For about 17 years, We owned the (ahem) coolest gift shop in the islands..(itw).. We sold it this Spring, and we are looking forward to experiencing Life In Paradise with our Kitten Kismet, Our Toys, And Our Amazing Array of Friends, Oh, And Family:)
Wendy purchased this house boat in 1996
The minute I laid eyes on this place, I had to Have it. I still owned a house that hadn't sold yet, so I knew there was No Way I could afford it, -But, I Had to Have It!!! So, I didn't sleep for 5 days and nights, and I thought and thought and finally came up with...Well,... Since we work seven days a week all summer ,.....Anyway,... IfFWe moved back to the Boat, for the summer,... and Shared The Joy,.... Well, Otter Magic was born!
And, Yes, it is hard Sharing... But so much magic has been made here through the years! We have many repeat visitors, and several adventurous folks have even Moved to the Island after Enjoying The Adventure of Otter Magic. We Know you will enjoy it, too
Whether sitting on the deck or Looking out the windows- The view is ever changing.starfish, crabs, fish, otters, kingfisher, great blue heron all are our neighbors in our little house by the sea
Recently, myself and three of my best friends had the opportunity to spend two nights on Otter Magic. From the parking lot, as we approached the floating home we were in love and once we walked in we were so happy that we decided to stay here! In fact, when it came time to leave, we did not want to go. We spent two glorious nights eating fresh lobster courtesy of Rick and Wendy, drinking wine, watching the family of otters play right off of the back deck and spending quality time with one another. Thank you Rick and Wendy for your hospitality and we hope to come back sooner than later!
My daughter and I just spent 8 wonderful nights at Otter Magic!! We had a blast! The whole place was spotless when we got there and was equipped with everything you could need. Rick and Wendy went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We don't get to travel a lot and traveling alone for the first time I was glad to have them around. I felt very safe the whole time. They were around to answer any questions we had and also gave us some great suggestions on places to go. I would recommend Otter Magic and Friday Harbor to anyone wanting an adventure. The scenery is beautiful and the people are all so friendly! BTW, we really did see otters!! I would get on a plane right now and go back if I could! :)
This place was perfect! what a great place to stay right on the water. It was so cozy. We would do it again.
I've been to Friday Harbor many times in my boat and have always loved it as a boater. For my recent trip without a boat, I wanted to give my girlfriend as close to a boater's experience as possible. That's when we found Otter Magic. This review will detail how it exceeded my expectations in every way.
Accommodations: Otter Maginc is a "float home" which means it is a not a boat, but rather a compact apartment floating in a slip next to other boats in a marina. This pictures are accurate, the "bow" (front) of the home features a sitting room (seats 4-6) with lots of windows and views of the ferry and the main marina. Mid-ship is the galley (kitchen) and head (bathroom) with jacuzzi tub/shower combo, and to the stern (rear) is a TV room with a sofabed. Up the ladder/stairs (not typical stairs) is a queen bed and a sitting room. My favorite part of the float home were the outdoor areas: the bow has patio chars perfect for enjoying the outside while watching the incredible view, and the stern has a barbeque where I did all of my cooking. Everythng you could possibly need is already on board, so your provisioning should be limited to main food items. There is a stereo system on board that I connected an iPod to for background music when we wearn't listening to sounds of the marina. The bed was super-comfortable and there are windows and doors that you can use to regulate air flow pretty easily.
Location: Otter Magic is in a perfect spot for vacationers who want privacy but also want the marina experience (readers who are boaters know what I am talking about). Nestled into the closest slip to the shore, the port (left) side of the home is mostly lush vegetation; the starboard side faces the dock in such a way that the stiing area and patio are almost completely private. You can draw shades on the windows for complete privacy if wanted. The cost for this privacy is a ten minute walk into town.
What I liked about Otter Magic: NO BUGS! We stayed in mid-August and kept the windows and doors open most of the time. It has "barn-style" (upper and lower half) doors on the main and upper levels and provide great ventilation. ITS A BOAT. I liked the varnished wood throughout, and although we didn't use it this trip, the pot-bellied stove/fireplace in the sitting room looked really inviting. PRIVACY: You don't have the boom boxes or drunken sailors that I always seem to get assigned next to in standard marinas.
Cons: We had to leave. Otter Magic was magical.
My wife and I just returned from a great weekend in the San Juan Islands. We stayed at Otter Magic and couldn't be happier with our experience there! The houseboat is about a 10 minute walk from the Friday Harbor ferry and is definitely a great option for walk-on tourists. We brought a car and a couple of kayaks which we were able to set right on the back deck of the houseboat and launch right there for some great sunset paddling! How cool is that?
The houseboat itself was very comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. There's a great market in town for buying whatever groceries you might want (Wine, cheese and crackers for us!), and of course great restaurants within easy walking distance. For those who haven't stayed on a houseboat before, you need to understand that this isn't a hotel room. Living on a boat means everything is compact and the quarters are a little tight. A previous reviewer complained about walking to the marina bathroom. There is a full bathroom on the houseboat with a full-size jetted tub. But it is narrow, so if you're more than a little "broad in the beam" it may be a tight fit. This can also be said about the staircase to the second floor (bedroom and atrium). Think closer to a ship's ladder than "normal" stairs. People who are unsteady or have mobility issues may want to consider other accommodations. There are 30-40 stairs to get down to the dock and the ramp can be steep at low tide. All of these things are normal parts of marina and houseboat living and add to the charm! The place was very clean and comfortable!
As for the owners Rick and Wendy, they were absolutely delightful and went out of their way to make us feel at home. They were very sensitive to our privacy but also willing to chat with us when we engaged them. They are good people, what more can I say?
The highest recommendation I can give is telling any perspective visitors that we wouldn't hesitate to go back and spend more time on Otter Magic. It is truly a one of a kind experience right on the water in a beautiful setting. You won't regret spending time here!
Just back from our tour of the Northwest and our stay on the houseboat. Who ever coined the phrase "location, location, location", must have stayed on Otter Magic, because it was truly magic! The salt air, the ocean breezes, coffee & cocktails on the deck, and cozy interior made us re-think hotels forever. Also, the close proximity to town was great. Wendy thought of everything; kitchen was well stocked, as well as the head, and bed ultra comfy, with beautiful linens and down comforter and pillows. We slept with the door open each night, through the night and absolutely loved it!
