Modern cabin - private mountaintop location, hot tub, outdoor shower, fireplace
Perched atop 10 private acres bordering national forest, The Steel Nest is a modern mountain retreat designed for slow mornings, fresh air, and long evenings spent outdoors.
Surrounded by trees and complete privacy, this architect-designed cabin offers a front-row seat to nature. Spend your mornings sipping coffee as sunlight filters through the woods, the afternoon exploring the property or nearby trails, then unwind with a soak in the hot tub as the sun dips behind the mountains.
With no neighbors in sight and miles of protected forest beyond, it's the perfect setting for couples, friends, and solo travelers looking to reconnect with nature without sacrificing comfort. This is a spot to soak up the fresh forest air, spend time outdoors, and enjoy the cooler evenings that settle in after sunset.
The outdoor spaces were designed to help you slow down and enjoy the surrounding landscape, whether you're reading in the shade, sharing a meal outdoors, or spending an evening around the fire.
HIGHLIGHTS: - Private hot tub nestled among the trees - Outdoor fireplace with seating for relaxing under the stars - Screened porch overlooking the forest canopy - Open-air outdoor shower with views into the national forest - Weber propane grill for outdoor cooking - Bocce ball court - Private walking trail through the property - Exceptional stargazing and wildlife viewing
One of the most memorable features of the property is the outdoor shower. Tucked away in the back of the home and facing the national forest, it offers a uniquely peaceful experience - whether you're rinsing off after a hike, cooling down on a warm summer afternoon, or simply enjoying the feeling of being immersed in nature.
As evening settles in, gather around the outdoor fireplace with your favorite beverage, listen to the sounds of the forest, and watch the stars emerge overhead before ending the night with a soak in the hot tub beneath the trees.
The Experience:
The Steel Nest is a place to disconnect from schedules, screens, and distractions. Spend the day hiking, reading on the porch, cooling off in the outdoor shower, soaking in the hot tub, watching wildlife move through the forest, or simply enjoying the rare luxury of uninterrupted quiet. The cabin does not have air conditioning, which is part of the mountain cabin experience here - many guests enjoy opening the windows, letting in the fresh forest air, and spending their days immersed in the property's outdoor spaces before settling into the cooler mountain evenings. For those who wish to stay connected, fast Starlink WiFi provides reliable internet for remote work, streaming, and video calls. Whether you're looking for a true digital detox or simply want the flexibility to answer a few emails before heading out for the day, you'll have the option to do both.
Inside the Cabin:
Walls of windows bring the outdoors in, filling the cabin with natural light and expansive forest views. The interior is thoughtfully designed with clean architecture, comfortable furnishings, and inviting spaces to relax after a day outside.
The fully equipped kitchen includes Keurig, drip, and pour-over coffee options, while the handcrafted live-edge dining table provides the perfect place for shared meals, games, planning the next day's adventures, or lingering conversations late into the evening.
Comfortable, Thoughtfully Designed Bedrooms:
Upstairs, two peaceful bedrooms provide a restful retreat after a day outdoors.
Primary Bedroom:
- King bed with premium linens - Vaulted wood-beamed ceilings - Expansive forest views - Cozy sitting area - Roku TV
Second Bedroom:
- Queen bed with premium linens - Soft natural light - Tranquil woodland views
A convenient half bath on the main level includes access to the outdoor shower and across from it is a dedicated laundry area with washer and dryer.
What We Provide & What to Bring:
We’ve stocked the cabin with essentials to make your stay comfortable from the moment you arrive, including linens, towels, paper products, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. You’ll also find starter coffee supplies (K-cups, creamer, and sugar) along with a selection of basic pantry staples.
For longer stays, you may want to bring additional supplies to suit your needs, but what’s provided will comfortably get you started and often lasts through a long weekend or more. If you plan to enjoy the indoor wood stove or outdoor fireplace, please bring your own firewood.
A Note on Comfort & Mountain Living:
The cabin is designed to embrace its natural surroundings, with no air conditioning by intention. Thanks to the elevation, surrounding forest, and walls of windows, the space stays comfortably cool for most guests - even on warmer days - while evenings bring in crisp, refreshing mountain air.
This is a place to open the windows, listen to the sounds of nature, and experience the rhythm of warm days and cool nights. If you enjoy fresh air and a more connected, natural environment, you’ll feel right at home.
For those who prefer consistently cold, climate-controlled temperatures (especially for sleeping), this setting may not be the ideal fit. Here, comfort comes from the mountain breeze, not the thermostat.
