About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Welcome to our Moab cabin. We love the great outdoors and adventure. By fact that you are here, we know you do as well. We tried camping with tents and sleeping bags when we were younger, and while, we respect those who enjoy camping we discovered that the creature comforts or lack thereof made the difference in our partnership with Nature. At our last family camp out and after burning a hole in our new eight man tent and burning my hand with our new gas lantern scrambling inside to escape a Summer rain I looked at my wife and asked if she was having fun. Reviewing the muddy mess of our camp kitchen and inevitable cleanup she thought a moment and said “No…are you?”

That was in the early 1990s and we subsequently set a plan to interact with Nature on more comfortable terms. Creature comforts and isolated from the hubbub of crowds, our cabin offers an escape from the city and stress of everyday life. Unique to the arid geology of Moab the cabin has:Three bedrooms. Comfortable soft down comforters,

• Two full bathrooms. Linens included.

• Hot showers, running water after a day of adventure

• Modern kitchen with all the kitchen gadgets

• Fire pit for roasting smors (subject to fire restrictions by the forest service)

• Fifty-two inch flat screen with family oriented inventory of movies

• Good cell phone service

• Wrap around deck with Spectacular views

• Low light pollution. Night skies within the darkest triangle in the continental US

• Hiking/biking trails on property and nearby

• Rustic Charm

• Isolated from crowds, a half-mile private lane into cabin.

• Warm days, cool nights

• Parking for large vehicles and trailers. (A meadow)

Located off the Sand flats road on the Wilson Mesa at 7300 feet elevation the cabin is a perfect base camp for visiting the area’s attractions. Near the trail heads of Porcupine trail, Kokopeli trail, slick rock, (world famous as the best mountain biking and hiking spot in the USA) and Finns N Things. The cabin is close to Moab’s Famous off roading and mountain biking locations, which include Arches national park, Canyon lands, Warner Lake, LaSal mountain range, and Castle Valley. Available for short (3 days 3 nights) or long (1-2 week) vacation stays. 1700 sq. feet of modern convenience but still a cabin. Restriction Notice. All off road vehicles including motorcycles need to be trailered into property and trailer-ed out of property. No off road use within the parameters of the half mile lane into the cabin.

Breathtaking views of the LaSal Mountains from one deck, the Moab rim from another and Arches national park from yet a third.13 miles from Moab and the Colorado River. No light or sound pollution; you will experience peace and quiet. Starting at sunup and lasting all day, humming birds vie for nectar from feeders on the porch. Sometimes so many they perch on your shoulder waiting their turn. Please watch the video above and check photos from cabin adventures. Read some of the testimonials/references from previous guests. Click on our blog link below to view more photos and excerpts from other guests. Call or email today to check availability as the cabin generally reserves 4-6 weeks in advance. We welcome you to the area and Susie and I are genuinely pleased that you are considering the cabin for your get away. We promise you won’t be disappointed, on the contrary you will have a vacation to remember for life.

About John Lundberg

I am a dirt biker, my wife is a hiker. We both love the outdoors but require the comfort of a good bed, hot shower, full kitchen and clean restroom to enjoy it. I have ridden my dirt bike all over the rocky mountains and in particularly the Southwest US. Moab is by far my favorite spot. The diversity of the trails is unparallelled . From above the tree line, inside Aspen forests, pines and then the red rock desert of the valley is spectacular. World famous trails are too many to list but they abound in the Moab area. My wife hikes as many miles as I ride just not as fast. Her favorite trail in the world is slick rock. We enjoy having the grand kids visit, explore and seek adventure during the day then watch a family movie at night with hot cocoa. Restriction Notice. All off road vehicles including motorcycles need to be trailered into property and trailered out of property. No off road use within the paramenters of the half mile lane into the cabin.

