This newly renovated cottage is located atop a hill overlooking the Wild and Scenic Westfield River surrounded by state forest and protected land. Wildlife abounds and we are a birder's haven. Many a morning you can watch mist arising from the river. Walk out the door to hike, mountain bike, snowshoe, or ski in the woods. Groomed cross country ski trails are nearby. Notchview Reservation, 20 minutes away has in my opinion the best XC skiing in Western Massachusetts. We are located midway between The Berkshires with its many cultural activities and the Pioneer Valley, home to the five colleges: U Mass, and Smith, Amherst, Mt Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges. The cottage sleeps four (1 BR for 2, 2 built-in twins by the wood stove). The kitchen is fully equipped. The owner lives on the property in the main home near to the cottage.

Wonderfully quiet, secluded and clean. Ample room for 3 tall adults.
The setting was beautiful, even in the rain. Enjoyed the wildlife, views and colors turning on the trees, even though it was wet. The kitchen has all the pots and pans we needed to cook and there was ample cutlery and crockery. Really appreciated the basics being available - complementary coffee and Maple Syrup. The bathroom was perfect too. Thank you John for taking care of us. Hope to return on another visit to the area.
Peaceful, picturesque, clean.
The clearing cottage is lovely. Our second annual mom's weekend away was wonderful. Thank you, John.
This is a wonderful spot for a weekend get-away. Comfortable with all the amenities and lovely views over lawns with gorgeous trees to the distant hills. We'll definitely return!
Our stay at The Clearing could not have been better. Beautiful weather and the cottage was well appointed. We thought the interior pictures did not do it justice. We would definitely return again.
The house is great but we had several disturbing ‘visitors’
This is such a lovely spot and the house is beautiful and exactly as described but we encountered 3 snakes in the bedroom during a 3 day stay which was pretty unsettling.
It turns out that the owners were aware of the problem and didn’t seem to be too concerned when we contacted them
Since then they have emailed us to let us know that they are going to hire an exterminator.
I am sorry for this encounter and the matter has been addressed. The services of an exterminator has been obtained. A snake had appeared once before only on the porch. They are harmless juvenile Northern Ring Necked snakes common here in Massachusetts. They prefer moist conditions and recent heavy rainfall may have brought them out. I intend to continue to monitor their presence hoping that they're gone.
A cozy removed hideaway
We spent a very nice week there. Everything was as advertised. We enjoyed the "cement pond" though it was little brisk there in late June. The wood stove kept us warm and cozy when the weather was less than nice. Opened the windows and the dutch farm doors when it was nice. Breathed in some of that fresh clean air! The screened porch was incredibly handy. We lived on sandwiches and fresh strawberries from The Creamery which is only a couple of miles away. It's a great hideaway, getaway but a tad remote from places like Northampton or Pittsfield. It's a special spot and very relaxing. The no TV was s nice respite from the ills of civilization. If you're serious about cooking regularly you might want to bring your own equipment. There's tons of plates but cookware and utensils are not great but serviceable. The knives were pretty dull. The place was a very good size for me and my husband, plenty of room to put "stuff". We're cyclists and were able to store our bikes in the garage with no worries. All said it was just what the doctor ordered.
