About this property

Amazing historic 1800s Carriage House!

Summary:
Historic Carriage House

This charming historic home, originally built as the carriage house for the main residence, dates back to just before the turn of the century. As one of the early structures in Raton, it holds a special place in the town’s history.

At that time, the town was known as "Willow Springs," a name that evokes its rich past and connection to the early days of Raton. Today, the home stands as a beautifully preserved piece of history, offering a cozy and unique stay that blends timeless character with modern comfort.

Due to the age of the structure, the floors creak with an antique charm and are not perfectly level. Rather than being a drawback, this adds to the home's personality, telling a story of its survival through the years. It’s truly amazing that this historic gem has not only endured but is now ready for you to enjoy!

The Space:
The Carriage house is a quaint little brick cottage built in the late 1800’s. It has been thoroughly renovated with updated appliances, furniture and finishes. Thoughtfully updated to maintain its historic charm and add modern amenities. We've added fiber-optic wifi, mini split heat, and air, recessed LED lighting, a 5-burner gas range with oven, flat screen smart TV, and lots of original art!

It is still an old home! It squeaks, makes noises, doesn’t have perfectly plumb and level walls or floors. It’s small, it is also pretty amazing that it is still liveable 140 years after it was built.

Guest Access:
You will have private access to the entire 2 level home. There is a large grass yard that you are welcome to use and hang out in as well as a private patio with table and chairs for 4. We recently added a Blackstone flat top barbq grill that is also available for guest use!

The Neighborhood:
If you want coffee, just down the road is Sage coffee, (great coffee clean updated space) or for a more historic spot head to 111 Park. Neat little shop with lots of history.

If you're wanting some recreational fun-times, Climax Canyon Park is our Nationally awarded trail right in town! (801 Apache Ave) To get there, take 2nd street to Apache Ave, Apache will dead-end into the parking lot/trailhead. After you park your vehicle, walk through the gates to get to the actual trailhead. The short loop is 1.5 mile, or you can do both loops fro a 3 mile easy-moderate hike. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.

Another recreational opportunity is Sugarite Canyon State Park - there's a small day-use fee for motorized vehicles, and camping. Lake Maloya allows boating/kayaking/fishing and day-use. The trail system offers beautiful views, streams, and remote hiking opportunities. A fishing license is required if you're wanting to fish. You can purchase this at Super Save Grocery Store at 1271 2nd st.

Super Save is THE grocery store in town. Open until 9pm - 7days a week.

Want Pizza, wings, salad, beer & wine? Check out Bruno's Pizza and Wings at 133 Cook ave. (Closed on Tuesdays, but otherwise generally open until 8pm- 9pm on weekends).

Colfax Ale Cellar (Brewery: wine and beer): 215 S. 2nd. (Closed Monday, 2-7pm on Sundays, Tues-Thurs 5-9, Friday 5-10pm, & Saturday 2-10pm). They don't serve food (other than snacks), but you can order from Brunos and they'll deliver to the brewery for free.

Want Mexican food? Visit Casa Lemus at 350 Clayton Road (generally open until 9pm - sometimes 10pm on weekends).

Want a full bar/tv's, or a place to take the family for dinner? Check out Mulligans Restaurant at 473 Clayton Road. They have a big menu with lots of options (Generally open until 9pm).

Movies: El Raton Theatre (115 N. 2nd) or Shuler Theatre (131 N. 2nd). Generally showing only Thursday- Sunday. Visit the El Raton website for info for both Theaters.

Getting Around:
No über or Lyft available in town... yet. Fingers crossed that we get a driver or two in the near future! We do have door dash, if you prefer to stay in. It's a small town and easily walkable to the main historic 1st street. The Amtrak station is only a few blocks away and easily walkable as well.

Interaction with Guests:
Please reach out with any questions! Txt is the best. We live on a ranch 40 miles away and are generally not around during stays. Service in this part of the world can be spotty at times. Please be patient with us, we will respond as quickly as possible.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

We love staying in the Amazing Historic 1800s Carriage House! It is the perfect home away from home and we always try to get it when we know our July travel dates. Nathan, the host, and Karen, the housekeeper and very accommodating and made sure every need was met. Bonus: The bed is so comfortable.

Sugarite Canyon & Capulin Volcano Base Camp

This property is a great location if you’re going to go hiking in Sugaright Canyon or Capulin volcano. The Oasis and Pappas’ Sweet Shop had some of the best green and red chili I’ve ever had! The dinosaur tracks at Clayton Lake were also impressive!

We enjoyed our stay at the Carriage House

The Carriage House was perfect for our stay in Raton. It was clean and well supplied with everything we needed to cook our meals and relax after being out hiking and photographing. The neighborhood was quiet which was important since we were out making night sky images so needed to sleep in the morning. Communication with Nathan was always timely and pleasant. We look forward to staying here again next time we are in Raton.

Adorable Carriage House!

We LOVED the house, the host, everything was as expected, and we really appreciated how comfortable everything was. While it was cold, the house is old and it was expected. I will definitely stay again when I come back to Raton to visit my family. Five stars!

They did a lovely job restoring the property, very nice especially upstairs. Small suggestions: Shower and bathtub upstairs doesn't drain properly, eventually goes down. The toaster doesn't work, you have to hold down the handle, screen door could use repair. Otherwise a nice experience, loved sitting on the lawn.

A step back in modernized time

Nice, clean,1900's building with updates as required for comfort. Safe neighborhood, 3 to 5 deer in the yard several times a day. A great place to stay, barbecue pit and grill in the imaculate yard. Parking in lot at yard gate, easy access to unloadon arrival and load for departure. We had a small issue and the housekeeper was there in less than 10 min. Nathan, the owner,, solved the problem and scheduled a repair tp insure that no other renters will have the issue. Nathan is a very good busi nessman. We will be back.

About the host

We have been Air BnB hosts for years with 900+ reviews and are just now jumping into VRBO.
We live on a cattle ranch east of Raton with our 3 adventurous boys. We ride motorcycles, bikes, and horses. We chase sunset pictures and explore abandoned old places. We travel, climb mountains, and jump in the water every chance we get.
I am an artist working in multiple mediums. Some of my favorites are steel, stone, and light. I have an art gallery in the town of Des Moines, which is a 1920's service station that we saved from certain ruin. It is now modern, light, and filled with art!
We have been in the hospitality business since 2005 when we started offering all-inclusive, guided outdoor adventures on the ranch. We have met tons of interesting people, many of whom have become lifelong friends.

Why they chose this property

This is a historic neighborhood, it sits in a mixed-use area both commercial and residential. Although It is right on the main street through the town of Raton. The Carriage house sits at the back of the property which makes it feel pretty secluded. Raton was once a hub of excitement with horse racing, neon signs, and vintage motels. That heyday has passed but we are doing our best to usher in a new era of artists and revival!

What makes this property unique

This little house was likely living quarters for the hired help to those who owned and lived in the big red brick Queen Anne Victorian (our Second Story Listing) right next door. It is my favorite of the 3 homes on the property. It's small, historic, quirky, and beautifully updated.