John Lundberg purchased this cabin in 2008

Why John Lundberg chose Utah

I spent years traveling to Moab pulling a trailer full of dirt bikes, stayed in motel after motel and finally realized I liked the area so much I bought the cabin in order to base camp out of it for all our activities. Restriction Notice. All off road vehicles including motorcycles need to be trailered into property and trailered out of property. No off road use within the paramenters of the half mile lane into the cabin.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is near the trail heads of Porcupine, kokopeli, whole enchilada, finns n things among others. We can ride or hike from nearby the front door to some of the most beautiful vistas in the world. The cabin is very private, sitting at the end of a 1/2 mile private lane. We never tire of watching the sunset from the Castle Valley Overlook. Restriction Notice. All off road vehicles including motorcycles need to be trailered into property and trailered out of property. No off road use within the paramenters of the half mile lane into the cabin.

Stunning location. Needs some TLC.

  • 3 of 5

The location of this cabin is unique. Way up in the mountains above Moab with fabulous view. Sadly a previous owner put a large shed partially obstructing it.

However there are some things you should know before deciding to stay there. It's about an hours drive from town whichever route you take. Southern approach is easier but longer. Driveway to the cabin itself is poorly signposted. Look for a Private property sign off the road. Driveway is very bumpy but passable in 4wd.

There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms but one is downstairs. Beds were comfortable and bathrooms clean. Unfortunately our closet was so full of junk we were unable to hang clothes in it.

My biggest issues were with the kitchen. No wine glasses, a motley selection of incomplete coffee makers, and I think I must have missed the fact on the description that there is no dishwasher.

In summary I would say it would be a gorgeous spot in the summer when the longer days allow evening returns to the cabin. In November the long drive back seriously impacted our time in the parks. You would not want to do either drive in the dark.

Bring all your food, matches, firelighters (there is plenty of well seasoned wood but nothing to light the stove with) and go not plan on using the grill which was caked with dirt.

Owner's Response: Hilary, thank you for taking the time to review the cabin. I write this response so that other/future guests may read the other side of the ledger on your review. The first night you arrived there I received an email via VRBO from you that is copied and pasted below. John, no wine glasses, no usable coffee maker, outside lights do not work, and that's just the beginning. Unless you want a really damning review on VRBO please get Farland to deal with these issues ASAP As you will recall I immediately called you and spoke with your husband in order to address the email concerns. You are the first persons in the many years we have rented out the cabin to mention there are no wine glasses. You are correct, however you failed to mention that if that was important to you, I would gladly reimburse you for any you bought. Next the lights didn't will recall I had your husband check the circuit breakers and sure enough one of them had tripped. You switched it back to on and the lights worked. Next you complained that the carafe to the coffee maker didn't fit. I was unaware of that as previous guests may have broken the correct one and tried fitting a replacement to no effect. If you recall I mentioned that there was a second coffee maker in the cabin, a French coffee press and you said you were fine with that. You further fail to mention in your review that I offered to reimburse you for a coffee maker of your choosing as you mentioned you were going into town each day. These were the only three items you mentioned and in my mind they were all handled on that phone call. You indicated there were no matches or lighters available. I came up to the cabin the day after you left and found 6 large butane BBQ style lighters and two full boxes of wooden matches in the drawer just to the left of the stove. Then of my own volition I offered your husband a partial refund of which he said he was not expecting but would get back to me after talking to the group. He accepted my good will gesture and I sent you a check...yet no mention of that. Finally, nowhere in the information does it infer we have a dishwasher and I am very upfront with all my potential guests (including you) regarding distances and road conditions prior to booking. I feel your review is more a reflection on you than the cabin.

What a special place!

This cabin was everything we had in mind for a special family get-away - cosy yet spacious, clean, secluded, and scenic beyond belief. (Don't underestimate the drive though!)

Owner's Response: Thank you Marianne, we appreciate the time and effort put forth in a review. While the road up and the lane in are only 15 miles from the center of town, it requires 40-45 minutes. We sometimes wish it were otherwise but then realize that part of the charm and experience of the cabin is its location away from the hub-bub. We hope to see you again. Thank you.

