About this property

Farm House on Working Vineyard Near Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville

A renovated 19th century gem, the Cardinal Point Farmhouse is located in Afton, VA, and has impressive and unimpeded views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This five bedroom historic farmhouse is located among the vineyards of Cardinal Point Winery and is conveniently located near several other wineries, breweries, a cidery and a distillery. Stunning views of the Blue Ridge mountains abound, from the house, and especially from the pool. Enjoy relaxing with a book on our screened side porch, on the front porch swing or in the hammock. We hope you'll find our family home a welcome retreat from your daily grind.

The house has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and sleeps ten guests (plus two more at an additional cost of $75/person/night). A large, bright kitchen area filled with natural light, complete with a built-in bench along the wall, makes entertaining while cooking a breeze. The kitchen has custom cherry cabinets, butcher block countertops and is designed with the amateur chef in mind. There is a double sink, a gas stove, two ovens, dishwasher, side-by-side refrigerator with an ice and water dispenser, a wine refrigerator and a bar sink. Off the kitchen area, our comfortable living area has a full sofa and a love seat. A nice wall-mounted 43" Smart LED HDTV and DVD player will make relaxing easy. Wifi is available through Dish Network satellite service.

If you are more in the mood to unwind and enjoy views of the vineyard and mountains from the indoors, you can sit in our glassed-in side porch. Wicker furniture affords comfort as you raise a glass of wine to the spectacular Blue Ridge.

Dining areas include a breakfast nook right off the side entrance and a formal dining room off the kitchen. The breakfast nook table seats four but has a leaf that can be added so that six may use it. The formal dining room table seats six with a leaf increasing seating to ten people.

There are two bedrooms on the first floor as well as two full baths. The master bedroom has a queen size bed and connects to master bathroom, which has double sinks, a shower and a jetted tub. The second bedroom has a queen size bed and connects to a newly renovated bathroom with shower. This bathroom also has an entry in the front hall, and is equipped with a pocket door so that guests can access the powder room while the shower is in use.

Upstairs, you will find three bedrooms, a full bathroom and a library. One bedroom has a queen bed, a large dresser, and a wardrobe. The second bedroom has twin beds and a seating area. The third bedroom, with a queen bed, opens onto a balcony with a seating area and 180 degree views of the vineyards and mountains. Wonderful Weekend
My family and I loved our time staying at the Farm House. It's a beautiful property, especially sitting in the backyard at sunset. The house was built in the late 19th century, but it so cozy and comfortable. The heating, air, plumbing, etc all worked great. One side note, there are only small travel size shampoo/conditioner/soaps, so be sure to bring your own if needed. Easy driving distances to many wineries and restaurants in Charlottesville. This is a great option for anyone looking for a weekend getaway in the country with close access to nearby towns and amenities. Would love to come back again!

Such a Gorgeous View
The house was perfect for our group of 4 couples. It had everything we needed, and the location at Cardinal Point Winery is amazing. I expected the view to be good, but it was much better than advertised. You really feel like you are away from it all, even though there is a full winery, and the rest of Route 151 very close. We will be staying again next year.

Cute and cozy
This is definitely an older house but suited our needs just fine. It's such a cute and cozy place with plenty of parking when you have several couples meeting up. It's also a great location for exploring the mountain, breweries and wineries in the areas. The owner is very responsive and very nice!

Beautiful, restful spot.
We stayed in this beautiful, old farmhouse for my son’s graduation from UVA. My only criteria was a place with 2 main floor beds and baths for my parents and mother in law. It’s got a lot of charm, any possible kitchen gadget you could want for, tons of nooks and crannies for privacy (note: if you are looking for an open floor plan, this is not your place). The grounds are beautiful with vineyards and the mountains in the distance. We were a bit off season for the pool, but it was well maintained. Rustic, charming, quirky. Great place to congregate with family.

Wonderful Weekend Getaway
There is something so special about staying at the Farmhouse! You cannot beat the views and charm of staying in this house. My big family and I had such a wonderful time here. We cooked several great meals in the fully stocked kitchen and enjoyed being able to walk to Cardinal Point. I cannot wait to come back in the future!

Lovely even in the raIn
Hurricane Ian tried to ruin our Fall visit with rain but we still had a blast just hanging around the house and playing games. On the last might, we were treated to a beautiful, dramatic sunset to the west of the house and a full rainbow to the east. Views from the house are so wonderful and everything you need for a nice visit is in the house.

Wonderful as always
We are quickly becoming regulars. The farmhouse is charming, spacious, and comfortable. The vistas from the yard are stunning. The pool is a great bonus and the winery below the farmhouse is a great place to spend the afternoon. Perfect location. Other nearby wineries, breweries, distilleries, golf, tons of really cool stores. Just a great stay, as always.

Local bachelorette getaway
We were a group from charlottesville wanting to do a local getaway for a bachelorette. This place was so incredibly beautiful - the pictures do not do it justice. It was absolutely stunning and so charming and we felt like we were a million miles away instead of 30 minutes from home. We didn’t leave the house all weekend and had a great time enjoying the pools, the views and cooking.

Beautiful Sunset Views
Nothing can beat the sunsets we enjoyed while staying at the Farm House. The pool was also a highlight as it was an easy activity for the kids on days we were just hanging out at the house. We met the farm dog, Tenny, who was full of energy! And what can be better than a 4 minute walk down the hill to the tasting room at Cardinal Point Vineyard!

What a way to spend celebrating 50 yrs!
My just parents had their 50th wedding anniversary and we decided to spend it together touring around some wineries for the weekend all together. We found this GEM of a house and it fit our needs perfectly. It has a large kitchen and dining room which was perfect for our cooking and entertaining too. I’d highly recommend staying here!

About the host

Hosted by Susan Gorman

Host profile image
Years ago, while stationed in the small city of Bad Kreuznach, Germany on the banks of the Nahe River, Paul and Ruth Gorman discovered a passion for the Riesling wines that were crafted with care in the little vineyards surrounding the town. It was then and there that they decided to add their own vineyard to their retirement plans. While stationed in Panama, Paul and Ruth came up to Virginia to look for a property to which to retire. The property has been an apple and peach orchard in the past, as well as a sheep farm. Although the building was rather shambling, the Gormans bought it knowing that it could be restored to something beautiful.

In 1985, Paul retired from the army, and they moved to their farm in Afton, which they called Cardinal Point. Their first order of business was to install the first four acres — two acres each of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon — on what is now Cardinal Point Vineyard. While eldest son John, a graduate of UVa's architecture school, oversaw the renovation of the old farmhouse on the property, daughter Sarah and youngest son Tim tended the vines while home from school during the summers.

Tim took over as full-time Vineyard Manager in 1989, and has grown the Vineyard to 15 acres, supporting a variety of vinifera. In 2002, Paul and Ruth finally realized their dream of erecting a winery on the premises. Tim now adds wine making to his farm duties, and the rest of the family share responsibilities in the enterprise. We are proud to have Cardinal Point on the property, and we hope you will enjoy what it has to offer.

Why they chose this property

The Afton and northern part of Nelson County is a beautiful and very special place. It is conveniently located just 25 minutes from Charlottesville and 15 minutes from both Waynesboro and Crozet. There is so much to do in our area and so many natural resources to take advantage of, that we think you will also enjoy your stay at Cardinal Point.
