Hard to imagine a better time

  • 5 of 5

I'd like to say it was terrible, maybe that would keep readers away so that the property would be available the next time we want to travel, but the truth is it was magnificent. The property was modern, clean, well furnished and situated in one of the more beautiful places on Earth. For those who want little interaction with other humans, this place is ideal. Our host, Alpheus was attentive, but we didn't trip over him. Every need was met in a complete and efficient way. We use VRBO frequently. This property was clearly the most outstanding that we have visited.

Very nice house in secluded location

  • 4 of 5

The house is very spacious and nicely appointed. Alpheus is a terrific host. The island is much less developed than Provo, but if you want to get away this is the spot. The house is on the water which is nice and has kayaks which can be launched right there. But there is no beach directly in front of the house. However a short walk to the end of the road is a magnificent spot which you would all to yourself. Ideal for swimming, snorkeling and fishing.

Our family of 6 really enjoyed seeing and experiencing these other islands and the lifestyle. We also did one bonefishing trip with an excellent guide and the drive to mudjin harbor is well worth it for the beach and lunch or dinner.

Great Return to North Caicos

  • 5 of 5

We have been to North Caicos now 5 times and have stayed in 5 different properties. We spied Emerald Estate while on a boat trip with Big D. I had been trying to find it for over 2 years. It is a beautiful home that is very private but still quite safe. It is right at the end of the road to the right from Horse Stable Beach. Directly in front of the home it is a little rocky but 2 min walk to the right it turns sandy. The mouth of Bottle Creek is in this area so you can snorkel or Kayak in Bottle Creek inlet as well. We did this and saw lots of fish and Stingrays.

Just across the inlet mouth is the most spectacular sand bar that comes out when the tide is low. We spend two afternoons there just playing around with kids. Lots of Buoys to find and other sea treasures.

We know Provo, North and Middle Caicos very well. The only thing we stop at grocery store in Provo for is Bread, Milk and fresh fruit such as Strawberries,Blueberries and a couple watermelons. Everything else that you need you can get at stores on North Caicos. Either Dards or Niques. If you email Dards your list they will get what ever they don't have ahead of time for you. The meats such as chicken, beef and pork will be frozen instead of fresh but it is still great. Groceries get restocked on North Caicos on Monday night so best choices are Tuesday mornings. All the alcohol products you need are in the Liquor store next to Niques and MyDees. Don't bother getting this at provo. Things that are expensive that you can bring with you are dry goods like cereals, cookies, chips. Also pack your own Olive oil, spices, peanut butter/mayo, jam etc. You can get all this stuff no problem but it is just more expensive than normal even on Provo.

You need a car if you want to get the full experience and enjoyment of North and Middle Caicos. The nicest beach by far on North is Pumpkin Bluff. At one end is 3 Mary's Cay and the other is the actual Pumpkin Bluff. You may see a couple people on it but that is the most. It is more sheltered when wind is higher and it is pretty shallow. Bombara beach is great for little kids when the tide is low. Directly in front of the colorful shacks there are tons of little shells to snorkel for.

Alpheus was great. We knew our way around so he did not have to spend much with us but he gave us contacts for Spring Taxi at Airport and made sure we had everything we needed like a phone, wifi, other contacts etc. House is very well equipped, clean and the beds are great!

Absolutely majestic!

This was an amazing place and home to unwind and getaway from the real world! Five of us were more than comfortable in the house and the views are to die for! WOW! Beds and bedding were comfortable, very nice washer/dryer so plan to pack less and do a few loads of laundry instead. Kitchen is pretty well stocked including a blender +used the BBQ grill a few times. This was our first trip to TCI and decided to VRBO after looking into hotel and resort prices in Providenciales. We were so happy in this house! The owner Alpheus will help you with arrangements (taxi company to use, ferry times, rental car) or personal recommendations for food and activities which is a big help because North Caicos is a quiet place with not a lot of options so it's nice to know where to go.

Helpful tips: bring your own snorkel gear if you can(we paid $60/person for a weeks rental), rent the kayaks from Alpheus and go out the back to the mouth of Bottle Creek and into Bottle Creek exploring, keep windows and doors closed to keep out mosquitos, wear bug repellent mornings/evenings without hesitation, plan on cooking most of your meals and bring your own spices, buy as much food/liquor/beer (and a few gallons of water)from Provo as possible (it's more expensive and less choices on North) - also especially fresh fruit and veggies and meat! (Local store had only 72%lean hamburger in a tube for example)

Places we snorkeled: out the back and the mouth of Bottle Creek at the end of the peninsula - BEAUTIFUL! (we did this a few times), Three Mary Cays is pure eye candy (around the back of the first/closest Cay to where you park was a nurse shark and several barracuda), Sandy Point (walk north a ways from where you park), Bambarra Beach on Middle (not much here but fun for kids). We heard Mudjin Harbour was a good place too but we decided to stay at the house more than venture out so we didn't make it there.

