nd story has 2 bedrooms and a TV room that can convert to a sleeping quarter making 5 bedrooms total. There is a min-kitchen upstairs as well so the units can be separated to form two distinct apts.
* the upper apt can be rented on its own.
The house was originally a single family. it was converted into two diff’t apts – one apt on each floor and we have now brought it back to one single family (upstairs and downstairs). However there are still elements from the two apt layout. We can rent the two bedroom apt upstairs on its own ($1600 per week) or the entire house. Its really great for large families or multiple families vacationing together.
To be clear.....
downstairs: master suite (with King size bed, french doors that open to upper outside deck) , full kitchen, great room (dining/living room w. TV), second room with Full size bed and mini bunks
Upstairs: 2nd master (king size bed), additional room with twin size bunks and a Queen size bed., den/tv room, office area, small european-style kitchen
Air Quality or Allergies: We are just off the Beach. The wind off the ocean keeps the air quality incredibly clean. The ocean emits enormous amounts of Fresh Oxygen. We have kept our house free of Mold as well.
A short walk gets you to wonderful 'mom n' pop' restaurants, boutique shopping, wine bars, ice cream, panini sandwiches, Health Food Store, coffee shops. Eclectic Venice Beach is also a walk away with its craft booths, incense vendors, painters and colorful street performers. Also very close to trendy '3rd St Promenade' with retail chain stores (Abercrombie and Fitch, The Gap, etc) and Movie Theaters, Jazz clubs, Bars, Discos, etc. Disneyland, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, Hollywood are a car ride away but not close enough to feel like you're caught in a tourist trap.
This is an old turn-of-the-century home. It's not 'perfect' - that means if your kids happen to make a crayon drawing on a wall - we're not worried, just clean up. The house is over 100 years old so there is some natural wear and tear. But we did a complete renovation (inside and out) when we purchased in 2000. The house is completely kid safe and protected. This is not a 'party house' - we want you to have a wonderful visit but if you plan to have loud parties, this isn't the rental for you. Street parking only with preferential parking pass. We welcome you to have a friend stop by to look at the house or we can send more info/pix if you like.
A very nice young couple occupy another apt on the property. You will probably never see them as they have their own entrance down a separate side of the house. They are warm and wonderful and very quiet.

The Owner purchased this house in 2000
The house is situated in a very safe environment. Neighbors walk around regularly with their dogs and kids. Its a bit like the West Village or Haight Ashbury neighborhood only much more quiet. Its a great for teens who want their 'freedom' but still make you feel like they wont get in too much trouble
I can't say enough good things about this property and its owners. It was the perfect place for our family meet up to visit my sister and brother-in-law and their new baby (who also stayed in the house). The owners (and the property manager) were amazingly hospitable and welcoming. The house was roomy, warm and had a perfect, relaxing family feel. My kids (2 under 5) loved the bunk beds and Curious George books. My two year old even slept in a bed for the first time the whole week with no problems (which I attribute to the good karma of the house).
The location is perfect, perfect, perfect. As an East Coaster, I like walkability which is hard to come by in LA but this house was a block away from Main Street which has coffee shops, ice cream places, restaurants, nail salons, shops and a lot of other cool stuff. It's also walkable to some cool places in Venice and a very short drive to Abbot Kinney, the 3rd Street promenade, etc. It was also very close to the beach and walkable to the Venice Boardwalk (where we rented bikes) and the Santa Monica Pier (about a mile or so North). There was even a playground on the beach about 5 minutes away from the house.
I've used VRBO many times and this was one of my best experiences. I don't think you can ask for a better location for a vacation in LA. And you can't ask for a nicer, more responsive owner. If you want to stay in a place that makes you wish you lived in Santa Monica, this is the place. I would highly recommend!
We stayed here in 2015 for nearly 3 weeks and couldn't have been happier with the location or the facilities. We celebrated a birthday, an anniversary and the 4th July and experienced the best of Santa Monica and the beach within easy walking distance of this property. It was well equipped and laid out and was very sociable for nights in as well as accessible for tourist trips during the day. Would definitely come back!
Me, my fiancé and my three teen children spent a week in the Lauer house in Santa Monica. The house is worth the trip in itself, and the hospitality and graciousness of the family made us feel as if we were in our own home. There were five of us and there still was plenty of room for a couple more. We all had our own space. The house is an exceptional charm, appointed wonderfully, and the location by the beach in Santa Monica is hard to beat. The family makes you feel like you are in your own home, and there is so much activity going on in that area which makes it great for a family - PCH, Santa Monica beach, the pier, so many restaurants, the 3rd Street Mall etc. And it is very close to LAX...We will definitely try to stay there again on our next trip back (from Florida). It was definitely the best VRBO experience we've had (and we've had several).
Thanks again Andy and all.
Our family enjoyed our California Christmas! We picked a perfect spot to call home for a week. The house had plenty of room for friends and family with a great deck and back yard. Main Street has some super cool places and being able to walk there (and to the beach!) was a huge plus.
Dear Lauer Family – thank you for opening up your home while we came into the area for a family wedding. We were very comfortable, loved the location, learned more about eco-friendly living (hope to take back some learnings to Indiana) and enjoyed looking at your pictures and imagining your family laughing and playing and living here as we did. Thanks again!!
"Thank you Lauer Family for letting us use your house – a lovely easy place we enjoyed while here for my brothers wedding. Your family looks lovely and we tried to keep our footprint gentle. The wedding and family time your house allowed us to have wonderful and will be treasured. Many Thanks Again! ."
We had a great time at your house. Thank you so much. We enjoyed the short walk to both the Santa Monica beach and Venice beach, and cool Main St. My husband especially loved the local coffee shop (Espresso Cielo) just down the street. This was a great way to see our daughter who was living in the dorm at UCLA for the summer. And we were so happy that we were able to bring our puppy to stay as well. He enjoyed the charming backyard.
We felt comfortable and cosy during our stay. We especially appreciated the nice kitchen, the wireless, the lovely Master bedroom, the beautiful deck. If we are back in Santa Monica we would definitely stay at your home again and we would absolutely recommend it to others.
