About Karen Vander

We have had a gallery in Boothbay Harbor for 41 years. We fell in love with this cottage, bought it and renovated it all that Spring. It was a fun project and hopefully these rentals will help us recooperate our investmant while giving our guests an unforgettable experience here in the region we love and call home!

Karen Vander purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Karen Vander chose Maine

The cottage sits across the street from Lobster Cove and Linekin Bay and adjacent to a gorgeous park. The cove is where the windjammers anchor the evening before Windjammer Days. It's like stepping back in time by 150 years. The area is peaceful yet only two walking blocks from the east side of the harbor where the working waterfront is situated. Saturday night you can usually find oysters to enjoy for a buck a shuck and some of the best seafood on the planet. The air quality, quiet location and vista's are worth a million!

What makes this cottage unique

Besides quiet streets for walking without traffic and an elegant park right next door, this Harbor offers a thousand things to do including the largest botanical gardens in the Notheast, a historic railway and antique car museum, several live theater venues as well as the historic Opera House which feature world class musicians and comedy, and a YMCA with healthclub/cardio room, olympic pool and every other type of class a person could ask for. The restaurants in the region are superb. There are fishing charters, whale and puffin cruises, Island hopping boats and schooners to sail. There's also a top-notch golf course here in the region and new tennis courts all less than ten minutes from the cottage. You'll need weeks to do it all. The fall foliage is a knock out and boothbay Harbor is only ashort, yet beautiful, drive from Sugarloaf which boast a world class Robert Trent Jones golf course and the higest vertical drop ski mountain on the east coast

Great location for walking into town or jumping off to other activities.

  • 5 of 5

We hiked, sailed, motored by boat and car, shopped and ate all within 25 minutes. There are so many wonderful preserved public lands to explore.

This cottage is a central place from which to start.

There are steep steps to get inside which is something for some to consider. But of course climbing means you have a wonderful view of the water. We had a very enjoyable time.

Perfect family vacation, walked into town everyday

  • 5 of 5

An adorable cottage with an amazing location!! Stayed here with our 3 year old daughter and 2 month old son. Walked the beach across the street during low tide, spent time everyday at the park across the street and walked into town everyday for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just an ice cream. Karen and her husband are extremely friendly. Started the vacation off with Karen handing me a glass of prosecco when meeting up with her to get the keys at their art gallery in town. We came the week of the 4th, we walked to the church lawn about a 1/4 mile from the house to watch the fireworks across the harbor. In the future I'd like to stay during windjammer week which was the week before. Looks like they have a lot of activities that would have been fun. Could not say enough good things about this cottage and the location!

Wonderful Boothbay Harbor Cottage in Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful 4 weeks in Buttercup cottage! From the very first conversation I had with Karen on the phone, I knew we had made the right choice. The cottage is in a perfect location-easy walk to town for shopping or restaurants, the Best park right across the street, and what an awesome view of the water from the cottage deck! We had most meals out on the deck and so enjoyed watching the lobster fishing boats catching what could be our next meal! Buttercup has all the amenities you could need or want and is very comfortable!. John and Karen, the owners, were so accommodating, kind and helpful-pointing out things to do, places to eat and making sure we had what we needed. We were so satisfied with our stay, we have already made reservations for next summer at Buttercup! Can't wait to return!

A Wonderful Week to Remember!

  • 5 of 5

We were extremely pleased with our stay at the Buttercup cottage! Clean, comfortable and roomy with an outdoor deck overlooking beautiful Linekin Bay. Plenty of linens, kitchen utensils, pans etc made our stay quite comfortable. We picked up lobsters/steamers from the local fish pier on two nights and had everything we needed to cook them at the cottage and enjoyed our feast while sitting on the deck! The bed was quite comfortable. Although there is no A/C, we enjoyed the cool breezes off the bay in the evening. There are two fans available if you should need them. We brought our kayak and were able to bring it across the street to Barrett's Park and kayak all around the bay. The cottage is within walking distance to town, maybe a 10-15 walk. The owners couldn't be nicer and were happy to point out all the great local places to visit. Their recommendations for dining were spot on! We had a wonderful week exploring Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor, a day at Monhegan Island, kayaking to Burnt Island light house, Maine's Botanical Garden and the many hiking preserves with well marked trails nearby. Don't forget to go to Wiscasset and lunch at Red's Eats. An awesome lobster roll experience!! The lines start early, be prepared. Buttercup had all the comforts of home. The eclectic decor was fascinating and tastefully thought out and displayed. Each day, I'd notice something that hadn't caught my eye previously. We would highly recommend a stay at Buttercup. We look forward to a return visit in the future. There's still much more exploring of Maine's mid coast to do.

Owner's Response: One of the best bonus's of owning Buttercup is meeting our guests and making lasting friendships. We love the Boothbay region and want our guests to share our joys, adventures and experiences, whether it's a trip to the highlands of Monhegan Island, tasting our found chanterelles, or looking at in a new way, we try and share our Maine experiences with anyone who cares to listen. All our lives seem to be richer for this. So many of our guests are new to this part of the world and we hope they pass this way again because of Buttercup and their memories of Maine and this region.

A Wonderful Week in a Peaceful and Comfortable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My only regret about my week at Buttercup Cottage was that I could not stay for a second week. The cottage is in a wonderful location, quiet but close enough to town to bike or walk if you are choose. As others have said, the cottage is cozy but as a single traveler, I was very comfortable. There are lots of windows and very comfortable furniture. Buttercup's owners, Karen and John, have decorated the cottage with interesting artwork and accessories and abundance of towels and kitchenware. They are a phone call away if you need anything and more than gracious and interested in your comfort. The cottage offers a perfect mix of old and new. The wifi worked great and I appreciated having a phone with long distance at no charge as my AT&T wireless phone does not work in many places in the town.

The cottage is directly across the street from Linekin Bay and I hope you are lucky enough to see the huge heron fishing for his dinner in the early evening. Barrett Park is practically at your doorstep so don't miss spending some time there. The kitchen is huge and there is a big fridge and stove if you want to prepare meals here.

I have been to Boothbay Harbor several times and this trip exceeded my expectations as I had everything I could want - serenity, comfort, salt air, delicious meals and meeting my new friends, Karen and John, who made my visit more special than they could possibly know. Will I return? Without a doubt.

Tranquility Abounds

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at the Buttercup. The cottage was so tastefully decorated it felt like we were at home. We brought along our Yellow Lab who enjoyed her daily swim at Barrett Park. The 4th of July fireworks display over the harbor was spectacular. The owners Karen and Jon were just such amazing and helpful people, The area is beautiful- the view from the deck as well as the park is incredible. We also spent a day at nearby Reid State Park in Georgetown which has a beautiful beach. The only thing missing from the cottage was AC but the breeze from the bay was enough for our stay. I would highly recommend this property for anyone wanting a truly relaxing and peaceful vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown harbor area.

Boothbay Region is famous for it's fishing and lobstering. There are unique oppertunities to go out with a lobsterman and haul traps, or just photograph the nice, strong lobsterman hauling traps. There are also several schooners and a friendship sloop that go out on charters from the harbor, which is a short walk from the cottage. Buttercup has two mountain bikes so you can tour the region and smell the roses and salt breezes at the same time.