Secluded, Relaxing & Scenic!

  • 5 of 5

I rented this property to serve as a "base camp" during a man-trip to Moab and the surrounding national parks. We could not have been happier with the location and seclusion of this cabin! It was exactly what we had hoped it would be, A quiet, scenic getaway. The cabin is about a 45 minute drive from Moab but, it is perhaps one of the most scenic drives you could ask for! We enjoyed every trip to and from the cabin. I will suggest that you rent a Jeep or other four wheel drive vehicle for your trip. Sand Flats road is actually in very good shape for where this road is but, if you travel up to the cabin through Castle Valley, you will be needing a 4WD vehicle. This road is not for the non-adventurous. it is very scenic but, a bit rough in sections.

The cabin itself was great. Comfy furniture and beds, an amazing wrap-around deck and nice size bedrooms. Very cozy and welcoming. really enjoyed watching amazing sunsets and some of the clearest night skies you will ever see. Just breathtaking. We routinely had free-range cows all over the property. They were very friendly and entertaining. Be prepared to be out of breath a lot. The high elevations takes some getting used to if you live at low elevation. We were all in pretty good shape and the elevation always let us know who was boss.

My ONLY complaint, more of a caution than a complaint, is that pretty much all of the windows suck. They will fall down when you open them, some have no screens and some the screens fell out. So, if you open any of the windows just be careful. This in no way affected our comfort or took anything away from our stay. There was one cabinet door in the kitchen that was also on the verge of falling off.

So, if you are looking for some adventure, some seclusion and grand views, look no further! John, the owner, was more than accommodating and was happy to answer any questions that we had in a timely manner. He also suggested some great area restaurants. I WILL stay at this cabin again, and I will be counting the days. I truly hated to leave...

Owner's Response: Gary, thank you for your review. Awesome that you took the time to write it. As far as the windows go, you are correct, we have replaced two and will, as resources permit, continue replacing the rest of them. We will also get some screens as the current ones are too old and undependable. Didn't know about the cabinet door...will have it looked at. When we read reviews such as yours we feel like our efforts are worthwhile. We recognize there is always room for improvement and we do so when able to. We look forward to your next visit.

Perfect Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Moab so we didn't know what to expect. Driving up the Mountain to the Cabin was very exciting. It took longer than expected due me photographing the scenic views!!! (Not complaining) the cabin was perfect for the 4 of us (2 couples). It was fun picking out our rooms when we arrived. We like to watch the sunrise so we picked the room on the left, our friends like to watch the sunset so they picked the room to the right! We loved the wrap around porch with all of the seating, the ability to grill in the evenings, the quietness and stargazing. The road to the cabin is a little rocky but it adds to the adventure. The drive to and from the cabin is aprxo. an hour so we had to plan our time to our excursions effectively. If you live the mountains and the great outdoors, I would recommend the Moab Cabin!

Wonderful stay, nice and cool!

  • 5 of 5

We come to Moab every year and always expect it to be broiling hot - it was wonderful to retreat each evening to a beautiful cabin up in the mountains, sometimes even 15 degrees cooler than in town! Amazing sunsets, cool breezes, and a big wrap-around porch made this year extra special for us. Yes, the drive is rocky, but if you've spent any time driving through these mountains you'll be just fine. Make sure you have four wheel drive, and in the event of heavy rains, take the driveway very slowly. John was very responsive to any questions I had. We plan to return soon!

Owner's Response: Liz, thank you for coming and enjoying the cabin. We appreciate you taking the time to write a kind review. The truth is we know the cabin is not perfect but we consistently seek improvements as we can afford them. Over the past few years we have done quite a bit and it is really appreciated that you recognize them in your review. We will continue to do our best and hope that people like you and your family come to enjoy it. Once again, thank you. Sincerely John