We ate at Aquatic- the snapper was delicious and Sasha was THE NICEST PERSON we met on our trip, LOVED her! Also ate at My Dee's for BBQ night. Daniel's Cafe (on map) is now closed, Last Chance Bar &Grill is closed for the summer - remodeling. Also nearly everything is closed on Sunday so plan to eat in!

Alpheus gives you a local cell phone to use with a few minutes prepaid, you can load more minutes if you want. We used our own cell phone provider Verizon and purchased the international plan for a month (they offer a daily plan as well).

You will not regret a stay here!

Paradise by the sea!

  • 5 of 5

We loved Emerald Estate. The perfect island getaway. The villa is spacious and comfortable. We have spent two weeks in North and Middle Caicos and seen all that those islands have to offer. The beauty of North Mouth, which is just a 3-minute walk from the villa, rivals any of the "must see" locations touted by the travel brochures. While there is no beach immediately in front of the villa, the beautiful, isolated beach at North Mouth more than makes up for that minor drawback.

This part of the island is secluded. There are 3 other villas along this strip of land, but they are spaced far apart. During our 8-day stay in April, we did not see a another person at or near our location. (Emerald Estate is accessible only by two rough dirt roads, so I'd recommend renting a compact SUV for your stay.)

The owner, Alpheus Gardiner, met us at the ferry, escorted us to the villa, and put himself at our disposal for the week. He even arranged a "rescue" for us when we got a flat tire on Good Friday, when most of the island (including our car rental company) was shut down. He made a phone call on our behalf, and we had a replacement car within 45 minutes.

Alpheus also invited us to his restaurant, The Aquatic. where we had some delicious meals prepared by the Jamaican chef, Sasha. She serves as chef, waitress, and barmaid, and she made us feel welcome each visit.

The only negative worth mentioning was an interruption of internet service for the last 3 days of our visit. The villa has a portable wifi hotspot which was not fully "topped up" when we arrived. As we use very little data, we did not want to pay the $50 charge to have it reloaded. It wasn't a big deal for us because we were trying to remain "unplugged" anyway. However, if if the internet is your thing, or you know you use a lot of data, you should probably discuss this situation with Alpheus before you book. (Data access, like everything else on T&C, is expensive, but I think it ought to be included in the price of the rental.)

Let's close on a positive note, though. Emerald Estate is a perfect place to unwind and get away from it all.

Secluded Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful 15 days (Feb 21, 2017 - March 8, 2017) at Emerald Estate.

It was our third time to Turks and Caicos, and it keeps getting better and better!

As soon as I spoke with Alpheus, I trusted him immediately and knew he was caring and genuine.

The property and house are exactly as pictured - the house is private and secluded, as well as, clean and spacious. Alpheus would check on us from time to time to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed.

There is a bit of rock that meets the ocean behind the house - where we kayaked and snorkelled; but there is plenty of sandy beach not far to the left of the rock front and a small beach further off to the right. We liked the beach to the right better because during low tide, we could walk out quite far - even to the other island!

We had all the utensils and cookware we needed at the house when we prepared our meals. Spices and water were provided, as well as bathroom tissue. We bought most of our groceries from the IGA on the mainland before we ferried over to North Caicos - both Alpheus and Al, of Al's car rentals met us at the dock. We were able to restock with the main items from the two local grocery stores that were not far away from Emerald Estate.

We ate at the Aquatic Restaurant. We had ordered the local fish prepared by Sasha, thank you Sasha - so very good! She had to contact the owner (Alpheus) and he had to go out of his way to bring more fish just for us! Thank you again, Alpheus!

We had plenty of sunshine to relax, snorkel, swim, shell hunt, and explore North Caicos. We visited Mudjin Harbour, the bat caves, and walked hours on secluded sandy beaches. There is fishing, snorkeling, boating, and other island tours available for booking on North Caicos as well.

if you like seclusion and quiet island life, then Emerald Estate will not disappoint you. You are in good hands with Alpheus.

Car: necessary

North and Middle Caicos are the two largest islands in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Traditionally, these two have been the heart of the farming and planting in the country. Old cotton, sisal and sugarcane plantation ruins can still be seen today. A causeway connects both islands, so they function as one large island.

Most of the main roads on North and Middle Caicos are paved. Due to the remote locations of many of the attractions on these islands, it is advisable to take plenty of drinking water with you. Because North and Middle Caicos get more rain than the other islands, mosquitoes are sometimes a problem. Mosquitoes in the Turks and Caicos are not known to carry any disease, but they can be a big nuisance, so be sure to bring Off or a similar bug repellent with you when you visit.