To ensure The Steel Nest is the perfect fit for your getaway, please review the following details about the cabin's unique character:
- Embrace Nature: There are no window coverings in the cabin, allowing you to wake up with the natural light and fall asleep under the stars. - Hot Tub: We drain and refill the hot tub between each stay for cleanliness. It may take until the evening of your arrival for the water to reach its target temperature of approximately 102 degrees. - Mountain Air: The cabin does not have air conditioning. The cool mountain air and evening breezes typically keep the space comfortable, but please be aware that it can get warm on summer afternoons. - Unplug & Connect: There is no TV in the main living area to encourage connection and relaxation. The only TV is located in the primary bedroom. - Cozy Acoustics: The open design means sound carries between floors—perfect for conversation, but something to keep in mind for your group's privacy.
OUTDOOR CAMERA: There is an outdoor camera facing the parking area as well as a trail cam at the entrance gate. They are on 24/7 and can record video and sound.

This was the perfect cabin for a much-needed weekend away! It was so secluded and so quiet! The heated floors made the whole cabin feel like we were wrapped in a cocoon. Perfect for a cold winter weekend! The cabin is as beautiful as the surrounding forest. The host was lovely as well. We loved it and can't wait to come back!
Across many different vacation home rentals we have experienced over the years, perhaps none have provided my wife and I the peace and joy that Alison’s beautiful cabin has. The fact that this was our fifth (?) stay confirms our endorsement of this cabin. I understand that this home was designed by a Charlotte architect and those thoughtful and quality details are all around you. The cabin exudes a stylish comfort and warmth and the secluded location and hot tub make for a serene setting. For the self-sufficient traveler who enjoys not seeing neighbors, cooking a great meal and enjoying a nice glass of wine by an outdoor fireplace in a home with elevated design and details all around you, you have found your next vacation home rental. Also, Alison ranks as an all-time favorite and responsive host with great local knowledge and we look forward to our next (6th?) visit.
Fantastic cabin! Very clean when we arrived and truely private, no neighbors in sight. The worst thing I could find was a light out above the grill. My wife will definitely be back to this cabin.
This is a hidden gem! We did not want to leave! The privacy and the sounds of nature made this place one we will continue returning to. The host was very kind and responsive. Thank you for a great time!
What a wonderful and amazing house in an even more amazing location! If you are looking for a peaceful getaway surrounded by nature this is definitely the place to be.
The Still Nest is just beautiful! My wife and I love to find new fun places to stay for overnight get away, but few check all the boxes for us. This place does though! Quite, hot tub, fire place, full kitchen, no close neighbors and uniquely decorated. We loved our stay and will defiantly be coming back. Thanks Alison!
Our stay was amazing. The cabin was everything it was advertised to be and Alison ensure we had everything we needed to have a great weekend away. We’ll definitely be staying here again.
We love this property! Spend the day visiting and hiking at Mount Rogers and the evening relaxing in the hot tub. If you want to unplug and unwind, I highly recommend visiting the Steel Nest!
It was a beautiful house. So peaceful and perfect for what I was looking for. It was our 25th anniversary. It was a great spot to reconnect. Would happily return one day.
Awesome! Quiet, secluded setting was just what we wanted. Spent a lot of time in the screened in porch and the hot tub. Was worried with no AC in the middle of a hot July, but was comfortable especially at night with a nice breeze thru the many screened windows. Has everything you need, perfect vacation! (Also, make sure to see the wild horses)
Would recommend this stay again and again, it was a very fun experience. However the surrounding darkness in the woods is there. Be aware. It made it fun for me and my s/o. We had a blast being here.
Loved our fall stay in this gorgeous cabin. The indoor spaces were cozy and serene, with everything we needed for cooking simple meals at hand. Loved the outdoor spaces - grill, screen porch, fireplace area, and hot tub all wonderfully designed, in working order and easy to use with clear instructions provided. Owner was friendly and communicated throughout.
This cabin was everything we were looking for. Secluded and peaceful, it felt like we were truly tucked away in nature—but still close enough for great daytime hikes. The space was clean, serene, and thoughtfully designed with a beautiful blend of modern rustic charm and natural elements. We especially appreciated the small touches: warm floors to step onto in the morning, the refreshing mountain air gently blowing through the cabin, and a fully stocked kitchen that made it easy to cook almost every day. The hot tub was a dream after long hikes, and the bright, airy upstairs was a lovely place to unwind. This place strikes the right balance of comfort, style, and tranquility. We hope to return.
The house is very thoughtful in its construction. Simple ,Modern and rustic all.at once. Bocce ball court is a great addition we enjoyed playing. Trail around property was perfect for afternoon walks. We loved it. Oh and guitar was an added bonus as well.
