Our stay was amazing! We were hoping for a quiet, peaceful getaway in nature and this space delivered it. We read reviews for a hiking trail nearby as we brought our dogs with us. Many warned about the biting flies, a common staple in wetlands areas, and so we brought along netted beekeeper's hats which made all the difference. Without them, I think we would have struggled at dusk and dawn each day as the bugs are very active. So are the rest of the beautiful geese, birds, deer, rabbits, hawks, bald eagles, and a multitude of other creatures. I could see this being an amazing family getaway for a wetlands immersion lesson, Magic School Bus style. :) Other reviews have covered how great of a spot this is for onsite fishing and nearby hunting so I'm hoping to share the other perspective as we had a great time just enjoying the scenery. There is a lovely gazebo outback that is screened in. We enjoyed breakfast here and birdwatching. The drive in takes you down a winding two lane road with the wetlands to either side. In some spots the road does flood over completely but you can drive through it slowly. At night this scene was beautiful with the full moon reflecting off the water. The house has everything you could possibly need and a beautiful simplicity to it. I appreciated the decor so much - there are many antique elements so be mindful if you bring pets or kids. Comfy bed, hot shower, internet and well-equipped kitchen.
Very nice home with close proximity to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Very quiet and peaceful. The instructions were very simple and clear. Thank you so much!
House extremely clean on 12 acres near Blackwater Wildlife loop. Flooded roads made navigating challenging but nothing that couldn't be overcome. Rental of bikes and kayaks nearby.
Listing and photos accurately describe accommodations. We were comfortable and satisfied. A nice rural location for perusing outdoor activities - fishing, hunting, boating, paddling, birdwatching. Good parking for a boat trailer.
My 14-year-old son and I booked this house for a last-minute, 4-day, get-back-to-nature trip centered around fishing. And we couldn't have found a better spot. Andy, the host, was as helpful and generous as could be with information and guidance, even arranging a fantastic night-fishing trip for us. The house is set up generously with kitchen, cleaning, and linen supplies, which made for simpler packing and much convenience during our stay. The property is totally comfortable and easy to manage, with laundry, WiFi & TV, lots of places to sit and eat. And the location of it in the nature refuge makes it feel like traveling to another world altogether. The pond next to the house was awesome for fishing, and there is lots to explore in the area for other nature experiences. We were excited to find the listing, and the reality of our trip was even better than we'd imagined it was going to be!
The property is best reviewed in four components:
1) The House. It's great for anyone who just wants to get away from the world. Simple. Clean. Has all the stuff in it you normally expect (linens, towels, forks, pots, pans, internet, etc.) The matresses could maybe stand an upgrade, but the water pressure is great and it even has a massage chair!
The Property: It's unique. It's big. There are visiting sitka deer and other types of wildlife. Bring muck boots if you plan to wander beyond the driveway.
The Pond: AWESOME! Fishing is what we were there to do. We caught more bass and snakehead in that pond than we did at any other area we visited. Hope it stays that way.
The Commute to the Property: We weren't expecting the main roads leading to/from the house to be flooded ALL THE TIME. It seems to just be the way things are down there. Be prepared for 6-8" of standing water on the roads. It can catch you off guard, especially if you find out at night.
OVERALL: I catch wait to bring my kids to this place. If you have littles you want to teach how to fish, or just want quiet quality time with family, this is a great spot for it.
