Where to begin... the biggest issues were the property being filled with black mold and the attitude of the host. We checked in, saw black mold all over the place, but since it was late (9:30pm), decided to spend one night. We texted the host, and told them we would be leaving early the next morning, thoroughly explaining the reason. We photographed mold in the linens, at the air return vent, in individual rooms air supply vents, on closet walls, etc.The host at first apologized the evening we reported the issue, but after we vacated at 7:30am the second day, I repeatedly called, emailed, texted, and used the VRBO messenger to try and contact the host. The phone number listed goes straight to some automated system, and no person ever answered. The host uses either multiple "assistants" or some kind of AI bot to respond. We offered to pay for the night we stayed and all applicable fees, but the host did not respond for 36 hours (Wednesday evening at 10pm). When the real host finally responded (and not his assistants or AI bots), he refused a refund, saying there was not an issue, we were in violation, we didn't give him enough time to clean up the mold, and that we somehow violated the rental.I kept photographs, call logs, and screenshots of his responses, and then called VRBO Thursday morning with all of our issues. VRBO took the issues seriously and refunded us the remaining portion of our stay, minus the night we agreed to pay for and all of the normal fees.
